  • It was pretty obvious Rudd mugged Allison in that corner, especially considering how wide he got afterwords, even if he was avoiding Allisons car afterwords. Hell, the Earnhardt-Labonte deal in Bristol in 99 was nothing more than a hard racing deal with a nudge gone bad.

  • i bet if Gordon or Jimmie or dale Jr try that or any of the notable drivers do that now they wouldn't get the same punishment that rudd got, they just probably wanted to see Allison win at the road course.

  • Man what a finish. Ricky Rudd totally went left into him. But man, Tommy Kendall did a great job out there!

  • Never was a fan of Ricky Rudd, but Rudd was truly robbed of this one.

  • Ironic how he drove for the team after Ernie Irvan

  • I'll tell you what though, Martin was making an extremely difficult pass on the outside of the 42, and he just plain got taken out. I wish ol' Mark was still this good at the road courses.

  • @collegekid122 He's actually a pretty damn good sports car racer that was brought in to run a few Cup races in the '90s.

  • With the finish of this past week's IndyCar race at Edmonton, all I could think of was THIS race. Those are two of the worst calls I can remember seeing in racing.

Also, this race was a few weeks before Tommy Kendall broke both legs in a bad crash at Watkins Glen...one of the wrecks that led to them adding the "inner loop" on the back straightaway.

  • @BSNFabricating i think mcduffie's crash

  • @gobackto82

It was a combination of both, I think. Kendall had his crash in the IMSA Camel Continental at the end of June, when some of the sports cars were hitting 210 + on the back straightaway. JD McDuffie had his in the Winston Cup race in August (I know it's on youtube, but I won't watch it). I was at both races, and if I remember right, somebody had a hard crash in turn five in the IROC race on the Cup weekend. So it all added up. The McDuffie crash more or less confirmed it.

  • @gobackto82 oh yeah , i forgot about that!

  • talk about the biggest screw job ive ever seen in racing. well done nascar. we all know at the time they were sucking allison off

  • That should be my penalty for Carl Edwards a 5 second penalty and then Reed Sorenson would win. Have any opinions?

  • Comment removed

  • Rudd got robbed, NASCAR was giving Allison special treatment

  • That is just hard racing, nothing more.

And I wouldnt bust on Kendall too much, he is a hell of a road racer, one of the best in his time.

  • Had Dave Marcis not been in the way... Davey would have won uncontroversially...

  • Rudd got fucked by Nascar. Nascar only screwed Rudd over cause he wrecked Allison. If Rudd would of spun somebody like Ken Schrader or Micheal Waltrip , Nascar would of gave Rudd the win. Now I'm a Earnhardt fan, but what is the difference between this race and The goody's 500 in 1999? If Jimmie johnson would of wreck Denny Hamlin at martinsville, johnson wouldn't of got in trouble. But if it was reverse, Hamlin would of got in trouble. I'm A Eanhardy SR and Jr fan but Rudd got screwed.

  • The difference is that Terry Labonte didn't finish second in the '99 Bristol race. If NASCAR had given him a several second penalty Jimmy Spencer would have won the race, which would have been an awkward scenario. If Labonte was second rather than eighth, they might have stripped Earnhardt of the win. Having said that, I don't believe Rudd should have been penalized here, because there are WAY too many instances of NASCAR not penalizing people for contact far more incidental than that.

  • Ah, the first NASCAR race I ever watched.

Mark Martin was screwed by Kendall. I felt so bad for Mark, I became his fan.

  • They eventually cretided Rudd 2nd in the final order, 1 second back, because Rudd was 4 seconds in front of Davey, but Rudd got a 5 second penalty, hence the 1 second margin of victory for Davey Allison.

  • Davey Allison won that race-RICKY RUDD drove dirty and got busted-that's all there is to it.

  • he got 2nd place, they just penalized him a second

  • hey man do you have any videos of ricky rudds famous foot work on the road courses?

  • If anyone got screwed out of win it was Tommy Kendall.

  • How many different names has the Sears Point race had?

  • only the 2 i think

  • It's had at least 3 different names, maybe 4. Only Infineon Raceway and Sears Point Raceway have been used since the Cup cars have raced there. At one point, it was called something along the lines of Golden State International Raceway.

  • @battalionfan888 Save Mart has been the main sponsor since 1992, although others (Dodge, Toyota...) have also been part of the race name.

  • @chrisuncleahmad

Only 2, Sears Point, and Infineon.

  • @chrisuncleahmad 3, Sears Point, Sonoma, and Infineon.

  • Davey in 1991 was alot like Dale Earnhardt in the later years in terms of popularity.Looking at the replay, you can argue both sides. If Ricky snickered on the radio or something and they heard it, I could see them giving him the black flag.

Funny thing now seeing this, history repeated itself when they gave Harvick the win over Robby Gordon in the Montreal race last year.

  • I've always wondered how this race would have ended if Kendall and Martin dueled to the finish instead of colliding. Kendall had the best equipment you may ever see a ringer in, driving Kyle Petty's car as he recovered from an injury at Talladega, and was, IMO, the best road racer of the 90s. However, Martin was obviously more familiar with the Cup cars and was no slacker on the roadies in his own right, as he proved with his threepeat at Watkins Glen in later years.

  • znscr, I wouldn't say that necessarily. Boris Said usually gets his equipment from Jack Roush, and we know Roush isn't no field filler.

Ron Fellows also had some good equipment whenever he was running for DEI (before its fall) or RCR on road courses.

  • NASCAR has always been so full of crap...! There is no way you can take a win away from Ricky Rudd, due to incidental contact. It seems to me, CERTAIN drivers got away with a whole lot worse over the years and NASCAR always seemed to turn a blind eye.....

  • That was one of the craziest finishes ever at Sears Point. Maybe in Nascar history.

  • Tommy Kendall was an SCCA Road Racing Champion.

  • I remember watching this, but I don't think Ricky Rudd really intended to spin Davey out for the win. He is not the type of person who would do such a thing like that. Ricky really won this race had it not been for that black flag call.

  • he is a kick ass road course racer

  • Shitty call but I love Bob Jenkins call at the finish.

  • Inconsistent call. Rudd didnt get the win, yet Earnhardt did when he spun Labonte at Bristol in 1999 and Vickers got the 2006 Talladega win by spinning Johnson.

  • Dumbest call in Nascar history, if Nascar was popular like it was today they would not have gotten away with that

  • Like Waddell said, this wasn't the first time anyone had ever spun out the leader on the last lap. If it was, this might be excusable, but not in this case. NASCAR goofed up.

  • and you thought nascar makes bad calls now... this tops them all.

  • Looking at that, Ricky Rudd did get screwed. That was a racing accident, plain and simple. If Ricky Rudd was stripped of the win here, then what about Earnhardt in 1999 at Bristol?

  • Well Dale was "rattling Terry's bird cage, not take him out" incase if you don't know.

  • Believe me, I know that. I'm just saying, the similarity between those two that intentional or not, they were racing accidents.

  • OK, that was kinda dumb that they didn't show Rudd getting the black flag.

  • I love the old configuration of Sears Point. Back when it was called Sears Point.
