  • @imstillworkin - "After doing this taste test, I believe that I will can some more hamburger!" *Giggles!* Wow, you are straight-forward and to the point! I like that about your reviews. You don't mess around ... anyway ... TVP - yes, some brands of it can taste like dog food, but I have a can of it from Shelf Reliance/Thrive Foods.

  • @MyFreedomChannel I recently bought some unflavored TVP to see if I could use it to stretch meats or improve canned hamburger. I tried mixing it with ground sausage and it dilutes the taste too much. It also dilutes the taste of canned hamburger and doesn't improve the texture. I found canned hamburger is much better if you drain it and brown it well in a frying pan before using. It firms up the texture and makes it taste better than just heating it up from the jar.

  • @imstillworkin I hope you know I wasn't poking fun at your review of the FD ground beef & the tvp; it was what you said and how it sounded in your voice at the same time that you panned your video camera over to the pot of boiling beef on the stove - then in a split second, your video cuts off. Basically, what you said was, "Okay, I tasted FD ground beef & tvp; I don't like it; I'm sticking to canning my own hamburger!" Short and to the point! Good for you! :)

  • @MyFreedomChannel LOL, don't worry, I know what you were saying. I was actually disappointed that I didn't prefer the freeze dried or TVP because it would be so much easier and they have a longer shelf life.

  • @imstillworkin I know how you feel. At the moment, I don't have the equipment to grind & can my own ground beef (or chicken), so I have to rely on the FD ground beef when I don't have the fresh stocked in my freezer. I don't mind using the TVP as an extender in a meatloaf or sauce. My husband eats it w/o complaint. The Taco TVP that we use tastes just like the the stuff that you get in tacos from Jack-in-the-box. My husband loves that stuff .. haha!

  • how long did you age that canned ground beef before tasting it again?

  • @earlene0925 I can't remember exactly but I think it was about 9 months.

  • Thank you for posting this video with your review. I am going to try to can beef, chicken, soups, stews, and butter. I have never canned before, but I am looking forward to learning.

  • @Dustycajungurl Thank goodness most of mine is ham, I was planning on putting it in beans.

  • You got a dehydrator? Hamburger rocks, that's dehydrated ground beef. Taste's ok, texture's a bit softer than fresh. Can keep quite a lot vacsealed in a jar, but I can only do about 4lbs at a go in my dehydrator.

  • Forgot to add your saying about "I never had dog food, but this is what I'd imagine it would taste like"....Lord, have mercy, I about died laughing! And the poster saying she might save her TVP for her mother-in-law...Funny!!! Come to think of it, there is a few people I could think of graciously offering it to... :)

  • what is TVP? the letters?

  • @2groomers Textured Vegetable Protein. It's basically what's left of soy beans after they sqeeze all the vegetable oil out of them.

  • Thanks for this! I was thinking of adding some freeze dried ground beef to my storage, but I think I will can my own now. Very helpful information!

  • Oh..Man I have a bunch of that TVP put up in my long term stuff, I was going to throw it in when I make beans... I never tried it, just stored it away... to late now...dog food for dinner in 2021.

  • lol - loved this video!! I won a can of TVP and it's on my shelf WAY in the back. Love the idea about giving it to beggars.....my mother-in-law is vegan...maybe I should give it to her! lol

  • Thanks you so much for this video. I have a good bit of home canned ground beef on my self. I like it, becuase I know how it was prepared and what's in it. I do have some of the exact freezed dried ground beef like you showed, but I have not used it. It's so expensive, that I'm saving it for when I need it. I'm glad you showed it, and that you tired it. Don't store TVP, it just looks, smells and taste gross to me. Would I eat it if I had to? You bet.

  • LOL...TVP= dogfood....Anything is going to be different than fresh....I put the canned hamburg in spaghetti sauce and my family liked it. Prepared household did a great canning video for it

  • Loved your assessments. I have the sausage and pepperoni tvp for pizza and with all the other ingredients it doesn't taste bad. My teenagers still don't know that's what I use on the pizza they love. I absolutly hate I repeat hate the chicken TVP!

  • @jennyor The ham TVP is awful too. The smell is horrible and extremely strong, just opening the can will stink up your entire house. If you read the reviews on the ham TVP, a man actually advises opening it outside to let it air out. He ain't kidding. I might give the sausage and pepperoni a try.

  • I actually have some of the TVP, only I bought plain TVP. I use it with regular ground beef and my kids don't know the difference. I have used it in spaghetti and chili with good results. I think the trick is to use the plain stuff, it does not have a smell at all. It tastes like what you flavor it with. I figure it can't hurt to have some in my stores. Its cheap and I can sneak it in here and there. Sorry you didn't care for it. Good comparison for those who don't know. Noreen

  • @atticus9799 The biggest problem with it is whatever they flavored it with. You'd think they would have used something like beef boullion. I'm not kidding when I say it smells and tastes like dog food. Plain TVP probably would be better.

  • A vegetarian for some yrs. now, I Dr. up the vege. protein with onion, garlic etc.

  • Thanks for the info. Last year, my wife and I bought 50 lbs of ground chuck for $1.50/lb at the local grocery store to dehydrate. We pan fried it salted several pounds at a time and rinsed well with hot water to eliminate any residual fat. We then spread it on the excalibur and dried it. We have since been using it to add beef to soups and it's great. We reconstitute it in beef broth and it's better than I expected for dehydrated beef. Of course, you can't form patties, but it's great for chili.

  • Dog food....ya that's a good description of TVP! LOL! That stuff is just vial! Bleh!

Thanks a lot for the review, it was very helpful.:)

  • The best way to learn how to use TVP is in vegetarian cookbooks. When it is done right and I stress, done right, it is not bad. It can actually be fairly good. I think it is one of those things that takes practice. I've never had meat flavored TVP, only the plain. Maybe that is part of the problem too. Another good video.

  • This is a great comparison. Thank you for spending the money so the rest of us dont have to.

  • lol.. you are too funny! I hope I never have to eat TVP :)

  • @roxiexd If anybody comes begging, I'll give them some TVP. I bet they won't ask me for anything else!

  • TVP scares me
