  • my friend was at that conference!!!!!!!

  • The beginning of chapter 6 contained no awkward moment. I was disappointed at this.

  • I've just reread TFiOS and now I'm immensely disappointed that I won't be able to hear John speaking, as Hazel, about becoming a women.

  • I wish you sold more than just the 3,000 copies of the audio book! I knew it was gonna sell out, but I was not sure how fast. :(

  • I just started reading Looking For Alaska! lol

  • Today I took my SAT and the essay was on why censorship is bad for the country. So I wrote my essay on how the 2008 John Green couldn't use the poem in Looking For Alaska and how censorship hurts the middle class and helps the rich. I knew spending all last night watching these videos would pay off. Thank you John!

  • @HeightsChick21

You know you're not supposed to disclose the information about your SAT until a significant time after the essay? Namely: more than a day.

Now it's been posted all over the internet. Congrats.

  • "You can trust me, I'm a man-bra."

  • You have no idea how much I respect you and your brother

  • i love how americans say zebra.

  • "And you can trust me, I'm a man bra-" BEST QUOTE EVER!

    It changed my life

  • Hey! It's me again, your fellow YouTuber, the top comment guy. I'm currently listening to the audiobook of The Fault in Our Stars, and I would just like to let you know that you have successfully extracted several tears from my face. And for that, I thank you. Nerdfighters, can you thumbs up so he sees this? :) Thanks. DFTBA

  • I have one thing to say:

    page 207 line 3

    AWKWARD

  • As a poor high school kid, I can't read all of TFiOS, but I've watched you read chapter one and two several times, and I absolutely love it. Is it bad that I'm spending my time watching these videos rather and work on my own book? T.T

  • SOPA is SOPA-king stupid.

Yeah, no one ever made that joke before.

  • @MaddhatterChannel Maybe because it's terrible.

  • @mastershakeaq Terrible? Or the best joke ever?

  • hanks goaty

  • The most awkward thing I've experienced with "Looking for Alaska" was bringing it to school where my friend said "I've always wanted to read that!" I got super happy and said "Nerdfighters unite!" She then asked me what a nerdfighter was. I was so disappointed.

  • Hi john, please read my awesome idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(and others to thumbs up so john will see)

I have an idea for hanks birthday. A apples to apples nerdfighter edition!!!!!!

ask people to come up with a design for a card, then compile the designs and turn alot of the good ones into cards for the game. cards could be like famous nerdfighters and enimies of nerdfighters (so you can have some bad catagories).

Please please please take this into conseteration and excuse my spelling Dan

  • "Here's a sample: 'Chapter Six'"

    BOOK RUINED T_T

  • THERE ARE AT LEAST SIX CHAPTERS IN TFIOS. SPOIERS!

  • YOU WERE IN OUR PANERA AND BRILLIANCE AUDIO AND DIDN'T TELL US! I AM SAD AND DISAPPOINTED. PLEASE COME AGAIN!

  • Zeman,

  • YOU WROTE LOOKING FOR ALASKA? THAT IS ON MY BOOKSHELF RIGHT NOW. WHAT?

  • @muffinman3000 I had to think for a while before I relized that they don't really say their full names that often.

  • @muffinman3000 How could you not know that it is on the cover.

  • @muffinman3000 YES. HE WROTE "LOOKING FOR ALASKA"!!

  • @muffinman3000 Haha, that's exactly how I reacted when I realized that he wrote Paper Towns :)

  • I am wearing the same headphones as youu.

  • I need this even though I've already preordered the book. D:

  • I love how fast you speak

  • John, i know this is kind of late but my english teacher was at the english teachers convention and saw you there. She actually went up to you and told that she has a student that loves you. Well that would be me. Thank you so much for the signature and preview of The Fault in Our Stars!! The book is anazing!

  • YES! i am glad your doing audio books when you said you wouldn't, thank you John! your voice is just so calming :)

  • @puertorrriquena Amsterdam is amazing! I'm so glad I chose to study here but sad I'm returning home soon

  • AHHHH MY TEACHER WAS AT THAT CONFERENCE!! And he got me the two chapter copy of TFiOS. :) I hope to be going to this conference every year starting next year. :)

  • That answers so many of my questions on copyrighting. Thank you so much John Green :)

Though I'm not so sure the same rules apply for the new program on YouTube called AdSense.

it says in all the agreement forms that you maybe not have any media that is not yours period, even if its for 20 seconds. Sadface. Or is I recall correctly it can be under 20 seconds but not over, even if its in the background of your video; like you and your friends watching tv.

  • I've been surprised by the start of many videos. This one however out did itself.

  • Monogram!

  • So I've been staring at that mirror. Awesome.

  • Hey, John. I think that the nerdfighters should have a hair puff competition. I have a pretty huge puff, just saying.

  • Comment removed

  • I'm extremely distracted by that mirror in the back.

  • As im watching this I'm defacing my room with push pins and paper...

  • I just thought I'd come here and let you know that my school's library bought a copy of Will Grayson, Will Grayson. (:

  • My English teacher gave me an A+ for my book report on Looking for Alaska :)

  • 1:24

  • This arguably the most perfectly transcribed video i have ever seen on youtube.

For stupid people I'm talking about the closed captions button at the bottom of your screen

  • "I'm a man, I'm a zebra, I'm a MAN BRA!" :D that should be on a t-shirt. Really. :)

  • I can bear the John-stare in almost all contexts except for when he's reciting poetry. I don't know. I just can't look at his face when he's intoning poetry.

  • "And you can trust me; I'm a man bra!"

Only YOU could say that and not make it sound creepy =D

  • My English teacher went there.

  • When I first read the description, I thought TFiOS said FiOS.

  • If Kate sounds so much like Hazel, how did you know what you wanted Hazel to sound like when you created the character?

  • John i was searching through fanfiction . net as i was looking for inspiration because i write fanfiction and i happened to notice that your books are all categories for fanfiction stories, i was wondering if you were aware of this?

  • So I'm curious, John: can you explain in 500 words or less how they made it possible for you to publish two audiobooks? I am greatly curious about legal contracts that satisfy everyone; they are an oddity in today's world IMO.

  • As an IB Student, copyright means plagiarism... i hate plagiarism!

  • It's been awhile since I've kept up with youtube. Only because it is quite a bit of work. But I did miss these videos and your still my favorite Author :D

  • just*

  • i think you wist found a use for the end world suck fund!

  • Your bedroom basically is fantastic.

  • Am I the only one who thought someone, maybe Hank, was going to come bursting through the door at 1:19?

  • @theflyingkestrel I didn't first time around, but on review I can see how you thought so.

  • whats sopa?

  • Watching this video I got extremely excited by the shot out side the Hilton Chicago because all I could think was LEAKY CON 2012!!

  • He is a Zeman... Semen? Well, that's not better at all!

  • "I'm a man-bra" never gets old.

  • Which restaurant did you go to where the hostess was a Nerdfighter??? I live in Chicago, I want to meet her :)

  • Crazy is my favorite vegetable.

  • Shiny door handles

  • Oh hey! My communications teacher was talking about that conference earlier today.. And she started to name off authors she had met.. But she didn't say John Green.. and it made me sad. :c

  • CANT. STOP. STARING. AT. MIRROR.

  • "You can trust me, I'm a man-bra."

  • @xelentoliver i think this should be on a t-shirt

  • @PrettyGreenGoat Publishing is something that John should make a video about but when an author publishes a work they are (usually) selling one or more of their intellectual property rights to a publisher in exchange for an advance payment and an agreed royalty fee based on sales. If John includes a Millay poem he pays a fee to the company that owns her publishing rights (HarperCollins maybe?) which in turn pays a royalty to her estate as designed in her will or as determined by the courts.

  • Comment removed

  • I love manbras... :)

  • JOHN!!! I just had the most amazing idea! Your video reminded me of the current debate topic which is 'Resolved: In the United States, current income disparities threaten democratic ideals' and I think that you and Hank should debate that! Also just do live debates w/ Hank in general.

  • Battling the oppression of strollers. (:

  • @creativgal13 Professionally? No. But I do have several lawyer friends, and they are all very lovely people.

  • I think it all depends on what is being used that is under copyright and how many times it is used, though I do agree that it is pretty ridiculous to charge a lot for use of a couple of lines of a poem.

  • WOOOOOT!!!! sorry...was excited when I saw that my husband has that same Polo shirt!! hheheheee!

  • is the main character/narrator of the fault in our stars a girl?

  • I think Disney manages to demonstrate everything that is wrong with copyright law. Get rid of the spaces and find #3 on this page: filmschoolrejects (the dot-com thing) slash features/6-things-the-film-industry-doesnt-want-you-to-know-about.php/all/1

Not really SFW. Lots of cursing.

  • while looking for this video this morning, I accidentally typed in "clogbrothers". what can I say? living in Amsterdam for a semester will do that to you.

  • @grassyassmariana I feel like there should be a segment called "clogbrothers" in which John and Hank wear wooden shoes while they vlog.

  • @grassyassmariana lol call it a typo, those 2 letters are right next to each other. How was Amsterdam? I wanted to study abroad but never really got a chance

  • @grassyassmariana What did you find? =O

  • I have a question -

If I were to read the entirety of Looking For Alaska or The Great Gastby in videos, say a chapter per video, would I be infringing copyright?

  • @TheLadyWednesday Well, Alex Day did something similar when he read Twilight, but he commented on the work (extensively) which as Hank was saying in his video changes things rather a lot.

  • "so one of my big issues with copyright law is that currently-" and then the video stopped loading and my fiancee and I laughed hard at the irony :D

  • I must know, what is the name of that poem?

  • What I find disturbing is that we are protecting the "rights" of Edna St. Vincent Millay 62 years after she died. If the aim of copyright law is to guarantee that content creators can fairly profit from their work, you really have to ask yourself if that is what is happening here.

  • @mindbenderrx I agree. Also, I am a bit confused as to what Edna St. Vincent Millay's "estate" consists of? Where exactly would that $500 go?

  • @mindbenderrx .... And how is it that we can protect the rights of someone who has been deceased for 62 years and yet we can't protect the rights of the children working in factories, the women in abusive relationships, and the men being forced to fight for corrupt causes?

  • @madisonhm94 so... you're comparing copyright law... to whatever point you're trying to make.

  • Dont forget Protect IP Act... that scares the crap out of me too... This is all just going down hill, but at least it seems most of those who have joined in on protesting the bill have affected SOPA

  • Audiobooks are kinda irritating to me because it encourages the use of online domination. I think the internet is awesome- but there is really nothing that beats holding that fresh book in your hands. Although; I do have a kindle but still :P

  • Yay! Audiobooks! I love audiobooks! :)

  • I like how we're supposed to continue the conversation in the comments, and the top two comments are about his audio book and the English Teacher conference. LOL

  • I get this funny feeling in my belly that says that perhaps you guys oversea should try and vote some of your smart people into the senate and presidential office, instead of the naysayers and fat cats you have now.

  • @creativgal13 Actually I quite agree with you. Which is why I meant that their idea of this being a more peaceful way of removing protestors from the street was obviously not functional. I was actually trying to direct more people to see that YouTube video for themselves so they could witness the horror of what happened. Although I have no idea how you would have gotten it from my post I apologize if I appeared offensive.

  • If someone read a book and posted them reading it online, wouldn't that be illegal?

  • Imma MAN-BRA

    Oh wait thats something else...

    xD

  • I'm in the middle of writing a grad school paper on copyright law and how it relates to librarianship in an increasingly digital world and I came on youtube to waste some time as writer's block seized my brain..this was the first video I clicked in my subs box and I feel that it is screaming at me to get back to work on the paper due its subject matter lol.

  • You're not old, Hank.

  • @Niekpas1 that's John, not Hank :P

  • @nosense82

Haha, how the hell did I miss that? Sorry... brain fart!

  • i want your audiobook but i am poor :(

  • It's weird isn't it, we spend most of our childhood battling our parents about being fed and being pushed around in buggies and strollers. Then we spend the rest of our lives wishing we'd just enjoyed that time. I'd love to take the time to sit in a man buggy and be pushed around by a responsible adult!

  • Man Bra? Good sir, you're a BRO

  • "I'm a MAN, I'm a ZEBRA,....I'm a MAN BRA....No, wait that is something else"

  • @Kjmonkey95 I'm so glad you outlined that for us, I do not have ears.

  • Hey Jon, can you reply to me? I am a writer and avid English major and I would love some lovin' ;)

  • Right, but then how does Edna St. Vincent get paid? Does your opinion change if you are paying her instead of her estate? The problem with wanting these things to be accessible to all is that then the people who make them aren't able to support themselves.

I'm not saying that I agree with SOPA, but because money is the only way we have to repay authors for the time and energy they spend on their work (at least that keeps them fed) I'm not sure that taking that cost away is the solution.

  • @jaxofspades87 I think the problem here isn't that Edna St. Vincent Millay wouldn't be the one actually being paid. I think the biggest problem is actually that she's dead and has been dead for over sixty years. I don't think money is a big deal once your dead.

However I do agree that people should be paid for what they create. I'm more just pointing out that it's difficult to directly pay dead people, which is why it's usually then just paid to the estate of said dead person.

  • @oliverhazardous Ok. Let's say you started your own company or bought stock, wouldn't you want your family to continue receiving that money after you died? Or if you inherited a house would you rent it out to send your kid to college rather than let it sit unused? How do you distinguish creative works from other sources of income?

I agree that estate holders can be unreasonable, but I still think the issue is a complex one, and it does not become less difficult if the person is dead.

  • @jaxofspades87 I think you missed my point. Edna St. Vincent Millay's estate, the people who she willed all her "stuff" too (*cough*cough*family*), are the people who'd receive the money. I never said anything about estate holders being unreasonable, I just agreed that people should receive proper recognition of their creative works. Although, to be perfectly honest, I think people over thinking the situation make the issue a lot more complicated than it really is.

  • I work at Barnes and Noble and one of my coworkers couldn't find the last copy of Looking for Alaska anywhere today. I wanted to make the obvious pun so badly.

I knew exactly where it was because I stalk the progress of your books.

  • Also gotta be wary of the PIPA- Protect Intellectual Property Act. which evidently is just SOPA with out the imprisonment parts.

  • can we please please please please please get a "i'm a man-bra" t-shirt?

  • @PancakeToss With Zebra stripes...!!!

  • hazel is a written character. how does she have a voice? i know every character has a way of speaking but do you mean that or that she has the same pitch and treble?

  • I was wondering if you could briefly discuss your experience recording the book. I've always wondered what that's like. What happens if you make an absurd number of mistakes? What do you do if you're not sure how to pronounce a word? ...and etc.

  • Copyright law makes me angry.

  • Comment removed

  • I'm asking my grandmother for fifty dollars for christmas. I will then purchase the box set and preorder the book so that I can read along with my idle

  • I've always seen copyright infringement as when you use something created by someone else, and claim it as entirely your own. If you use someone elses creation, make money from it and don't give some money to the original creator, that counts as infringement, but not until you've made money from it. That would work for '04 John, because he hadn't made money until it was published and subsequently bought.

  • "You can trust me, I'm a manbra" x)

  • @Hexinvir Botanically, yes, they are a vegetative plant organ.

Nutritionally, no, they are a carbohydrate

  • Is it just me or does that room resemble the one Vanessa Hudgens took nudes in..

  • @20WillyS think u may hav observed those photos too many times...

  • Steaming slice of crazy. Yeah blame congress -_-

  • Pah, if you think the Chicago traffic is bad now, wait 'til the first snowfall...

  • I'm about 99.99% sure my English teacher was there..ohmygosh

  • KATE RUDD IS SO CUTE!

  • I would love to purchase the limited edition but recently became unemployed- I am now charity and if there's anyone out there at all that would donate me the audio book done by John I will gladly donate $40 to a charity of their choosing when I have another job. (or just give the money back to them or buy something of similar value) *cute pouty face*

  • I bought your limited edition.

    Don't worry.

I'm buying the official one as well.

I will probably have a lot of copies of your books. If they are different covers, I want all of them.

    I have no idea why.

It's probably because I grew up with Pokemon.

    Gotta collect 'em all, y'know.

  • @ReKrisB is it sad that i know the original 100 rap by heart?

btw nice style i enjoy the syntax of your comment

  • Could you maybe release some samples of the audio (like the first chapter) from both recordings, so we can decide which one we'd rather listen to for the whole book?

  • I don't even understand what problem this bill is trying to address. Is a 13-year-old making a video for an English project really a criminal for adding music to it? No. It's the easiest and most effective free advertisement which companies should be eating up. In turn, stopping this will not make people stop downloading things illegally. This is an age-old issue. I could have bought my tv from a van in an alley. That decision will always have to be made, and the government can't make that choi

  • what camera is that at the beginning?

  • Fuck you! I wanted to hear those excerpts! :D

  • SOPA = bad..... censorship ≠ freedom of speech... I approve of zebra pajamas! ^^

  • Was that Hotel Monaco? I stayed there last year! It was pretty cool.

  • And then i took off my manbra,

  • @suburiboy hahahaha i see what you did there

  • i hate copy rights espily since newer youtube more and more gets copy righted it is horribale just get rid of it it the inter net it soupse to be free and copy right should not matter

  • Such a fine line to draw! In a completely subjective, personal, and on the spot opinion, I think that you should be able to use half of a work before you get to worry about copyright. Cause arguing over copyright of a few lines or a few minutes or seconds of anything just seems petty and vain.
