She's facing a dillema: to do her duty in a job or be a human and save her. Ofcourse, what could she do to a man with a AK47? Nothing, but if I was her, I wouldn't take and share that picture. It's a moral thing.
If I'm not mistaken she mouths the words "Please" and looks pleadingly at the photographer before facing the gunman closing her eyes and resigning herself to her fate. So the photographer was no longer a fly on the wall observer but a person with a duty to intervene.
She should do that. The journalist´s duty is to take that photograph. Correspondents and war photographers are everyday risking their lives to let us know what is really happening there. And, in addition, they suffer great pain during their lives because they watched everything in person. So don´t picture them as monsters: they are truly doing something very important to dennounce those wars. Go watch James Natchwey´s work and docummentary ("War Photographer") and surely you will understand.
@martagcoloma I hope someone wins an award for standing by and taking a picture of your child being killed. It's fine, because they will be doing it for the sake of denouncing wars or violence, or whatever. Only a true monster (and sociopath) can separate from human suffering that is happening directly in front of them and do nothing. And only a bigger monster can justify it.
If it wasn't for these people, with their photos and videos, we would not have a clue of what is happening in these countries! Also, it's not the photographers or the ones taking videos that will save the world...
Unfortunately, these things happen whether we as photographers intervene or not.
Unless you are in that situation you cannot comment on how you would or should react, however the likelyhood of you surviving the encounter if you did try to help would be very slim.
It is not our job to stop the horrors, it is our job to capture the moment and hopefully try to educate through our images in a chance that it may save the next life.
I live in hope that one day my hopes are realised.

I feel sorry for the woman and the dilemma she faced and I hated the soldier....yes , the real guilty but as I notice everyone here is just criticizing the woman not the soldier
If she helped the girl , she was supposed to be dead by now ; so in that instant she couldn't think of doing the right thing because she just felt fear.
But the soldier .......yeah , he could not kill a little girl.
How do you know that the audience knows the story behind the photo?
On the other hand the woman realised that the girl noticed her. The girl stared at her praying for help but the dirty bitch only hesitated for a moment and kept on taking pictures of her murdering. Moreover she obviously put the photo into the press because it was awarded at the contest. So don't tell me now that she has any regrets about what was done!
i dont think dis video was made to show that photographer shud save a life...it was more abt d guilt that eats Kate wen she sees that may b instead of clicking pictures she SHOULD or COULD have saved a life...it isnt her duty bt it is abt being human...
@STRATOVITS: do u have a better version of this video??? pls post it if u do.... thanks.
@mirovingin7 so what could she do? yell at the shouldier? yell at him so then they both die. sometimes you just can't do anything and what you can at least do is let the people know of what is happening out there! besides, she's no fucking hero, she's not a soldier, how can she find the courage to confront this man? I would be shit scared, I would not be able to move my legs, how would I help the little girl?
You could have done something for this girl, but who cares? you are the goddamn photographer of the year!!
who cares about a life!!
who knows,I could get some recognizement!!
yes, photographers and journalists risk their lives doing their jobs, they are not warriors or mother teresa, they work capturing images,BUT when it comes to have the chance to save a life,YOU FORGET ABOUT YOUR PICTURES AND REMEMBER THAT YOU CAN HELP TO SAVE SOMEONE AS YOU COULD BE SAVED TOO.
this is so unfair... photographers and journalists risk their lives just by being there, now you're asking them to intervene and start saving lives??? with what? their cameras??? stupid video... you can't think of a photographer as a soldier or even a normal citizen. he or she is supposed to bea recording tool and try not to get killed himself... besides even this video which wants us to believe that she could have saved the girl, doesn't show any guarantee that she could have done it...
first of all you are a human being, not a walking camera. Being a cameraman here is a pure business thing: you risk your life for a good salary and you won't be awarded more for trying to save life of an unknown girl.

Don't forget this happened in one hundred of a second. All the panning back and forth is not real. The video is not real either.

People clap at the image because:
They dont know what was done in order to take it
What if the photographer simply found her around?
...People, think logically please

Very SAD story... it sheds light on the real reality of war-torn countries. I "like" it but it broke my heart.

You know, I'd throw the camera to the man's face, so maybe the girl could have a chance to run away. Or anything.
I'd just made a big noise, and ran. Anything, but not just stand there and take photos.
