The movie was based on a novel written in the 1800s by Mirza Hadi Ruswa and many will consider it the first urdu novel. The Pakistani version was made in 1972 and starred Rani and Shahid, the Indian version was made in 1981 starring Rekha and Amitabh Bachchan. Nor Pakistan copied India nor India copied Pakistan both made illustrations of the book in their own ways. Both movies are equally good based on the time they were made.
@DivyaPreity4ever aaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrgggggggghhhhhhhhh apoligies sorry i completely mixed umrao jaan with salaam e ishq from muqaddar ka sikandar, sorry either way the statement above is still valid minus the amitabh bachchan part lol sorry.

@Zindagikasafer786.....Hindustani? Do you know how many Lucknavi families there are in Pakistan? Lucknow, where the majority was muslim, and Urdu was the language. Our culture [Indian/Pakistani is related, what culture you think belongs only to India [out of spite], also belongs to Pakistan, because ,lets face it, we were 1 country, and most of our culture is the same.
After watching all three versions of Umrao, my candid opinion is that the '86 version portrays real Lucknow & interprets Ruswa's parody on the society of that day. Every bit of this version is of supreme. Lucknow of that day was the epitome of Indo Mughal cultural achievement. It is difficult for others to understand and appreciate the beauty, serenity and polity of that era unless one has personal experience of it through family. Kamal has portrayed that in the film very realistically.
Amitabh not in the 1981 movie.
