In the latest update (10/7/09) from the IWS crew, Spirit is still thriving and soaring over Santa Cruz Island. His big sister, Cruz (the first bald eaglet to hatch on the Channel Islands in over 50 years without human help) is flying between Santa Rosa & Santa Cruz. She is now approaching breeding age, so hopefully, she will find a mate and settle down soon.
WOW !!! Just took a look at the photos on the URLink provided up above.
The Eagle Cam does 'not' do their size justice whatsoever. Seven weeks and they're huge! Yup, guess they would eat a lot of fish and anything else that was brought in.
Do appreciate this followup; guess they weren't returned to their parents.
By the time they were healed, their parents had moved on for the year, so they were both placed in a hacking tower on the island....at different times since Spirit's injuries healed sooner than Skye's. Both fledged successfully. Spirit is still flying freely about the island and socializing with other young eagles. Skye's body was found about a month after he fledged floating in a giant kelp bed....a sad end to a courageous eagle.
Thank you. We can't blame the parents. Dad (K-10) was seen by the Rescue 911 crew members chasing the intruder. When Mom (K-26)came back with a prey a bit later, damaged was already done.
Thank you to the rescue team for work well done, to the vet, rehab centre and all concerned in salvaging those two dear eaglets, All the best of luck for the rest of their lives.
The adult my also be attacking them becasue he/she is hungry. It is true that some eagles my eat other eageles to survive. The IWS team must be truly thankful for whoever called in!
We have to be careful not to put human values on these wild creatures. What seems crazy to us, may be normal for them. Eagles are aggresive by natue. They have to be for their survival. With the popularity of nest cams, hopefully we'll be able to answer that question.
Thanks for putting this together. I had just missed it and didn't realize so much time had gone by before the second attack. So thankful that IWS cared enough to intervene and get help for them. Donation is one the way. :)
Well the parents fly off every once in a while but they didnt used to do that but as they got bigger the parents started to lke fly off then come back..soo yah
Just want to thank you for the video. I know it must have taken some time, but I really am thankful, I missed the whole thing and when I tuned in this AM., and there were no chicks, I was freaking out. Then I come across the posts. And all I can say is BRAVO! To everyone. Thanks again for your vid. Now I understand what happened.
Holy...this was an amazing video to be seen. I know it was tragic for Skye and Spirit but so interesting from a learning perspective. I would love to know what Dr. S thinks after he analyzes this video and I bet this is on for the Eagle journals. Way to go IWS forum members and the IWS team for getting there so fast to save these guys from an even more terrible ending.
Umbelievable in deed! Today I saw in Helsinki Great Crested Grebes nest, Eurasian Coots nest and Common Goldeneyes nest also. I love birds. Also I saw two Marsh Sandpiper, but I have never seen thisones! :) thanks from this
The IWS crew that rescued he eaglets has video and pictures that they are going to share with us on our discussion forum, but they haven't had time yet. We're all waiting on pins & needles to see them.
I usually have Channel Islands Live webcam on so I could see if I could see the babies fly for the first time. I never foresaw an intruder eagle! How sad it was when I got back the compter to find an empty nest. Then first thing this AM to see a parent bird alone. Thank G-d people are there assisting nature instead of messing it up.
This was just so unbelievable to watch live. Even watching this video I still get the chills and I am so grateful that the IWS Team found both Skye and Spirit, although hurt, they are ALIVE.
Thanks Jann for making this video. I know it wouldn't have been an easy one to do.

They were out fishing. It takes a lot of food to feed 2 fast-growing eaglets.

If you go to the Channel Island Discussion forum, you can see pictures of the eaglets being cared for by the vet.

Hard as it is to watch, thank you so much for putting this together. I know as Cumbrian said, it couldn't have been easy.
It gives some resolution hearing them talking at the end, knowing all is not lost.
