Edda Dell' Orso. Oh my what a singer. The leitmotifs that Morricone produced are easily some of the most recognised in film and music history. Morricone is right up there with Bach and Beethoven and Debussy if you ask me...G...
The combination of casting, photography, music, and story-telling make this one of the best. "This is how it is done."
And C. Cardinale was every bit as stunning and magnificent as one could hope. You can see why. Henry Fonda called his work in this film, his favorite role. There's a lot for the actors to do, and not much of it's with words - the script is very short.
sahmaran933. That is one of the many reasons Leone's westerns are so successful. Attention to detail was how his epic westerns let us, for the first time, almost smell the stench of these rough and ruthless characters. So if you feel sick, then the movie has succeeded. Just watch the scene with Claudia and Lionel Stander when they discuss the merits of washing!!
Casting Claudia Cardinale in this epic western was such a masterstroke. Her beauty clashes so effectively with the ugliness of the characters she meets. I dare anyone not to melt when she is seen for the first time alighting from the train. "Jill's America", the Morricone track accompanying this scene, fits her vulnerable character perfectly. Definitely a movie that no director today would even think of remaking!! Deserves to be high up on the list of the best movies ever made!
Damn - let me go to heaven. Let me go to hell. If this woman and this music follows me, you can put me anywhere. I don't care. I'll just be af lucky man!
- - I am getting on in years- and one more or one less trip around the sun seems a matter of small concern. - - Nonetheless, I will do what I must for as long as I can to keep myself fit. - - I resolve to do this for the sake of the off chance that somewhere, - sometime, - there may be a woman like this that needs me for something.
@dansir1958 i was introduced to this film when i was 22 by a man called LOU, he was 60 and diabetic. He was confined to the wheel chair. I was too young to understand what this illness can do to a man. He asked me to watch this film with him. He wanted me to Listen to the part when Cheyenne asked Jill to go out and get water so men can look at her. Lou died few weeks later. He left me with this film to remember him. I miss him and for two months that I kept company with him I made him happy.
@isaysee A beautiful song that befits a beautiful woman... I share your admiration. If only I could turn the clocks back thirty years and hold it there forever, then I would be a happy man. We can only dream. A very good new year to you.
I've seen this movie several times...incredible. And every time I still can't believe you Charles Bronson, at the end you ride away from this woman...... And some people don't believe in God. Tell me, how something like this, could evolve from a monkey. Absolutely stunning.
Caudia Cardinale was and still is even in her 70s a very beautiful woman, I will always remember her and the music from this film, probably the best Western ever.
I hope Claudia Cardinae married and had children. If she didn't, it would be a tremendous waste of an absolutely perfect gene pool. She is perfection in every way - those mezmerizing brown eye -like a doe's eyes; the full sensuous lips, the high cheek bones, the perfect nose, the beautiful, flawless golden brown skin - and of course, THOSE EYES!! Those mezmerizing brown eyes!! Incredible!
@tesi1973 Thanks so much for letting me know about that film. You're right - she is beautiful in that film. A different look of her, to be sure, than we see of Claudia in Once Upon A Time in The West. However, there is something about Claudia in this film that is very unique in comparison to most of her other films. I mentioned how mezmerizing her eyes are - perhaps more so in this film than any other - hard to explain. Its a look of profound sadness, of truly deep emotion. Powerful.
@hrrj9119 Well,I understand very well what you're saying about her eyes...But let me tell you that for me they're unique here (like Claudia) because were filmed by Leone...He was able to do that.He was able to film the soul of his actors.DeNiro in "Once upon a time in America" is the most perfect exemple of Leone's art. You're right when you say that.Claudia wasn't so emotional in the other movies she did. But she's always beautiful....Ciao
@tesi1973 You're right in your description of Leone. Perhaps no director in the last 50 years could evoke the emotions in his actors quite like Sergio Leone. He was the master. So, take a director like Sergio Leone, add an actress with the talent and beauty of a Claudia Cardinale, and the result is one of the classic films of all time. Arguably, the greatest western ever made. Not surprising, you see alot of Sergio Leone's techniques in films directed by Clint Eastwood today.
@tesi1973 Oh, and we cannot forget the masterful musical score of Ennio Morricone. Add those ingredients, and you will produce a masterpiece everytime!
@hrrj9119 You're 100% right.Leone's style is present in many directors today (Tarantino too).I think that movies world misses one like him today. He has many clones but there's only one Sergio.Only Leone could film the scene when Claudia arrives at the farm in that way....Incredible.Sometimes this alchemy happens in movies.I hope to see a thing like this again.Ciao
@tesi1973 I think that might be wishful thinking. A filmaker like Sergio Leone cannot be replaced. As the saying goes.. . "often imitated, never duplicated." I'm afraid that is true even with an actress like Claudia Cardinale. Her talent was unique, as was her beauty. While there are certainly many beautiful actresses today -none possess the type of classic beauty we saw in the actresses of that era -Claudia Cardinale, Sophia Loren, Brigitte Bardot, Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, etc.
@hrrj9119 As Italian I can only be glad to read your words. Here Leone is studied in schools of cinema as
Fellini,DeSica,Rossellini and many great directors from the world. It's incredible how everytime I see Tuco searching the grave with "The Ecstasy of Gold",or Fonda's final duel with Bronson,I feel a storm of emotions in me..Awesome!
He did few films, but he gave a new direction to the world of movies(not only westerns). You're right when you say "cannot be replaced"(also for Claudia).Bye.
@tesi1973 As an Italian, you should be proud. You have much to be proud of - your culture, your music, your cuisine, your breathtakingly beautiful country (Positano is perhaps the most beautiful place on the planet). The Italian influence on cinema was tremendous. From "one of a kind" filmmakers like Leone, to perhaps the world's most beautiful and stunning actresses - Claudia and Sophia. And as I said pereviously, let us not forget the absolute genius that was Ennio Morricone. Unforgettable!
@hrrj9119 I know why you felt in love with Positano..Thanks for all your opinions to my country.Of course isn't a heaven but Italy has many good things to show to the world (except Berlusconi...for me).All south Italy is a beautiful place to visit (North too).Coppola made a very nice documentary about Basilicata. If you don't know it you can find it on youtube. When he can he comes here for our film festivals and also for eating...Ciao
Went to see this film at my local cinema in 1970. I was 18 and the combination of the beautiful Claudia and this haunting musical masterpiece had tears rolling down my cheeks, much to my embarrassment and the amusement of my pals. Worshipped Ennio ever since.
Truly one of the most beautiful women of all time, an actress with poise and grace. Once Upon A Time is the West is one of my all time favorite movies. A truly stellar cast. And the score, one of the finest ever in motion pictures.
Sicilian if I remember correctly. I remember the first time I saw her, it was a Fellini film...even in black and white her eyes and her smile were captivating.
Le regard, la présence, une femme, une actrice rare........merci d'incarner le cinéma sans en faire tout un cinéma...........le secret certainement des vrais stare
Thaks for the post. Awesome film, and Cardinale is awesome in it. Also, one of the few Westerns in which the main character is a woman, for she is truly the main character. I've always wondered if her voice is overdubbed by another actress in the movie. Her English has quite a foreign accent, doesn't it? Pity they didn't use her actual voice and work it into the character, and who was the actress who did the dubbing?
Watching this will help those who miss'understood what Freud meant when he asked - - - - "what does a women want "- - - - - - He simply meant we should make sure what it is, - and see that she has it.
Shot of scotch = 1 Dollar. Highest bid on Mr. McBain's propert y = 500 Dollars. Bounty on the outlaw Cheyenne = 5 Thousand Dollars. Shooting bad guys while a young Claudia Cardinale takes a bath behind you = Priceless!
She's not, check out wikipedia, it's usefull you know..
Oh.. and how can ppl put Claudia Cardinale and Angelina Jolie together in the same sentence, the world is in trouble.
I mean Angelina is ok dont get me wrong but she fits in tomb raider not in the best western ever just look consistently at Claudia's eyes...see ? It's the emotional charge ! Many acteresses would pay a lot just to have a bit of that but it seems so natural in her....damn.
Awesome, great film, But I say, God damn!! She was the true definition of a "Woman." The cheek bones, perfectly shaped captivating eyes, that button nose, those full lips, ok Im exaggerating abit, but she was very beautiful. The first time I watched this film (which was totally different to any other Western I had saw), seeing Claudia Cardinale suddenly appear with this sweeping music in the background extraordinary.
Thank you GooseberryAJA, i can't find better words than "Claudia Cardinale in her most beautifull role as jill. ennio morricone with his most beautifull music in one of the most beautifull movies ever made" to sum up what you have so wonderfully shared here :)
Non fai in tempo ad arrivare a metà video che le foto della meravigliosa Claudia e la immortale colonna sonora del grande Morricone ti hanno già fatto allagare la tastiera del p.c...
I read the The Maestro composed this piece BEFORE the scene was even filmed, the reverse of how it's usually done, and they rigged up a PA system on the set and blasted this incredible piece for all to hear throughout the filming. Amazing!
I think Claudia Cardinale was born in France and not in Italy, but that does not change that she in my view must be one of the most beautiful women ever.
she was born in Tunis, Tunisia. Ive read both her parents were both Italian (Sicilian) but I also read her mother was french and her father was italian. In her first movies (the first 2 i think) her voice was dubbed because she didnt learn italian until she was older and was much more comfortable with french. what a woman!
This movie had it all the most Beautiful of all Leading Ladies in Claudia, the greatest tough guy ever Charles Bronson. One of cinema's greatest actors in Henry Fonda and an All Star cast, the cinematography, writing and score. WOW!!
My husband and I love the movie and Claudia , we bought the DVD and I love to watch it from time to time. :-))
Claudia Cardinale is our favorite actress, she doesn't even have to speak, her eyes show all of her different emotions.. words are not even neccessary.
This one of CC's most famous roles, the others being in 8 1/2, The Leopard and The Pink Panther. She's gorgeous but she was at her most beautiful in her movies from 1962-1965: Il bell'Antonio (Bell Antonio), Cartouche, La ragazza con la valigia (Girl with a Suitcase), etc. Not many people remember them but she was the most beautiful woman (and probably most photographed).
A bilion of books in the whole world and the words puts in them can not describe the moment and what you feel and see when you look her in those amazing eyes. I just can not stop looking them.....
Like you said "hakija13"...and to add..not even a billion musical notes in the whole world can put into explanation this cinematic milestone! The shivers of sparks this scene sends down any man's back as he watches it and watches her eyes.
The smoldering sensuality that she evokes is unparalleled. Also the emotions that the music brings to the surface-The haunting beauty with a touch of sadness is pure genius. All gods blessings to ENNIO
Es una mujer con gen personalidad y belleza, , me gustó buscar , tras encontrar algunas fotos y ver sus vídeos....

I've always wondered if her voice is overdubbed by another actress in the movie. Her English has quite a foreign accent, doesn't it? Pity they didn't use her actual voice and work it into the character, and who was the actress who did the dubbing?

I'm not really into mystery - so, for me -- forget Mona Lisa.
Here there is no mystery --- just the simplest of questions.

Silfe113 1 year ago
@Silfe113
You can't judge Angie's acting from Tomb Raider. Check out her other films like "A Mighty Heart" she's awesome!

@expertinfilms not sure they could pull it off ... it would be a totally different "feel" Jolie is not as sexually refined.

@RaikenXion And I say to you - you are not exaggerating. Every word you said - true.

Thank you GooseberryAJA, i can't find better words than "Claudia Cardinale in her most beautifull role as jill. ennio morricone with his most beautifull music in one of the most beautifull movies ever made" to sum up what you have so wonderfully shared here :)

I read the The Maestro composed this piece BEFORE the scene was even filmed, the reverse of how it's usually done, and they rigged up a PA system on the set and blasted this incredible piece for all to hear throughout the filming. Amazing!

I think Claudia Cardinale was born in France and not in Italy, but that does not change that she in my view must be one of the most beautiful women ever.
brasgoall11 2 years ago 4
she was born in Tunis, Tunisia. Ive read both her parents were both Italian (Sicilian) but I also read her mother was french and her father was italian. In her first movies (the first 2 i think) her voice was dubbed because she didnt learn italian until she was older and was much more comfortable with french. what a woman!

Claudia is born in La Goulette-Tunisia from sicilian father and mother and, yes, she is one of the most beautiful women ever

I was mesmerized by her eyes when I first saw them...Once Upon A time In The West...
And today I am still mesmerized when I see them...
She could be the most beautiful woman who has ever lived...

Jill is awesome. She's a rarity--a female in a male-dominated film with a personality. Usually they're just the love interest in these cases.
skinnerburgers 2 years ago 4
Think she is the first woman to play a major role in one of Sergio Leone's movies.
But she shares the same traits most other women in italo-western have: She's a whore and a motherly character at the same time.
