  • sounding good man!

  • You feel it, so i feel it.

    Favorites.

    Bless.

  • I'm no musician, but I know good music when I hear it. This is good music. Funk on. By the way, don't worry about the song being exact. No good cover of a song should be exact, it's your interpretation and it happens to rock.

  • @StormSong8 Thanks I appreciate the feedback!

  • I think you did a hell of a job! This is one of those songs that any artist can place his own touch on it and it will still be recognized! Relax and play from the heart just thnk about the saddest shit you ever witnessed or heard of and dwell on it then let it come out of your fingers!

  • good job man, really nice, the only thing i'd say is with some of those earlier bends, if you listen to the track, he bends up but doesn't release the bend (as in bring the bend back down - he just mutes it), i'm only constructively criticising here i'm not trying to put you down cause otherwise it was a good cover, well played !

  • @drdreday123 Yes, I have since learned how to do that, I havent mastered it, but I agree. I noticed it immediately and tried to focus on hitting the right note at the top of the bend, its hard to mute the "coming back down" of the bend. Thanks and I am alway looking for critique, I appreciate your honest feedback. Thanks... peace

  • yo bro thats some righteous tone & sutstain... Maggot Brain took me to kansas and over yonder like many cats it spoke to me... I might try and learn it 1 of these days...amen

  • Im 25 and been self teaching for two years. Youre vid help me a lot with grasping maggot brain. TNANKS! keep up the good work!

  • Eddie hazel with maggot brain embodied the essence of what music is.

    a Simple background

    a Simple scale impro

a easy playing (with technical parts just when necessary)

a lot of soul and inspiration.

That's why I think this is the best song to start improvising, it's not hard to have fun and the marge of progression is infinity.

Congratulations. I post the same vid for the same reasons!

  • Hey Thanks for watching.

I like your video too, great vibe. peace

  • i was expecting mediocre because of how tough the song is your incredible! this is one of the best covers ive seen

  • Thank you very much for your words!!!

  • hey you got it, just dont worry as much about notes but feeling. check out

    fretboard roadmaps

fretboard logic & the CAGED system

  • cool maan!

    *****

  • *****

  • thank you.

  • hey man i love that effect sound what pedal or effect did u use ???

  • Awesome, 5/5.

It's not perfect, but if you know this song and love it, you're my bro!

Advice : Try putting in a little more treble in your sound. Make it sound less like "wuuuuh" and more like "chiiiiiing". Compare your cover to the original and you'll understand. Also, use more vibrato.

    Anyway, great job

  • Thanks for the advice, I am working on the vibrato. Trying the BB King method shaking the wrist is very hard for me, it is much more natural for me to "wiggle" my finger, and trying to sneak the vibrato in between notes is a challenge. I am working on it. thanks for watching

  • Uh, my advice is to stop playing the notes. You think Eddie played this song for people to copy him? Just get in key, get out of key, get back in key and let wahtever is in you pour out.

People need to stop covering this song, and start playing it, if you know what I mean. :)

  • I have to learn what was done first before I can begin improvising. I am not that good to just be able to play what I feel just yet, but I am working on it. But I do understand, this song is truly about feeling and not about copying. You should check out Chiknfulio he "plays" the song, I hope to learn my way around the fretboard to express what I feel oneday. Thanks for the advice, its all a work in progress.

  • i know nothing about the guitar or how to play it, but from the sound of things, you're on the right track. keep it up man!

  • I appreciate the feedback. And if you want to learn an instrument, Youtube is the perfect place to start. Tons of lessons. Thanks for watching. peace

  • man... your set-up sounds really good. don't worry too much about the technicality. once you have the notes memorized, just feel out the bends and curls. every version is different. keep it up.

  • Thanks for watching, every day I learn something on this instrument.

  • Hey man good job, it's cool man, da song doesn't have to go exacly like da original, its important dat you add your own soul into it and feel it your own way. Anyways drop by n Check out my Cover , Peace Out man

  • Thanks for checking it out. I have yet to hear two people play this song the same, yet so many versions are cool to listen to. I checked yours out, and looks like you are having fun zoning out to this classic too. Whats the next song your learning? Keep enjoying the music. peace

  • hey what type of effect are you using there? it sounds really good. very much like hazel's tone

  • I use The Pod X3, I dont remember the exact effect I used. If you are familiar with the Pod, it was definetly one of the Low Gain effects. I am not sure how to get some of the feedback and distortion techniques that Eddie Hazel incorporated but the Pod is a good place to start if you dont have all the pedals. Thanks for watching. Check out 7Bloodi's version I think he nails some of those effects. peace

  • Not bad for a beginner! Keep up the good work : )

  • Thanks, I really wish I had started with the guitar when I was a teenager, but fumbling around as an adult, is still fun too...lol I am not good, by any means but I do enjoy re-connecting with all this music. Thanks for your encouragement. peace

  • I know what you mean...I play piano, but I'm not a pro either, lol. My problem is I don't have enough time to dedicate to it :(

  • Nice tone man, you did a very awesome job, keep practicing and rock on!

  • thanks, I actually wish I could practice alot more...lol My hands are still getting in my own way...lol but its still fun. thanks for watching and commenting. peace

  • awesome. youve inspired me to do the same thing and put it on youtube! 5 star

  • Thanks, check out a few of the other versions, there are folks really doing some great great renditions of this classic. Youtuber ChaseWatkins provided the backing track. check it out. peace

  • yeah i saw some other ones, and i loved slashblues or whatever one.

  • yo cool playin man, a lil practice and you should hav it down. One tip, on that first bend on the 15th fret, bend it to the right pitch, dont use the 12th on the high e string. Its much better that way, check my vid for what i mean man. Peace bro

  • Excellent

  • Thanks, I appreciate the comment.

  • like i said...yummy.

    i am thoroughly impressed.

    keep it up!!

  • umm umm good...lol I appreciate the encouragement. Attempting better melodies and thicker basslines for 2009! well really im still just learning and discovering... ;) peace lady.

  • I know what it is, it reminded me of "Shine on You Crazy Diamond", but with a bit more bluesy influence.

  • This was awesome. It reminded me of the haunting bluesy guitar, like David Gilmour or some of Buckethead's stuff.

    Great stuff, 5 stars.

  • Thank you. I am not familiar with the "shine on..." song but I will check it out, who is the artist? Some people call this style of song a ballad, so I guess I like guitar ballads...lol Thanks for watching. peace

  • very nice very nice. ur playing brought me to a different place. i jus posted a video of me playin wit the backing track but after watchin yours it makes me wanna take mine down hah keep playin man

  • that was so awesome. 6 minutes of an awesome euphoric bliss of music. i can't play nearly as good as you yet, i just got my guitar like a couple months ago so yah. this is my favorite guitar solo and you definately just lived up to its proportions.

  • You have seriously made my day!!! I am struggling to see progress in my playing, and your encouraging words, gives me hope that maybe I am gettin a little bit better. Please feel free to hit me up with any thoughts. ideas, questions, advice etc. I am still a beginner so im sure I can learn from you too. Once again thanks for checking out my vid, and your supportive comments. Keep having fun! peace

  • you are much too humble, this is very good. if you want a good lesson and laugh, listen to eddie botch his own song on the Meadowbrook, Live in Rochester MI, 1970 or 1971. this cut kind of blows gclintons attempt to take credit for the song... and get more royalty money from it than eddie.

Listen and feel eddie play it and listen to ChaseW below.

Mostly, make it YOURS. don't be like M"Robo" Hampton. he could play note for note, but there was little feeling or emotion in his version.

  • I really appreciate your comments. I have convinced myself that as a beginning student who is still learning the basics, I should adhere to the notes or learn how "IT" was played before i can play "it" my way. im overthinking it- but im learning that there are no rules to the journey...lol. thanks for the encouragement and info. peace

  • Sweet! You definitely took Eddie's playing style and made it your own.

As for advice, you may want to work on vibrato, it is a technique that every rock/funk guitarist must learn.

Also, I notice that you stress how you want to play the song exactly like the original track but in my opinion, the weak parts of the song were where it sounded like you were trying to replicate Maggot brain exactly.

Keep up the good work! I hope to have my maggot mind blown by your next performance. xD

  • Now that is a comment!! lol I appreciate the great advice, and you are right, I had more fun when I freestyled my way around the song instead of trying to imitate it. I figured if I learned "exactly" what he was doing it would give me some kind of secret insight into the playing, styling, and technical mechanics of Maggot Brain. NOT!! moving forward I wont stress imitation as much, I will try to stress emotion & creativity, a bit more. thanks for the encouragement and backing track. peace

  • That song was cool almost Hypnotizing. Keep doing your thing brother. Hey we got a black president now so anything is possible. You might just be the next Hendrinx... Henrydrinx LOL

  • LOL yo you crazy Henrydrix! Hendrix is a legend, im just a dude wit a hobby LOL. But good looking out, thanks for the encouragement, still having fun. Obama! holla.

  • I appreciate the encouragement. Coming from you that means a lot, Im trying man...lol Thanks for watching, I have a lot to learn in this song but this was fun. peace

  • Musician. well i will be. man you are a musician this is some good stuff. it's goin down in the fav. 5stars

  • I really appreciate this advice. I am constantly learning, I have been playing for a year. Still not very good, but I will be paying more attention to scales, to help with the improv and soloing. I have learned a few songs, but need to work on the theory stuff. There is so much to learn and ALL of it is important. thanks for watching. peace

  • Yea I need to get to the theory too. I think at first though just picking the guitar up and learning how to play is fine, after that the theory will just solidify it. It definitely sounds good, especially cuz it isn't easy to improv. Improving is really the when u start becoming a musician. Whats ur gear lookin like? Is that a strat?

  • Yup Fender American Special Mahogany HSS Stratocaster...lol I play thru a Pod X3, I dont have an amp yet. Well actually I play thru my Peavy Bass guitar amp. I understand the whole string muting thing you were talking about, Do you do it with your palm or with the edge of the pick? thanks for comments. peace

  • As far as the muting I guess it depends. Sometimes I use the pick other times I use my palm.

  • Good stuff. How long you been playin? I do have a few suggestions. Idk if it was intentional or not but when you bend the notes you can add emphasis by muting the note at the top of the bend. Bend the note like you normally do but hit the string to mute at the very top of the bend. Your improv was really good you just need to keep the scales in your head so you can keep it flowing. Just take a couple scales and translate them up and own the neck Keep at it and thanks for ur comment on my vid!
