I think that the constellation of any band depicts it's character and it's succes. Carlos Santana is a great musician and perhaps the greatest of them all . But, it also depends strongly on who, is backing him up. When a musician leaves a band, that particular band looses it's luster .
It doesn't sound the same anymore. It all depends on the right musicians with the right "click" who together, add that spark of magic which, makes a song have an impact that lasts and makes it unforgettable.
Amazing song off an amazing album!!!I lived in the Haight in the late '60's,and heard the San Francisco bands, including Santana, but never heard this album till today. Thanks for posting.
first time i took orange barrell i listened to caravan until dawn & watched the sun come up from a rooftop in nwk. nj summer 73? man i was never the same.....
@vincentjacque santana didnt need chepito to make good songs and chepito didnt need santana to make good songs, still when they worked together or not it was still awesome
You can't beat contra bass ! Great choice. You would think the group could have stayed together after this, one of the groups best! Cudos to the producer and engineer on this album; they kept Carlos Santana's guitar volume at the right level.
I think this particular album was at the top of the pile of all the "fusion' albums created by various groups in the late 60s/early 70s; it stands the test of time brilliantly......and..Carlos is coming to Auckland next month!!!
John McLaughlin wanted what Carlos Naturally Had! It took Carlos an album or two to get back on the "Santana Path". He should run off his producer that he has now and get rid of all of the Young star crap. Radio will kill Carlos as it does all it touches! Let Carlos be Carlos
Yes,hooptyheel, yes. And with the great Jaco Pastorius on guitar bass. Don't know if they would all have jelled, but if they had, the result would have been a self-contained trip.
.....yeah, just listned to this track again today in the car, with your comment in mind, '...flute solo makes me want to explode...' up LOUD, check that crash symbol at 5:08 after the High of the flute(!) and guitar piece!!!!!!! AWESOME and UNRELENTING!!! utterly FABULOUS!!!!!!!! ETERNAL CARAVANSERAI INDEED!!!!!!!!
This is the treat of You Tube for all us Music FANS!! We can all communicate together and appreciate each other's appreciations!! Thanks for your feedback, it's great!
was 16-17 when i 'discovered' this album of Santana (as a birthday present) in `74 or `75, which means i've been a little too late. i'd seen the cover in the record store's display for a long time though, always attracted to the picture and graphic design already. then i fell in love with the music. also being a Persian, it's given me great pleasure to see someone from a far land with a rich history and ancient culture being inspired by a word and concept from my birthplace. i'm honored in fact!
I have always contended that Carlos is the greatest guitar player.....and if i get a challenge i refer them to this song.....more than once they were speechless and conceded to my opinion.....such a brilliant piece of work and something that any aspiring guitarist should hear....just to keep them honest.. Cheers......El Fat Boy Texcino
@Seisan.....I agree....i suppose it is a matter of preference and in my case having seen the best guitarists live.....Page, Gibbons, Clapton, Eddie Van Halen.....and one of my favorite all time songs is Jimi H's....All Along the Watchtower............it's just my opinion that if some stuck a gun to my head and made me name my favorite guitarist.....it would be Carlos because of his wide range......and in a live concert ?....it was just almost an out of body experiance......cheers.......Fat Boy
Stunning track, amazing guitar work, brilliant keyboards and a grammy for the fiery percussion belting away. One of the finest group of musicians ever!! Caravanserai is one of the greatest albums you could listen to and after 37 years it still remains as fresh and inspiring as the day it was released!.
Probably the best comment at trying to sum up this Monumental Album, in all of its supreme musical skills, composition, artistry, expression, execution and sheer listenability, from the very day it was Gifted to all us MUSIC LOVERS it will NEVER Fade. Never. (so much for 'Hit Singles'...)
This album is a sitdown and enjoy it album,it flows so perfectly. There's just so much going on,it's great music never get's old............................
If Santana made just ONE more album like this, my life would be complete.

It was around this time that Carlos Santana went through a spiritual conversion (which explains the change in his music).

You know, Carlos was like 25 when this album came out, probably recorded a lot of it at 24 (his b-day is in the summer).
Which artist of that age today is anywhere near this level of sophistication?
