The version on the SMS is overall the better version, this was only released on the NES as the NES wasn't selling as well as the SMS in Europe.

Also, Sunsoft of Japan is a whole lot better than Sunsoft of America. Sunsoft of America kept modifying the Japanese versions and giving them crappy stuff. Sunsoft of America also took the bird's eye-view shooting engine of Metafight/Blaster Master and used it to create Fester's Quest, which is an awful game that got reviewed by the AVGN.

Man. This game, along with Shinobi, were made by Sega. Take my example from the AVGN's Wii Salute video about having a Sonic game on a Nintendo system. There were a few games made by Sega for play on the Nintendo Entertainment System.

Sega actually licensed these releases. Sunsoft developed the Famicom versions of Fantasy Zone and After Burner. Takara developed the Famicom version of Space Harrier. Tengan developed the NES versions of Fantasy Zone, After Burner and Shinobi. Sonic was just made to support the Mega Drive/Genesis.
