What is so ridiculous about a survival kit? Why don't you go get lost in the woods and not have ANYTHING for survival. I am a big survivalist. By the way, your "IMPROVED SURVIVAL KIT" is missing some stuff. And i think i spelt ridiculous wrong.
your idea to boil in a plastic bag won't work. just get water purification tablets. and as far as "kit's being stupid", i agree that carrying something like that on you at all times is impractical and annoying. the idea is that you have a survival kit AVAILABLE when you most likely will need it. make one for your car, your home, and that's all you need. if you want a lightweight edc, get a pocket knife and steel pill fob keychain (fill with $10 bill, matches, water purification tablets)
hmmmm, a pen? what happens when it gets wet? never going to run out of matches? hose clamps? mate comon, your gear doesnt have to be high tech at all just put some research and effort into it looking for better/lighter items, and tailor your kit to where you spend most of your time.
Not near water, you can use a fishing kit to make traps for birds and small animals. Better to have someting and not need it than to need it and not have it.
Just take what you need to meet the Rule of 3s and basic needs.
I can tell you're young, because you "have all the answers." I pray you don't have to learn too many lessons the hard way.
@hoosierarcher great advice I could not say it better about (Improved Survival Kit) there is so many use for fishing kits one time we use fishing line to sew up a tent or a large arm cut I LIKE THE WAY YOU THINK AND CARE ABOUT OTHER'S
@scarefiction That's true, but I don't consider 2 lbs (1 kg) to be too heavy for me- for a serious survival kit. I distribute the weight on my body when out in the woods, otherwise, it's usually sitting in the car or on a table near the door. I do have smaller, more basic kits that can fit in a small belt pouch scattered in the car, at work, in my pockets, etc. I haven't weighed them.
@dtprince96 My field testing of the commando saw indicated that it is inefficient so I burn up too many calories and wear myself out cutting wood. I have found that barring a good chopper, a sawzall Demolition blade (10 tpi) is about perfect for the job - and can even cut rebar (if really needed). I even made a folding handle for it.
@DarcMac You could sharpen the other side of the saw blade, and it'll hold a pretty decent knife edge actually, and you've just added tons of versatility with no extra weight.
@TheDavidMalachi I actually did that years ago as an E&E tool design idea that I got from an old Vietnam SF vet originally. So razor sharp I nearly cut my finger off! I can't do it with my folding handle design b/c the spine is exposed; I would need a sheath for it. Good to see someone else has thought of it too. Thanks!
you think survival kits are stupid because you're probably taking them with you in urban enviroments you don't need them. Of course taking a kit in such an area is dumb, but are they dumb in general? Going for a hike up a mountain or in the forest and you might find you'll want a peice or two you'll want thats in that kit.
Also you pack way too many heavy items you don't need which is another reason why your won't carry it. Its simply too heavy & a burden. youtube the smaller ones

You will end up with no shelter, no water (you said yourself no water around so what are your fancy bags going to collect?) fire will be limited since you dont have a sustainable fire source like a firesteel lets also point out NO KNIFE...really!? wow.

Add some super glue for cuts. You have a great for the excess pleasures and not much on the safety side. You should add some glucose tablets and some fishing items to catch food.
even if they're heavy duty, i'm not sure that would work reliably without melting the bag by accident on a hot rock or whatever. and putting the rocks in the water? not such a great idea.
like i said in my last post.... stick your stuff inside a small aluminium container and then use the container to boil water when you need to. all you need is a solid knife, a tinderbox with striker, 3 feet of braided wire all inside an aluminium bottle or tin.
jubilee clip with nailes, to make a spear?..... why not just carve a stick into a point?
why is there no knife (like, a proper knife, not a craft-knife) in your survival kit?
really the only things you could forseeably need in the short term are a good solid knife, a tinder box with striker, 3 feet of braided wire and a small aluminium (lightweight) bottle or container.
you stick it all in the container when walking. you can hang the bottle from a stick, over a fire, to boil water safely.
You asked for reasons against not carrying a 'survival kit', well, here goes. 1) Having a kit on you, at least with the minimal items, means WHEREVER you go, you have it with you, and you don't have to think "Did I pack ____ (insert item)?" Because you've got it if it's part of your kit. 2) At least 50% of the time the item you end up not having with you, because you thought the kit approach was 'stupid', that's the item you end up needing right now. Go ahead and slim your kit, but take one.
when i started to read the comments i was like these guys are being harsh now that i relise that you are indeed a dumbass my pack weighs around thirty pounds most of my friends consider that to be light i only really carry stuff i need the stuff you have in that bag wouldn't help you survive in walmart.
Well, that pile of shit is NOT anywhere in the hemisphere of a survival kit. Mine weighs a good bit more than 500 grams, but I'll happily loot your corpse for pocket lint to light my fire when you die of stupidity come disaster time.
You ask for comments - You said survival kits are stupid. The kit is there to provide what you need when you find yourself in a suddenly changing circumstance. If you never leave walmart then you can forget the survival kit. You wont need it but that doesnt make them stupid. By definition a survival situation is a situation you are not prepared for. If you are prepared for the situation then its not likely to be a threat to your survival
500 grams is just a hair under 1Lb 2oz, They used to say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, or sumpin' like that. I think the reason people make and carry kits is because somtimes while going about life stuff happens, and you can never be sure when or where or for how long. I like to have options. But it's up to the indvidual. Peace and good will.
wow, you must of wanted poeple to hate on you. You are right carry what you need, but it seems YOU don't know what you need or have ever really been in a bad way. Maybe you will find out one day, it isn't all flowers and hearts out there.....and you will be missing what it takes...

So what is the best survival kits/items on the air plane?? if you cant carry your own survival kit on airplane what will you do if you are in some emergency moments?
I suggest TSA friendly survival items can be Whistle , Signal Mirror , Fire steel and a good realiable flashlight something like Fenix ( AA batteries) and basic first aid kit including Burn gel ?? what you think? Can you give me some suggestion pls?
WOW, where to start, I wouldn't carry that kit if It weighed 5 grams. being a geologist wouldn't try to drink water purified from a rock sample bag, although ti's tough it is not food grade plastic and may melt on contact with rocks hot enough to bring water to boil. get a multi tool, that utility blade break off into quarter inch segments is useless. hose clamps, nails. mini flares inner tubes??? Common man, you went through the trouble to make a video show us how suckola your kit is! hahahaha.
I guess you could make a Spear with nails held to a stick with a hose clamp but without a multi tool how is he going to get that clamp tight enough to hold the nail steady is he using to go frog gigging or is he going to pull a Tom Hanks spear fishing like in Castaway? i would put more trust in a fishing kit. inner tubes? He has matches knows bow drill and fire kit in the tin. he has 5 ways to start a fire, i would like to see those flares in action.
At survivaldude26: stop posting about things you know nothing about, and stop pretending to be some kind of expert with your user name. Only someone with a death wish would lose their matches, plus with a name like survivaldude26, not having matches should be no problem. Use English!
You basic problem is that you kit is not practical. If your not willing to carry a item, you probably don't need it. My survival kit is small enough that I usually forget I have it. Remember this is for worst case scenarios. An extra blade, a way to make a quick emergency fire, and a way to purify water is sufficient. Unless you are planing on getting lost somewhere no one could get to you for a week or more that is all you need.
Ya but fishing gear can also be used to catch smaller animals and birds if you tie a hookto the line and tie that to a tree with some bait you could catch a rabit or a bird
Oh and if you aint near water you can still use a fishing kit. Like if you dont have cord, or you need stitches because of injury, also hooks are useful. It is a crap kit you have, its a bit out of the ordinary and you miss some essentials. Also if you think your good enough not to carry an SK then your dumb enough to die in the wild
@0Doc0 I agree with you, but I think he meant he was going to determine the specific needs for that trip and bring that instead of bringing the same stuff each trip.
I'd suggest putting all of these things inside a ziploc bag and then put the ziploc inside that bag. It'd keep it way dryer if not completely dry than just the bag.
Whoa there Survivaldude26...positive feedback will get the point across :) We should assume that any one who is intelligent enough to see the need for a kit...has a good basic knowledge of survival tecniques... and use those tools to complement that knowledge. Case in point knife plus a small stick with multiple cuts shaved into it equals a tinderstick.
ur soo stupid.u freaking idiot .u said all u need is the tube of matches, wut if u lose the tube.wut the hell r u gonna do now.u should listen 2 ryanjcus.u should always carry atleast 2 ways of starting fire.stupid.even the fire kit should carry for tinder.wut ru gonna do if it is wet and u cannot find tinder ashole.
What do you need hose clamps for? Artery clamps for emergency cardiac surgery or what? Instant spear? What about carving a stick with a knife? It's only going to be used for fishing anyway. Hell, you only need a few of those items to survive. As a matter of fact, waterproof matches, a knife, probably a couple of emergency mylar blankets, and a little rope is all you need besides warm clothing on your back to survive for weeks. Oh, and a lightweight weapon (firearm) wouldn't hurt either.
@GLK30 Some of the stuff is just for luxury... you dont have to have it but it doesnt hurt to have. As for hose clamps they are alot like zip ties, bailing wire, or duct tape. You can use them for almost anything. You can use the clamps to secure a knife to a stick to create a spear. You can use them to replace a broken loop and or clip on a bag, ect... they are actually really handy to have =)
REALISTICALY u more than likely are not going to use 65% of what comes in a bought survival kit when it comes to FIRE, FOOD, WATER, and SHELTER. I really wonder if those individuals have ever been stranded without electricity, food, and water for days because of a natural disaster.
Of yea not to mention the robbers, looters, and thieves that seem to come around when the population evacutes.
Maybe the reason you think survivial kits are stupid, is because of the one you have. You have a lot of crap you don't need, and are missing stuff you do. In a kit that small, just think shelter, fire, water. Include only the items that you need to obtain each one efficiently. This of course is no replacement for a full comprehensive kit, but you complained about weight, so keep it simple.
Survival Kits arent stupid. Yes you only carry what you will need. But if you go hiking or camping, its good to have one. But if you don't need or use a survival kit...then why the hell make one in the first place??
Even that stupid kit isn't that heavy. How many calories would you save by not carrying it? Probably not as much as are in a candy bar. Therefore, eating a candy bar before carrying the kit makes it totally genius.
I'm curious about the heavy duty bags and using it to purify water using rocks. Does this work? Won't the plastic melt from the heat? Otherwise very nice video.
very likely yes, most plastics melt at around 150 Celsius, I'm guessing this bag is likely made of HDPE which has a melting point around 130 C. Although boiling water will only reach 100 C in order to raise the water to this level your rocks will have to be quite a bit above that. For instance if your water starts at room temperature and your water to rock weight ratio is 1:1, your rocks will have to be at least 170 C in order to boil it. If those rocks touch the plastic it will melt. sorry.
man, this was hilarious! "my kit contains this and that and this and that... but i decided it is stupid and i won't carry it! oh wait, i forget about the nails! which are stupid too and i'm not gonna carry! but i'll carry the matches and not the fishing kit! (btw, you don't have a fishing kit!)
haha u paranoide bastards.. whats the idea here that u fall off a cliff and leave ur pack on top.. and be stuck with ur precious belt kit haha.. seems like u wanna just pack a back pack
If you're going on a several day camping trip in a remote area you should have a survival kit.
some people here are criticising you're flares. Those are propably the one thing you'll end up needing. The often portrayed scenario of losing your backpack and be dependent on your kit is very unlikely.
Usually ppl end up getting injured and/or stuck out in remote areas and need to signal for help.
It's not stupid. It's just being prepered at all times. Or when tradegy strikes, one will just regret of not having such kit. I'll make too and just keep in a accessible place in the house. Who knows, am here in storm struck Philippines. Thanks!
Survival kits are important if you're going somewhere where the chances are high you might get stranded. This could be the mountains, the desert, even stranded in a boat on the ocean. I suggest reading up on survival in areas you might not be familiar in. Hmmm, I wonder what an urban city survival kit would look like? The one thing I would add to any kit is a deck of cards and a puzzle mag. Because, if you are stranded and bored ya gotta keep your hopes up and brain active.
foil blankets suck. i dont have 1 in mine. zip ties are extremely useful. really all you need to survive for a long period of time. and live off thel and as long as u want. is a poncho a good knife a sharpening stone a map 2 compasses and a lighter. and boom
Carry things not easy in the woods. Interesting nails & a hose clamps. good 1 Big Garbage bags, zip lock bags & rope. fish hooks can catch squirrels, birds, etc. Flashlights are sometimes handy, tiny 1 duct tape, signal mirror basic saw(good saw) Knife, foil or can to hold, boil & cook . bandana, good one, good ideas but some r in question. flairs, iffy, get a cheap light little sparking tool. light plastic poncho, thermal blanket. shelter, fire, water, light.
You're right to an extent, that survival kits are unnecessary - if you're trained in survival skills. (I studied under Tom Brown).
But for a little easier time, take at least a knife, a lg garbage bag stuffed in your back pocket (rain poncho or stuffed with leaves, a makeshift sleeping bag), plus some way of signaling.
Everything else is for for people who aren't trained in survival skills. In fact, I can do without anything at all, from my training. But I really would prefer having a knife.
I agree, your survival kit should reflect your training. Its the bare minimum tools to make things a little easier. Some of these people aren't getting it... sadly.
What!?! Survival kits can make the difference between life and death. Survival kits are not stupid!!!! you don't think you need them because you don't expect to get in a survival situation, however, survival situations don't come up expectedly. They occur accidently or randomly. and fishing kits are good even when you are away from water because u can use them for different arrays of traps. 500 grams is worth it if u happen to come up on a survival situation.
most butane lighters wont break from being dropped, most cheap $1 lighters wont either... if wors comes to worse you still have the flint and steel to create a spark. Matches, however can become unuseful through many more things. Even the waterproof ones can be useless if the wood gets too wet and looses integrity.
A survival kit should consist of mans' 4 basic needs. Food, water, fire and shelter. So matches suck, use a lighter, iodine tabs for water, a knife for hunting (or give yourself a 1up with a leatherman), and string for shelter... that shouldn't be too heavy.
I don't think anyone got your humer .oh you forgot toothpicks

also.... boiling water inside a polythene bag?
even if they're heavy duty, i'm not sure that would work reliably without melting the bag by accident on a hot rock or whatever. and putting the rocks in the water? not such a great idea.
like i said in my last post.... stick your stuff inside a small aluminium container and then use the container to boil water when you need to. all you need is a solid knife, a tinderbox with striker, 3 feet of braided wire all inside an aluminium bottle or tin.
purklefluff 1 year ago
jubilee clip with nailes, to make a spear?..... why not just carve a stick into a point?
why is there no knife (like, a proper knife, not a craft-knife) in your survival kit?
really the only things you could forseeably need in the short term are a good solid knife, a tinder box with striker, 3 feet of braided wire and a small aluminium (lightweight) bottle or container.
you stick it all in the container when walking. you can hang the bottle from a stick, over a fire, to boil water safely.

ChrisC30 1 year ago
when i started to read the comments i was like these guys are being harsh now that i relise that you are indeed a dumbass my pack weighs around thirty pounds most of my friends consider that to be light i only really carry stuff i need the stuff you have in that bag wouldn't help you survive in walmart.
mustangfootball63 1 year ago
Well, that pile of shit is NOT anywhere in the hemisphere of a survival kit. Mine weighs a good bit more than 500 grams, but I'll happily loot your corpse for pocket lint to light my fire when you die of stupidity come disaster time.

FInally and intelligant person. The Seattle Mountaineers 10 essentials was or should not be a kit but what you carry.
cheers
teb0atoz 1 year ago

Yeah I have a question for everyone.

Common man, you went through the trouble to make a video show us how suckola your kit is! hahahaha.
RECOIL64 2 years ago
@RECOIL64 hose clamps and nails are used to make a spear flares are the best signaling tools ever invented and inner tubes are able to light when wet
JakeReptiles 2 years ago
I guess you could make a Spear with nails held to a stick with a hose clamp but without a multi tool how is he going to get that clamp tight enough to hold the nail steady is he using to go frog gigging or is he going to pull a Tom Hanks spear fishing like in Castaway? i would put more trust in a fishing kit. inner tubes? He has matches knows bow drill and fire kit in the tin. he has 5 ways to start a fire, i would like to see those flares in action.

cmwilson84 2 years ago
You basic problem is that you kit is not practical. If your not willing to carry a item, you probably don't need it. My survival kit is small enough that I usually forget I have it. Remember this is for worst case scenarios. An extra blade, a way to make a quick emergency fire, and a way to purify water is sufficient. Unless you are planing on getting lost somewhere no one could get to you for a week or more that is all you need.
cmwilson84 2 years ago
where do you get a flare pen and how much does it cost
napalmonfire 2 years ago
Ya but fishing gear can also be used to catch smaller animals and birds if you tie a hookto the line and tie that to a tree with some bait you could catch a rabit or a bird
Anglingissweet 2 years ago
FIre= Matches, lighter, striker... etc
Water= Bottle, flask, bag, iodine tabs.
Food= Fishing gear, snares.
Shelter= Poncho (or plastic, tarp)
Most essential, knife
Oh and if you aint near water you can still use a fishing kit. Like if you dont have cord, or you need stitches because of injury, also hooks are useful. It is a crap kit you have, its a bit out of the ordinary and you miss some essentials. Also if you think your good enough not to carry an SK then your dumb enough to die in the wild

GLK30 2 years ago 9

If you don't need all that stuff, why are you putting them in your survival kit? Why are you showing us a survival kit you think is stupid?
jimjamerman 2 years ago 4
Maybe the reason you think survivial kits are stupid, is because of the one you have. You have a lot of crap you don't need, and are missing stuff you do. In a kit that small, just think shelter, fire, water. Include only the items that you need to obtain each one efficiently. This of course is no replacement for a full comprehensive kit, but you complained about weight, so keep it simple.

I'm curious about the heavy duty bags and using it to purify water using rocks. Does this work? Won't the plastic melt from the heat? Otherwise very nice video.
flapjack9999 2 years ago
very likely yes, most plastics melt at around 150 Celsius, I'm guessing this bag is likely made of HDPE which has a melting point around 130 C. Although boiling water will only reach 100 C in order to raise the water to this level your rocks will have to be quite a bit above that. For instance if your water starts at room temperature and your water to rock weight ratio is 1:1, your rocks will have to be at least 170 C in order to boil it. If those rocks touch the plastic it will melt. sorry.

bodunchar 2 years ago
If you're going on a several day camping trip in a remote area you should have a survival kit.
some people here are criticising you're flares. Those are propably the one thing you'll end up needing. The often portrayed scenario of losing your backpack and be dependent on your kit is very unlikely.
Usually ppl end up getting injured and/or stuck out in remote areas and need to signal for help.
ExON00 2 years ago

Kits are awesome but there are some tools you need to carry. Carry what you need in the area and tools you can't make easily.
gaaraman08 2 years ago
You're right to an extent, that survival kits are unnecessary - if you're trained in survival skills. (I studied under Tom Brown).
But for a little easier time, take at least a knife, a lg garbage bag stuffed in your back pocket (rain poncho or stuffed with leaves, a makeshift sleeping bag), plus some way of signaling.
Everything else is for for people who aren't trained in survival skills. In fact, I can do without anything at all, from my training. But I really would prefer having a knife.
skecanj 2 years ago
I agree, your survival kit should reflect your training. Its the bare minimum tools to make things a little easier. Some of these people aren't getting it... sadly.
shawneegeek 2 years ago
500 grams is worth it if u happen to come up on a survival situation.
whitestaggg777 2 years ago
what happens when you drop your lighter the fluid gets out, or eventually runs out, huh? where are you now?
bandofbrosfan1 2 years ago
most butane lighters wont break from being dropped, most cheap $1 lighters wont either... if wors comes to worse you still have the flint and steel to create a spark. Matches, however can become unuseful through many more things. Even the waterproof ones can be useless if the wood gets too wet and looses integrity.
shawneegeek 2 years ago
i use a empty lighter to get a spark on lint and i get a fire every time :)
gaaraman08 2 years ago
A survival kit should consist of mans' 4 basic needs. Food, water, fire and shelter. So matches suck, use a lighter, iodine tabs for water, a knife for hunting (or give yourself a 1up with a leatherman), and string for shelter... that shouldn't be too heavy.
shawneegeek 2 years ago
What about signaling (Whistle, Signle Mirror), Navigation (Compass), And fire isn't shelter so a Space Blanket would be good.
