In this version he really tells the story, now a days it sounds like he's singing to get some pussy. I mean c'mon, we all know that he is still freakin talented.. and we all know that he's capable of doing all those tricks with his, but it isn't needed to tell the story. Ultimately it is the singer himself the only one responsible for this. Even if what you said could be generalized to all or most people (which I doubt, because many people today very much love styles of singing that do not involve such "riff or run") it still does not justify him trading in such a masterful technique for a "riff or run" style. Rather, Brian looks arrogant now and tends to oversing his songs apparently to show off. The songs just get lost in the midst of shoutings and so on.
