One of my all time favourite sopranos. Her control and roundness of notes were always breathtaking. And one of the few sopranos who could act as well. I miss her...
um...does she die because she dies, or does she pass out from that last note...all in all, though, the best SUNG mad scene, despite the monty python ending...what a singer!
Anna Moffo is by far the best Lucia . She has great style...with a fragility and yet a strongly dramatic and expressive voice. I love her Lucia and find her even better than Callas actually. Moffo just IS Lucia.

If the soprano sings the Mad Scene in the Tomb. Where does the tenor sing the Tomb Scene
in the Moat? Some director with his own ideas.
God Donizetti's worked well for awhile. The madness of Lucia needs to happen in front of the COURT she is loony but not a solopsist.
But I can close my eyes. Moffo sings wonderfully but if you are going to go dubbed anyhow get an actress for the visual and Dame Joan (IMHO the best Lucia) for the vocal
Moffo still stood above many sopranos in those years. Why use another voice for her when she has built an entire carreer with her own voice? She was one of the few that had the looks as well as the voice going for her. Too many people would recognize Sutherland's voice btw, there isn't a voice worse than hers to use as a dubbing voice.
She sings wonderfully... but why the silly direction? It looks more like a Benny Hill parody than a filmed opera.. pity! I'll just close my eyes and listen
excuisite!!!!she has something of Maria Callas!!!!!! my good,incredible...please listen to her,and then listen to Maria Callas and u will see a great similarity
I think she's much closer to Edda Moser. They have similar voices and technique. Moser on the other hand was a dramatic coloratura (with a heavier and darker voice)
Thoug nI don't get Lafranchi directing, and I don't like how poorly the dubbing is done I absolutely adore Moffo. Though I love her recording of Lucia with Bergonzi (my favourite of all Lucias I have heard) I just adore this version of Spargi d'amaro. Her voice, and musicality is impecable and her acting made me cry a little. Beautiful, thank you.
She's brilliant. This is one of the first opera performances that I actually enjoyed. It was Moffo, Sutherland and Sills that got me heavily into opera.
but no one is like sutherland especially the 1959 sutherland's debut no one has the crytal clear voice plus agility plus flexibility plus the experience plus how did she still singing and runing at the stage etc etc

At her best, she was brilliant. Even in this silly production, it's great to hear her gorgeous voice.

Good lord, a really stupid production, but she is one luscious woman. What a voice.

i do too dont understand the director,so how does lucia die?
harpguy18 3 years ago
I don't understand why the director envisioned Lucia as Isadora Duncan dancing on a lawn, but Anna Moffo has a personal triumph
of superb singing.

Una Lucia perfetta...voce agile e angelicata ma anche pastosa e vellutata :)
Angeleaf 3 years ago 3
She reminds me of Kate Bush in her Wuthering Heights video(s). I'm really glad she didn't trip on her own dress!

the thing about her voice that I love is the color and evenness throughout it. Its like velvet

She doesn't LOOK crazy enough. They need to make her paler with dark circles, as the libretto says.

I was being sarcastic about the production.

Sounded to me like you were saying that Moffo wasn't a good enough combination of vocals and looks.
Winn89 3 years ago
My post was poorly stated. Moffo is excellent here.

I don't understand your comment. This is Moffo's voice. Did you think it was Sutherland's?
Catalogerman 3 years ago
@Catalogerman That she was lip-synching to Sutherland's voice as no one thinks a soprano could look as visually appealing as Moffo.

I stick to Moffo. Sutherland was great too, though never showed believable performances. But what heavenly sounds she produced!

The greatest of the filmed Lucias!
Elisabetta611 4 years ago
Beautifully sung. It's such a shame about her vocal decline and the fact she continued to sing for so long.
This however was wonderful

Anna is positively radiant. Such beautiful voices ease pain, they calm the senses and leave one desirous for more. Brava!

my god she is just beautiful in this aria... not as spot on with ornamentation as Sills... entertaining and lovely soprano.

they're both quite different...
Moffo sings it more dramatically, and Sutherland more as a crazy woman; though certainly Moffo's acting here represents a crazy woman.
