@rebldomakr99 ...i know!! i almost wanted to make sound clips 4 my mp3 player, so i could hear those words over and over when ever i wanted. hit alot of nails on the head w/me!!
I came out in 1974, at 16 years old, in Buffalo, NY. The same dynamic was happening on a smaller scale. We just didn't get as much press. Google Madelyn Davis....she may shed some light. It's nice to see "before" and "after". Keep fighting the good fight! We aren't done yet!
I came out in 1981 in Winnipeg Manitoba, Canada. If someone had told me then that Canada would allow Gay marriage in my life time, I would not have believed it... We had to hide back then, but no more!!! I had bought a book called "Word is Out", the companion book to this film! I still have it. We had so little information and this book and its stories was so important to me... I would love to know what has happened to the people in the film. I hope their lives were good...I know Peter died...
Prior to tonight, I had seen only bits and pieces of this documentary. The interesting part was where one of the ladies said it would probably be 2 generations later before people began to look at others and say, "You're ok".
She was almost right, except for people's bigotry, and the current political climate where some wish to move the calendar back to the 50s. We have to keep literally pushing forward, sad to say....
Fantastic! This was a ground breaking movie and meant so much to me in 1977 when I was coming out. I have watched the original many times and it was just wonderful to catch up with the folks in the movie 32 years later! Can't wait to view the finished product. Very best wishes.
love Word is Out! know several of the people. My friend Tede Mathews was the best friend a guy could ever have! I lived in his SF apartment in 1978. Another guy lived in my building here in Newark NJ in the 2000 decade. A work colleague in NYC in the 1980s/90s was a good friend of Peter Adair. Besides that just the incredible stories of the people. And so many really great people! Wow!
This is so awesome!! I am super excited to see the updates on all the people from this movie. This was probably the first movie I ever saw with real people - or otherwise - who had a gay family like I did. I remember when I was a little girl and saw Harriet with her two dads and it was neat to see another family like mine. Plus the lesbian moms and their kids too. So I think it's cool you're going to interview them all again!! Can't wait for this to hit DVD.
This documentary made a huge impact on my life. I look forward to getting reacquainted with the incredible men and women 30 years later. Thanks and hugs to the Mariposa Film Group.
I'm tearing up.
