It was revealed later in Higurashi that Shion had gone batshit insane when she became convinced that the Sonozaki family was responsible for the disappearance of her crush, Satoshi. She killed a few of the town council members, abducted Mion and disguised herself as her sister so she could lure in and kill whomever her warped mind believed led to Satoshi's disappearance.

@ggn3 It doesn't explain it in the anime, since it was so confusing, but in the visual novel, it explains that Mion(the one you think is Mion) was born Shion and they liked to switch as kids, but one day, they were switched and the family decided to put the tattoo on the Mion you know. Because they could be told apart by the tattoo, they had to stay that way. That's why the Mion you know was crying and kept saying it was so unfair that only the Shion you know was being punished.

@ClansoftheOld: While I haven't played the visual novel game, I've read up on details with Higurashi that weren't mentioned in the anime, including the major detail you brought up with the Sonozaki sisters and Frederica Bernkastel's connection to Rika with all the alternate Hinamizawas. Yet considering this detail on the sisters is lost to those who haven't played or researched on the games, I'm acknowledging the nutty one as Shion and the imprisoned one as Mion.

To add on to your very nicely said reason for referring to the caged one as Mion and the crazy one as Shion, it should be noted that, due to the switch, Mion, who was born as Shion, basically "became" Mion, when she was branded with the tattoo of a demon and forced to be their heir to the Sonozaki Family. Although Mion is the younger sister, who was born with the name Shion, tattoo is permanent. Therefor, she is permanently "Mion" for the rest of her life. Yay~ o 3o

They choose not to tell anyone at all for some reason and now Shion(aka Mion) is jealous of her sister "Mion" because she is family head, she has a romantic realtionship with Keichi while she don't have one. She is jealous of Rena because she says her demon is eviler and stronger than hers. And she goes on murder rampage hell bent vegence

When she hangs up, Shion tases Mion, and takes her to the cells. Shion comes back and tases the village leader [aka grandma], and unknowingly kills her. After this, Shion continues to disguise herself as Mion in order to draw away suspicion from herself, and to lure people to her torture chamber.

The tattoo thing happened when they were just children, so the name swap really is irrelevant, but technically, their names and positions are reversed the whole series because they switched places when they were younger. So, technically, Shion is Mion and Mion is Shion, by birth, and only the twins know about it. That's why Shion (by anime name) got the family head Demon, even though Mion (by anime name) got the tattoo.

@ggn3 Yes, but they don't include the detail about the tattoo in the anime. ^^ The Sonozaki twins got switched when they were young, so their names are technically backward the whole series. :) But they don't have enough time to explain that in the anime, so they don't go into it. Also, it would be just downright confusing, in this arc especially. So, that's why Shion has the "demon," not Mion. Because she's older, even though they swapped! ;) It's all in the visual novels, I believe!
