all you need for free wifi hotspot to work on 2.2.2 is download wireless tether 2.0.8, gingerbreak 1.20 and astro 3.0.2 install them and enjoy

Yeah, it activates the wifi and it shows its working but next time u make a video like this, try opening the internet on the device recieving the hotspot for proof. It doesnt work, i've tried

@Lardbutt200 The update that came out back around 3/21/2011 fixed the hole that this was taking advantage of. If you watch the video on a computer instead of a phone, you can see the window that says just what I told you.

@SillyDJ95 I believe there's a thread over at Android Central describing how to downgrade the device to the firmware containing this exploit; it was part of a guide on how to root the device (although the latter rooting steps aren't necessary). However, unless you cannot use an ad hoc network, you might as well root the device if you follow the guide.

Agreed with FortySeven. Sprint snuck an update to the Optimus S and disabled it. My wife is pissed. If anyone knows how to undo the release, feel free to share. Otherwise, do not waste your time.

I am sure most have heard of this already, however others are unaware that the Hotspot Widget app no longer works due to the recent update. Until an update for Hotspot Widget comes out some day, DO NOT BOTHER DOWNLOADING IT for now. Or those that already download it either leave it there or remove and hope the update for it (Hotspot Widget) do release.

@michealmoorehead, the widget is free and so is using it. Buy an optimistic and try it for yourself. This doesn't work on just any android phone.  I've tried it on the EVO and it didn't work.

First you had it on 3g internet and that's why it had an error turn on wiring first then go to it and turn it on and that wiring widget will still charge it is a free apparently but not free hotspot

thanks really good video! I installed the widget on my phone today and it worked like a charm. I've heard different things from different people i'm not sure if sprint is gonna charge me the extra money just for tethering capabilities. I know that sprint asks for like 30 bucks a month to tether.

@ajproc123, setting a password is a good idea but I didn't set one because I usually only use it for a few minutes at a time but since most devices save passwords it wouldn't be that big of a deal to set one.

@beatboxer10001 No, it uses the antenna to accept connections via DHCP. It cannot connect to two networks at the same time using the same network adapter.

This has been a LIFE SAVER for me....thank you so much for this video. My job at the airport here in Phoenix we are down below the terminals and the public WiFi is just terrible....this APP works great....

The first day I tried it on my laptop in my car driving from Phoenix to Tucson...and it worked awesome...

I hope we can keep this a secret....so that Sprint does not catch wind of this! Just as others mentioned....use it sparingly....turn it off...and don't let tons of your friends connected

Not right now. Sprint will probably patch this in their next patch but right now it works without paying the $30.
