Can you explain how your system is setup? Let's say I had a wah that I wanted to run in the front of my amp and the g-system through the effects loop. Is there a seemless way to set this up? I'm thinking about getting a g-system but I'm new to this routing and patching world. Thanks
yes it's true. there's no power switch and you have to unplug the power cable in order to turn it off. no idea why. i use a power conditioner which has a master power switch which i use for everything, so it's not a big deal. you could do the same thing with a basic power strip.
My budy asked me, what the hell are you doing, why'd you unplugging cable every time you wanna turn it of? I said to him, you shut this girl down I'll give her to you for free :)
@bgtocak it's true there is no power switch on the g-system. you turn it off by unplugging the power cable, or you can plug it into a power conditioner which has a master power switch.
Finally got the G system, nice red shinny one too!!! But i`m having a hard time avoiding clipping, i guess the channel volumes affect the loop send levels right? I like the channel vol at max, it gets a nicer tight tone, but it clips the g system inputs like crazy, how do you have your levels set up within the G and the channel volumes?
I`m wondering if using a 2 cable method versus a 4 would be better, i know i`d loose the front end part but i might get better signal/noise ratios....
@framuscobra My read on this is there really is no "boost" - everything else is attenuation, so when you're "boosting" you're just going back to unity gain. There's a very good .PDF whitepaper someone wrote about this - I'll try to find the link and post back
@moucon Thanks for the info, i think the white paper your refering to is Laird`s one, i have it. I finally hooked up up everything W/D/W,so i`m not going through the Cobra`s loop at all. I`m using the line out to drive the G and them out to a stereo power amp out to my 2 outer cabs. Whoaaa, talk about tone now, i`m never going back.
@skullskate13 going direct through the g-system does make things simpler, especially around signal to noise ratios, but the downside is that all your time-based effects like delay, chorus, etc. happen before the preamp and not after as they would in the effects loop. the sound will be different and there are arguments both ways about which way to go.
@moucon that's correct. you set your master volume on your amp to whatever it needs to be for boosted solos on the g-system, then use unboosted rhythm patches for everything else and it will attenuate the volume.
Hey there, i also have a Framus Cobra and i`m looking into buying a G System myself, the new limited one. Does the unit suck tone a lot, that`s my main concern about it. I really like my tone strait in the amp but how is it going through the G?
i wouldn't say it affects the tone that much. for me, the convenience of the g-system outweighed the downsides.
i like driving the front of any amp with an eq or overdrive pedal, but with pedals in the analog loops of the g-system you can't crank the levels on them to 10 or you'll get digital clipping when the g-system converts the analog signals to the digital stage. signal-to-noise ratio is the main thing you need to manage carefully, but it's doable.
Thanks for your answer back, i will seriously consider this unit. The new limited edition is supposed to have a reworked analog front end. So tone loss is minimized even more.
I use a boost sometimes myself but lately i went back to strait in the amp .
you can do it on the pedal itself. once you have all the effects switched on and set up the way you like, hit the Edit button so that it's lit up, then press and hold the number button for the patch you want to save for a few seconds. everything will start blinking and you can twist the top buttons to name the patch. then hit the Enter button on the lower left and it's saved. this should all be documented in the manual. read that thing from cover to cover.
i have a midi cable connected to the midi-out on the g-system on one end and the midi-in on the framus at the other. when i step on a patch button on the g-system, it switches to whichever channel i need it to on the g-system along with turning on/off whatever effects i have going in the g-system itself. there's a "store" button on the back of the framus that you press once to let it "remember" what channel you want for whatever g-system patch you're on.
yeah it's true. it took me a while to really figure everything out. you have to read the manual all the way through a couple of times, and then read online forums because there are lots of ways to set things up, which means there are lots of ways to screw things up. best to learn from others' mistakes.
Can the G-system also switch the channel on your amp? for example.. Patch 1 is on the clean channel on the amp, and patch 2 is on the high gain channel (without needing other pedals)
correct. i have patches 1-3 on clean (2 has overdrive, 3 has distortion pedal), then patch 4 is crunch channel, and patch 5 is lead channel. all switched via midi in the g-system.
i think you mean if the g-system changes the amp's sound. it can if you want it to. like i use the eq to drop 340 hz a couple of db and boost 2.24 khz a couple of db, for example. also, my global boost switch setting is +4 db. it can't turn up the master volume knob to do that, so instead it attenuates the volume by 4 db with the boost switch off which is most of the time. other than those things, the framus sound comes through like normal.
it did when i was using unbalanced/mono cables longer than 3 feet. you *must* use balanced/stereo cables for the preamp loop if they are longer than 3 feet. the g-system book is pretty adamant about this. of course i ignored it at first only to find that it was definitely true. the sound is noticeably better with balanced/stereo cables.
yes, you change channels and effects with every patch with midi on the amp. the same can be done with the analog foot switch jacks on the g-system as well, but i haven't tried it.
for channel switching I don't see noticeable latency because I'm using the midi output on the g-system to the midi input on the framus cobra. it seems to be a fairly quick signal. as for eq and volume swellings i did notice the same thing and i've basically learned to live with it. nobody notices it but people who play. i leave the eq on as global all the time and the boost switch is set to +4db. overall the g-system suits my needs fairly well.
i know i know, everyone's asking for demos, but when i did my older recordings everyone complained that it sounded like poo because of the pinhole mic on my digital camera. so i need to get a portable audio recorder or a usb interface and software for the e609 mic i have. i'll get to it eventually...
four cable method: g-system insert loop send > corbra input > cobra effects loop send > g-system insert loop return > cobra effects loop return. it is CRITICAL that you use balanced (stereo) instrument cables for the insert loop if they are longer than three feet. if they are shorter than three feet then you can use regular unbalanced (mono) cables. if you follow this rule you'll get a lot of noise and the sound quality will be mush, and you'll get a ton of feedback at high volume.
Hi there great video, I have a framus cobra with mes cab as well. How does it go with the loop? Have you modded it?

I don't get it, how do you program your own user banks. Do you have to plug it into a computer or can you do it on the pedal itself?

yes, it took me a long time to learn that boosted mids matter a lot, not scooped mids. it's the only way to cut through when playing with a band.
