Buongiorno, I am pretty sure this was broadcast in the summer of 1987, not sure if it was June, July, or August. I still remember this vividly cause Jimmy V mentions Little Italy and NY.
Holy shit! He talked about the Big A.C. His son and I play baseball together. I can't believe he a got a shout out, though an embarrassing one, but a shout out nonetheless from Jimmy V. Alan Cotler, the Big A.C. as we call him. Drafted by the Chicago Bulls. What a man.
With Valvano's reference of recruiters "trying everything in Texas", I think you can further add that this was after February 1987, when SMU's football program was given the death penalty.
I am fortunate to say that I was lucky enough to meet Jimmy V at SDF Airport in Louisville when the team came here to play. My friend took our picture, his arm around my waist ( I was in absolute Heaven ) I told JV that he is a brilliant coach and got his autograph, too :) Jimmy did what no one could do and that was out coach every single team they played against. Absolute Brilliance! Rest In Peace Good Man.
Wow! Thanks for having this! God, Jimmy V. was awesome. SO much personality. I have watched Dave for over 20 years, and it is a rare occasion that a GUEST controls the interview. Thanks, again, for putting this video up.
It's too bad NC State University's Genetics department didn't get some DNA so we could have cloned him and won some more ball games by now!!! LOL... the best coach DURING A GAME that ever was. He motivated players to higher heights than anyone else could have dreamed and The NCAA even had to change a rule because of his strategic genius. His whole career was filled with victories over so-called 'superior' teams. He OWNED COACH K and handed Dean Smith more than a few of his most bitter defeats.
David's such a jerk and a horrible interviewer. How he ever got his job is beyond me. On the flip side, Jimmy V is the most charismatic, good hearted, and fun guy ever. RIP Jimmy V, we'll never forget you!
Wow, any douchebag who thinks Jimmy V did anything wrong is retarded. He was CLEARED of everything and he helped more people than anyone in the sport. You cannot say a bad word about him. He's also Italian, so i'm sure pussies felt like he was an asshole at time, but he wasn't.
He wasn't cleared of everything. Why do you think NC St. was put on probation? Oh yeah, that's right, because he followed the rules. I forgot. You're right about one thing. His foundation has helped a lot of sick people. RIP Jimmy V.
It was for the same junk every program in the ACC was doing! LOL... what happened to Jimmy V was, first, he was an enigmatic person. Second, he recruited some players with very poor character. Third, a money-grubbing 'journalist' saw a chance to make money off his fame and, last, NC State's 'owners' did not have the guts to take their own medicine when they could just SCAPEGOAT Jimmy V and ruin the program. LOL... The offenses were free tickets and shoes! LOL... Hmmm, who would OK that?
Spot on commentary. The NCAA chose to make an example of NCSU at that time to discourage other programs. You hear of teams today pulling off MUCH worse with less severe penalties imposed. Quite honestly, the program STILL hasn't recovered.
@mcx99 Actually, he was. Valvano called for the Ncaa investigation and was cleared by them as well. The NCAA did find misconduct by players which landed the program on probation. This is why there was so much disgust with the University over his firing. In the Ncaa report to the NCSU poweres that be, the NCAA acknowledged that in their findings, there was no evidence of any wrong doing by Valvano.
mcx99, who was your coach at your no name team at your community college? STFU you dipshit pole squatter. I hope you enjoy your no name college when they are not on tv next year, the year after that, and ten years in the future.
I will give him this. The Jimmy V foundation has helped out a lot of cancer patients. He made a lot of mistakes as a coach, but Valvano regained his honor in the end.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Valvano's treatment of his own players made me sick. He lied to them over and over again. There were obvious double standards for certain players. He lied to the NCAA. All for what? Wins? Doesn't sound like a nice guy to me.
I will say, his foundation (Jimmy V Foundation) this week did the annual fund raising they do on ESPN every year and put up 100% of the funds raised towards cancer research. I really don't care about who he was 20 years ago any more. Who he was when he died and the foundation that he helped to create is attempting to help. Most don't. Let's remember the good things.
Not saying the entire book was a lie. However, there are many things in that book that are untrue. The biggest thing I'd debate with you is where you said "Turns out Jim Valvano wasn't the great guy everyone thought he was"- Living in the area and having met the man as well, I'd beg to differ.
I see where you're coming from, but I find it hard to believe that the entire book was a lie. There's too many people sharing the same stories about Valvano.
The book was a lie. It had a few strings of truth, but much of what accused Jimmy V of, point shaving, money taken from boosters to give to players, drug tests swept under rug, grades altered, etc. was all a lie. The only things he was guilty of was not graduating a high rate of players and a few kids sold shoes. He should've done things differently a few times, but never did anything wrong.
NCSU was made an example of by the NCAA and Jimmy V was made the scapegoat.
I keep hearing that the book was a lie. Where is your proof that the book wasn't stating the facts? How come there wasn't any books written telling the real story and absolving Valvano? He was a good coach and a great personality for college basketball, but I want the truth.
It is a straight up fact that no evidence was ever found that Coach V took any money, changed any grades, altered any drug tests or anything. He didn't have a good graduation rate and some of his kids sold shoes. I don't know where I can find this online, but it is a very well known fact in North Carolina. NCSU was made an example of by the NCAA and the News and Observer's baseless accusations, coupled with this book made Coach V the scapegoat for a situation not half as bad as some think.
Well, to be exact, it was because of the book and a local paper. There was an investigation held at NCSU & Valvano was CLEARED of any wrong-doing. The investigator even wrote Valvano himself and told him he'd be comfortable with his own child playing for Valvano.
I will post the letter in the next couple of replies for you to read yourself.
Because of the book, Valvano had to resign. So did the President of NC State. NC State was also put on probation. Sounds like the book nailed it on the head. Valvano was so wrapped up in his own ego he didn't care who he hurt.
I just finished reading the book "Personal Fouls". Turns out Jimmy Valvano was not the great guy everyone thought he was. He screwed a lot of young kids over. He also was a disgrace as a coach. Read the book. I'm sure you will agree.
David rarely lets his guests take over his show, but if there's anyone that can do it, Jimmy V :)
