From somewhere around 1955-56? Carlille was one of the first Stratocaster players, although he was often seen with Telecasters and Jaguars. He was a Fender man. These Musicians look so happy don't they? So unlike today.
Thanks for sharing this video. I started a page that presents the text of selected 19th century dance and play songs. I reposted your video under "Little Liza Jane" so that I and other folks could get a sense of how that tune sounds. Google Cocojams American Banjo and Fiddle Songs.
This combo really smokes !! Wow .. I can't quite figure out why I've never come across this band before. Fantastic !! And don't they just love playing ... their enthusiam is wonderful to behold.
Just the second guitar player I've ever seen play like that. Jeff Healey being the first. Being blind, he couldn't have seen this guy. I'll have to look for more of his playing.
@Sithlordljc It would make me feel good to tell a member of Curly Chalkers family how much I enjoyed watching him play pedal steel. His sound was heaven to my ears and his death hurts me like he was a member of my own family.
These guys are ripping it up, smiling, they make it look so easy. They are all top notch. My mother in law made a great observation, the excellent drummer looks just like the comedian Jonathan Winters! : ) Thumbs, the steel guitar player, the drummer, those solos are awesome. Red Foley at the end, man he seems kind of burnt out lol.
Grady isn't in this clip. Grady played guitar in the house band on the Ozark Jubilee. At the end of Red's impromptu vocal performance of "Lil Liza James" he addresses "Grady" who must certainly have been standing in the wings.
I Disagree with DCMemories. He had it right. If you don't believe me look at the video of Grandpa Jones singing it on Youtube. I think they know what they're doing.
good vid w the Man talking too silly ... sooo hot of playing tho !

It's not a pedal steel. Looks like a Fender double-8 or triple-8. Hard to tell from the blur, but there's definitely no pedals on it.

Nope, that is MOST DEFIANTLY Curly Chalker on steel guitar. I should know considering he was my father.

i believe the pedal steel player was speedy west...not curley chalker??
ronshalita 2 years ago
naw - that's definitely Curley. He and Thumbs were a legendary team on OJ. Check out 'Flyin High' to see the difference.
And like Speedy, that's a straight steel - not pedal.

Those old Fender Stringmaster steels sound unbelievable, way more soul than anything made today.

At the very start, how the hell does he play that fast with just his thumb? Was the man human? WOW

Fabulous film editing. Thank you so much! Love the ending statement by Red Foley, "That's all I know of it, Grady."
Red is talking to Grady Martin Guitarist in the house band. God bless them each and every one!

Grady isn't playing in this video clip. However, He must have been on the set as Red addressed him comment to Grady. Grady played in the house band.
There are also recordings of Grady singing "My Window Faces the South with Red." Thrilling stuff, this!

I always thought he was saying 'that's all I know of it, I'm afraid''.
Anyway, check out Grady with the house band on Red's 'Freight Train Boogie' here on this channel...
