''The Dreaded 13 to 22 frets'' on an old hard and brittle vintage ebony fretboard setneck guitar with binding.yup lol seen it
Whats that called on older guitars the top of the fret board curved up and has to be leveled off ,the devils tounge I think?,thats the easy part.with the right bastard tool.
Does that jaw tool smbstressfest is using come with extra changable radius bits?.
When those 22 frets are put in does the neck not curve backward and even so,does the string tension compensate.
Never done anything like this just watching and learning. Thanks for posting it. I have a question though. With the space between your neck and the kig are you not afraid of breaking the neck when putting in the 13th and 14th fret. Just seems like it might be easy to overdo it.
@CodyPaul82 I haven't broken one yet, but I do see your point. It's sort of like driving a car up on plastic ramps and then crawling under it to work on something. At first you're thinking, "will these hold the car up and keep it from falling and crushing me?" But then after you've done it a few times, you stop worrying. Regarding guitar fretwork, pressing in the 22nd "overhang" fret on Fender axes still worries me even though I've never broken anything to date.
Thank you for sharing all these great videos, I've been hammering frets in for years and am thinking of buying the jaws 3 for set neck guitars, just wondered if you have had a chance to try one of those, or your thoughts or comments on that tool. Thanks again for sharing, I wish this stuff would have been around 30 years ago.
@lownslow58 I've never used it but the last few refrets on Les Pauls have me considering it seriously. It's just hard for me to justify spending that kind of money just to put the 13th fret in easier you know LOL.
I probably WILL get one next LP refret though since I like to fret in the neck jig. If i hammered in frets a lot, it would be a tougher choice.
@smbstressfest Thanks for the quick reply, i have started using a neck jig about a year ago and love it for many reasons, Looking at the jaws 3 I thought it would reach up to the 22nd fret with caul on the end of that aluminum block, do you think it would only be useful for the 13th or could it reach up to 22, or am I looking at it wrong. Thanks Again for all your valuable info....
@lownslow58 Oh yeah it will reach all the way up, but i suspect that maybe 13-15 is all I would use it for. Every other fret I could probably put in quicker using other methods. Who knows though, if i get my hands on one of those at some point in the future I'll definitely try to feature it in a video.
I bet you're right! I think in the future if I encounter this I'll probably adjust the guitar a little lower in the neck jig. Just another 3/8" would make the world of difference to be honest.

I bet you could buy a longer bar clamp that you could put that Jaws 2 caul on, for situation like this.
