This is one of the best live versions I have heard of this particular music. But I can't help laughing at the guys who are comparing this to anything being made today. A band like this does not exist in the present incarnation of our world.. and this music holds up to and surpasses anything being made now. So there is no comparison....Give it up because you're just wasting space.
@cubbiefn Why do you kids constantly keep comparing everything to the worst things in popular culture. There's good music back then, and there's good music now, you just have to look for it.
I saw them on this tour.....amazing, but heres a kicker. My 5 yr old was listening to an Ipod and i heard a familiar "beat" the other day while in the car with him... I looked back and asked what are you listening to? he popped out the headphones and said ELP!!! I almost drove off the road, i couldnt believe it. ...i would to take my little boys to see these guys. hinthint KG&C
I got to see ELP in the 70's Keith Emerson had a baby grand that was mounted on an axle they would spin him around and upside down Carl Palmers drum kit was awesome.
I like the way they've rearranged the tune with a new rhythmic arrangement and Keith did some re-orchestration of the keyboard sounds. Great stuff. I still dig EL&P.
Emerson Lake & Palmer was the leading force to bring out the Moog Synthesizer into the world of Rock. Robert Moog confessed in an interview that he worked closely with Keith to promote his new device, and what a device it was. Rick Wakeman was a great keyboardist, but was not as diverse as Keith. I loved Yes, but ELP was King (no pun intended-King Crimson). Keith was a showman while Rick stood stiff with his long robes, but he played well. Keith was a madman on stage. Hats off to both of them
I mean, it is not the ELP of the 70's, of course, but it still sounds damn good. People hate on bands like this as they get older instead of appreciating their brilliance and many contributions to music.
I saw them a few times in the old days. Emerson was undoubtedly one of the best keyboardists ever. Especially live. It was great to see that part when he jumped into the crowd. it bought back so many memories! Yet the crowd was totally dead!
Does anybody have an info on a good quality live concert DVD from their later days. Maybe even this show. Thanks and thanks for the post
First heard the Tarkus album when I was 12 and got hooked. Learned Pictures on my small kit, borrowed Trilogy to copy on a double cassette deck and learned that. One would think by that kind of situation, I'd never get laid until I was 30...by a hooker. But, no. Three years later I was parting hairs. Of course, that was 1990. All the girls had cotton candy down below. I miss it on women these days. That and what it was like to first hear ELP.
Genesis. Yes. ELP...comparing who is best...something THEY never did. They had very different "personalities" as bands and had personal goals in producing their music which really didn't lend to competing for "Best" Progrock band.
They're music is highly personal in nature and so too listener preference.
I have to appreciate the complexity of this music, but then again, I don't like doing anything I HAVE to do. It doesn't take listening to much of this before I start jonesing for the Ramones!
E.L.P were good but too keyboard orientated and always the same keyboard sound ! Genesis are regarded as better because they are more accessable ,easier to listen to Yes are regarded as the best because ,well to be honest ,they are the best . I personally don't think any members of the two former bands could get into Yes .
@Ogumomaru Mate .I have a pretty decent set up here so there is nothing wrong with my speakers. This isn't a personal attack ,just an observation . Genesis too became too keyboard based once Steve Hackett left and if you listen closely ,like ELP ,they have a recognizeable keyboard sound too.
I was and am still a fan of Genesis (pre and post Gabriel), Yes, Pink Floyd, and a few other lesser productive Progressive Rock Bands of the 70s and ELP is by far my favorite. You say it all sounds the same. Well, I beg to differ. Their music is easily more diverse than Genesis or Yes. You have the kick ass songs that are keyboard/synth dominated and then you have the songs that Lake plays acoustic guitar and sings. On their first album, every song is completely different.
When talking about progressive immdiatelly names like Yes and Genesis are hailed as the cream, and ELP seems to be behind, I had always liked ELP more, IMO ELP has always been kind of underated
@8407282 ELP is most definitely underrated! I think a lot of it has to do with bands like Yes & Genesis being more "radio-friendly". Nothing wrong with that, but ELP is too much for many casual music listeners.
@8407282 ELP (I think) was a bit more experimental, taking classical and jazz tunes and adapting them for their 3 piece rock band. Yes and Genesis were a bit more "pop."
I mean no disrespect at all because I was around during the original...but as i look at Greg Lake I keep thinking he looks familiar and all of the sudden I realize he looks like Chaz Bono...sorry but I do love ELP and I mean no offense
Rick van der Linden was the Dutch king of keyboards ... Check him out on Youtube with his band Trace {{{ Trace - King's Bird Live (1978) }}} & {{{ Rick van der Linden / Trace Gaillarde }}}
they play this IN THE DARK. goes to show you that their instruments are an extension of their bodies........ no other way to "perform" such perfection. you either live it or you don't.
The 2 first minutes sounds like Triumvirat. In fact, it's more Triumvirat that sound like ELP because ELP appears first. Musical technics at the best!!!
It's noteworthy that one of the bands Greg Lake was in before ELP was called The GODS, because that's just what Emerson, Lake and Palmer are - GODS.
Am hoping a for another epic STUDIO album - one that pulls out all the stops and needs no apologies to anyone. TARKUS is one timeless EPIC - it's being covered by many different groups, including the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra!! Bravo!!
Saw ELP in 72 in the Cardiff Capitol cinema. Decided to swallow some lethal mustard dot in the pub an hour before(some of you will remember that). I was fine until Keith walked down the aisle firing his mini keyboard like a machine gun. I remember thinking " We are all going to die ". Closely followed by "Fuck this I'm off". I was up the aisle and out of the door in a flash. So thanks to my friend Elaine for persuading me to go back inside. Still think they are a scary band though.
@crusher0792 It's an original Moog Ribbon Controller. Models had the following numbers: 956, 1130, 1150. Emerson had it modified as a pyro launcher, it once burnt his thumb.
ELP demand a lot from their audiences and for those who can live up to the requirements we get tremendous musicianship and original ideas. Each of these artists puts great effort and skill into their music and are truly inspired. There are none like them anywhere. Thanks for all the great music ELP.

4:31 - 5:50 *hangs head in shame and hangs up keyboard for life, especially because all that was probably improvised* Kieth Emerson is frickin AMAZING!!! So is ELP as a band! great music!
I think we all share the same story here. The impact of ELP progressive rock when we felt it for the first time redefined how music could be composed and played, and with only 3 band members.
I was ore struck and instantaneous a slave to their music. ELP send me on a journey searching after other innovative orchestras and forever changing how my perception of music. I think we all should celebrate the fact that we are so much richer than the rest of the inhabitant of this planet.
Only true artists, like this, can reproduce what they recorded note for note on stage and or improve on the same. E.L.P. shall live forever in my heart and soul. They helped me out with many virgin girls as well. Best music in the back seat of a camaro or a firebird.
i´m only 42 and listen to EL&P since I was 4 or 5 because my 10 years older brother played their sound all the time. I know every word and every note from every album - believe me, by god. I started drumming in caus of Carl Palmer, before I played at the first drumset I played on everything I found, even pillows. When I started drumming with a teacher he was surprised what I already learned without a drum. The most important thing was the timing, the perfection. 1

I love EL&P forever and I saw them two times live. Not in the earlier years but in 90on a festival and 92 in cologne. It was blowing me away. They played nearly every note exactly like on the studio records. It was unbelievable. But that is ELP-And when you see Keith destroying and old hammond ,first he played with knife´s and integrated the sound into the songs and then he destroyed the organ completely - you have no more questions :-) 2
Nothing worse than aging rock stars.

What is the "instrument" used by emerson about 7:50??
crusher0792 1 year ago
@crusher0792 A ribbon controller.

Looks like 4 people have absolutely no idea what the definition of awesome music is. It was defined by Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

Such a cool solo of Emerson!

This is like Tarkus, only slower. Emerson gets more of his own notes right though.

i´m only 42 and listen to EL&P since I was 4 or 5 because my 10 years older brother played their sound all the time.
