this makes me feel things i've kept dormant, and i'm alone, listening to him sing and therefore watching him dissect himself before me. his words are torturously private, perverse, awkward and intimate, and when i listen to this song it removes all subjectivity i have about myself. in effect, i belong to it, my perception of myself and my feelings belong to him. because i feel as though these lyrics know me, and hold the profound meaning of my being outside of me, imprisoned in an absence.
If you like them check out Rusty Bandana. They are local but kick so much ass. Very unique but have a radio sound. Comment back if u like. I think they have something.
Wait, what? How the fuck can people enjoy this? It's just the same fucking guitar phrase repeated over and over with weird noises in the background. If I were a historical figure and you dedicated this song to me I'd rise from the dead and fucking devour you.
Why can't people just get over the hipster thing and appreciate good music? How is it better to be defined by what you like (be it obscure or extremely popular) rather than what you do?
Why all this talk about hipsters? Who the hell cares? Aren't we here to listen to some good music? So what if you're hipster? Every generation has its long-lasting fad....like hippies, punks, etc. Now, I think it'd be cool if everyone could shut up about hipsters and just enjoy the music.

We have moved beyond titles and gather in our basements to share mixtapes on our walkmans that we made with garageband on our Mac airs as we smoke American spirits. We all have a real connection between us.
I like anne because she was so cute and intelligent. I would have loved to live on her street back in the 1940s and go to her school. Man, I wonder what it was like to have her as a friend. All I remember from her diary is that she had a very short fuse. If you pissed her off, she would tere you apart. So future time travelers remember, Don't get Anne angry, you won't like her when she's angry
@pchotz94 Any sophisticated musical subculture like metalheads, prog-heads and especially goths and cybergoths are going to have something to listen to that's obscure. I don't know where they get the idea that the hipster is the choice-to-be for such a term when it's arguably one of the most mainstream subcultures today.
They keep telling me i'm hipster and I didn't even put myself together to find out what it means... But it does sound as if I should be flattered, yes?
i love this. i dont think any music should fall into a category based on outward labels and this may sound corny but im a musician myself and music comes from the inside, so to apply a label like that doesn't even make sense. and i hear a huge Bob Dylan influence in NMH's music
it was discovered that Anne Franks so-called diary was written with a ballpoint pen, -MrByronio
...LIAR! I shouldn't give this creep anymore attention, but if you google images of Anne Frank's diary, they are clearly NOT written with a ballpoint pen.
Why judge anybody? Whether they're "hipsters" or otherwise? The fact of the matter is that everybody who made their way to listening to this song is doing just that...ENJOYING this music. If anything, that should unite all the people through a common love of music, and particularly, Neutral Milk Hotel.
It's funny how hipsters contradict themselves so much.
They don't wanna listen to "mainstream" music, and they wanna find something they LIKE to listen to. Once they discover an artist they like, they get pissed when other people (many hipsters, like them) flock to the music they like, and end up not listening to them anymore just because other people like them as well. I don't fucking get it.
To me it sounds like you all just want your own personal artist that NO ONE ELSE can EVER listen to.
Hello everyone, I fucking hate to do this, but I am.
I made a music video for a NMH song (FIND IT ON MY CHANNEL) and I'm really proud of it. I absolutely adore the song "in the aeroplane over the sea" and it represents a considerable positive segment of my life, and it would mean a lot to me if I could get it to 1000 views. If you think I'm being a twat, reply and tell me, whatever. But if you don't mind, go watch it and like this comment so more people watch it! Thank you! LONG LIVE NMH
@MrByronio Because at the death camps, people were forced to do labor and work. After the low number of calories had hit them, or age, they died. Lots of the people who survived were reworded extra rations for doing incredible amounts of work. Just enough to keep them alive though. Im taking this from Morton Ferber, my grandpa, who lived for 9 months in a "Death Camp" but survived by doing slave-work and stealing food.
I just don't believe in the holocaust stories. How does one survive a death camp for 6 years, as so many "survivors" claim? Two weeks with no food or water and you die, why would someone intent on killing you feed, clothe and shelter s many people for so many years?
@MrByronio .... Most were given rations a piece of bread maybe some coffee and soup. It really depends on where they were located as well. As for their clothes they were given basically rags and weren't able to get new rags. Most didn't have any type of shoes. Some peoples will is stronger than others.
@jme19087 Perhaps. But biologically a certain number of calories are, in fact, mathematically required on a daily basis to sustain human life. You can say they were treated poorly (they were in prison, after all) but the fact remains that you do not feed people for years if you would like them to be dead. People may have died of disease, some may have starved (the Allies did destroy every bridge, road and harbor they could) but enough supplies were sent to sustain jews in camps for years.
@Antonomon I'm not insisting on diminishing anything that actually happened. I'm wondering how two mutually exclusive facts can possibly exist: We are told that evil Nazis had death camps and intended to exterminate an entire race of people. But more people survived these camps than died in them. Some survived several "death camps" for 6 years or more. If I have you in my control and want you dead, two weeks without food and water will do the trick nicely. How do you survive a death camp?
@MrByronio If they actually just killed all the Jews instead of keeping them alive who would work for them? They were workers they made different equipment.
@jme19087 So they were work camps, not death camps, right? Did all of the camps make equipment? Which ones used the prisoners for labor? Do you even know? Most of the camps were not, in fact, labor camps, yet the vast majority of the inmates survived the entire war in them. How did that happen if the Nazis wanted them to die? Makes you wonder, huh?
@MrByronio Firstly, please don't try to insult my intelligence on youtube. Secondly you thinking the Nazi's somehow didn't want the Jews is clearly wrong. It's not hard to give them a piece of bread the size of your thumb and some margarine. At a labor camp in Kamionka I believe it's spelled out of 1600 jews 36 lived to see the end. A serious amount of people died in the holocaust.
@jme19087 But hundreds of thousands of jews over the years have claimed to have survived death camps, and have been payed reparations by Germany. Are you not aware of this? I still want to know how one survives a death camp. You are smart to avoid that simple question.
@MrByronio My late Polish father-in-law's best man Zigmund was a survivor of Dachau Concentration Camp (not an extermination like Auchwitz). Well, I say survived, but he was a shell of a man and the German pension went mostly on spirits to cheat the demons. So, go ahead and deny all the other things as well. Apollo moonshots, 9/11 your list is probably as long as your heart is black
@MrByronio And lastly this isn't the video to question politics sir. This is beautiful song. The only comments that should be made on this video is actually about the song. If you want an actual debate go to a blog or something troll.
@jme19087 It is a nice song, perhaps if questioning the holy hoax is to be avoided, one should avoid using pictures of Anne Frank, who is probably living happily in Brooklyn today anyway.
I always thought hipster was another word for a decomposed turtle. Like, you go out to the beach and you're like "awww, there are hipsters everywhere. How did they get here? I've never seen this many!!"
Holy shit! I remember this song having like, hundreds of views, not millions.

I first heard these guys because they were part of the Elephant 6 groups that i liked at the time. (and still do!) NMH are one of my favs. I would love to see these guys play live for sure!
I don't get it. Why is everybody so pissed about NMH becoming somewhat popular? 1000000 views isn't that much at all compared to other music videos. And isn't it a good thing that one of the most incredible bands in history is getting credit for their work?
These sick women, who had just completed a journey of several days in overcrowded railroad cattle cars now had to camp out in tents with no heat, no toilets, no lighting, no beds and only a thin layer of straw covering the bare ground.
Anne Frank and her sister Margot were transferred to Bergen-Belsen from Auschwitz in October 1944 and most likely were housed temporarily in the tent camp.--Scrapbookpages-Bergen Belsen
@DOGOFWAR777 These whiny twelve year olds don't deserve to be called hipsters; that is severely disrespectful to the beat generation and the spirit of the counterculture.
this makes me feel things i've kept dormant, and i'm alone, listening to him sing and therefore watching him dissect himself before me. his words are torturously private, perverse, awkward and intimate, and when i listen to this song it removes all subjectivity i have about myself. in effect, i belong to it, my perception of myself and my feelings belong to him. because i feel as though these lyrics know me, and hold the profound meaning of my being outside of me, imprisoned in an absence.

I don't get it. Why is everybody so pissed about NMH becoming somewhat popular? 1000000 views isn't that much at all compared to other music videos. And isn't it a good thing that one of the most incredible bands in history is getting credit for their work?
TheWizeOwl 3 months ago
I've been listening to them for a couple years now, and this song brings me to the brink of tears no matter how many times I hear it. This is music.

Fuck everyone who has the ego to get angry that amazing bands like this actually have potentially became popular.
