everybody hates america , until they need help, oh then its come america, i say screw them. you hate us, you want to kill us. you figure all your problems out.
If you've never explored the world beyond the McDonald's around the corner from your house, I guess this cry for global socioeconomic justice would sound pretty strange and anti-American.
to all the idiots that think this song means they hate america or americans, you r a bunch of idiots. Its a little more complex than your one way minds.
You know, there's one America and another one Amerika.....one exports guitars, good emotions and feelings while the other one exports bombs and killings through the world. Do you know for example what is the Orange Agent that was used during the Vietnam war?
Anybody know how they did the spotlight bit at 4:01? At the J-Tree show where I first saw this song played (Tampa, FL 12-5-87), it seemed the "throw" the sound where he pointed the light. It's not just a stereo mixing trick on the DVD, it was a real live effect. Blew everybody away, but so did the entire show. Best concert I've ever seen, any band, before or since. Know a guy whose first concert ever was that show--talk about setting the bar high! U2 fan since 6-22-83 on the War tour.
Brilliant performance. Brilliant song. I feel like this is the trajectory The Clash was on towards. Even in Bono's gesticulations and spoken word part bring to mind Joe Strummer at his peek. Good work.
From the day I was born, my parents had U2 playing nonstop. I am 21 years old, living my own life, and I'm finding myself doing the same. The best thing they ever did for me was introduce me to this awesome band.
Define irony: "a preacher (...) stealing money from the sick and the old" well isn't that what Bono is doing nowadays, in the name of Africa? I'm guessing that Bono has become the mirrorball man, the exact type of figure he was making a parody of during the ZooTV tour
I hadnt seen this before. Not only is the sound amazing, but how about that lighting!?! Fuckin magical. Their political songs are not annoying like other artists. Theyre right on point and important. Not sure if bono wrote this song, but whoever did is a genius!!! Agree?
@avzeolla Yeah Bono wrote this song. He was inspired when he visited El Salvador in the mid 80's during the war. I agree about their political songs I think they are trying to make us aware of the things going on around the world. This is one of my favorite U2 songs.
@vodude I can say that for many U2 songs not only for this, live versions are much better than studio versions, but this is only for some songs ,not for all of them!
The lyrics were inspired by Bono's trip to Central America in 1985 as part of Amnesty International. He visited El Salvador, where he stayed with a group of guerillas in the middle of the mountains in the north of the country, which is where he got the idea for this song. "Mothers Of The Disappeared" also came out of that trip. (thanks, Alexis - San Salvador, El Salvador)
Bono´s talk from 4:45 until the end of the song just makes me cry because I´m aware what he means and I guess you do too .."for the rich we´re always forgotten even they need us for to pick all their cotton" .. Here in Sweden people get more and more interested to give Bono the world wide greatest declaration - Nobel Price in Peace.
@stonedc7 ... Yes this is a song about USA, but Bonos work for peace moves all over earth f.ex. small poor countries no one knows or cares about. It´s not only a question about USA. USA ain´t everything, there others too. Nobel Peace also includes hunger, huminity, sickness, nature etc. 5 years ago Al Gore promised to come and help us getting a wood into a nature place. He never showed up. Sorry baby ... I´have to catch another bus ... Bono keeps what he promissed for 100%
@Echnaton1954 You really need to do some research, The US gives more to people in need then the rest of the world combined. And what do we get is spit on! I say we should stop the money for third world countries then they would have a reason to hate us. AL Gore is a douchebag he does not care only for himself, Get that crap out of your system, It has been proven that the US has given more to the blight of starving people that would make the rest of the world spin.

There was no megascreen or big structure... only big hearts and a loud voice. Sometimes I miss this U2, but the times change, the industry changes and we are older. Never was more true, Jacob wrestled the angel and the angel was overcome...
@rko815 Yes, you´re that right. All night through I listened to all the groups life records I´ve got at home. This morning I put The Edge up between my favorite players. Bono said that both him and The Edge always look at notes like they are realy expensive and they always wait to use them until it gets time in the last second. Case closed.
@rko815 You put this the right way: Edge has created his own sound; this song is the living proof that he is an amazing guitarist! One thing I love about the band is that they perform as a whole; you can hear Bono's vocals even in Mullen's drums or in the Edge's guitar riffs and Clayton's basslines.. Watching their live performances in videos is a great inspiration..!
Pure genius... The lyrics, the voice, the distored guitar-sounds (the sound of El Salvador, according to Bono), the thumping bass and the merciless drums of Larry. Everything about this song fits...
The EPIC version of the Bullet The Blue Sky............breathless....I saw U2 4 days ago....Magical.....but i wish i was i that stadium during Rattle And Hum tour.........
I am 37 years old and I remember listening to this song when the Joshua Tree was released 23 years ago. I still listen to it regularly, it still blows me away and it is the sound of four lads making one fcuking collosal noise about the futility and insanity of war. Jesus Christ its the fcuking song to end all songs!
interesting discussion about mixing music and politics.
i just think musicians should make as much music about politics as they like.
though i think it's more like propaganda when political parties hire musicians
to write songs about how wonderfull they are.
but then, should that be forbidden because i happen to dislike the political message ? i'dd say if i had a band i wouldn't stake it's reputation on some politician.
let's just hope it leads to more discussion and thus understanding anyways.
the feeling of that song is awesome, bono and the edge in the solo and in the end, bono and adam claiton..
