I think "Jonny" was responsible for at least 1/3 of the genius that made these films the success that they became. These scores laced within these films are masterpieces; up there with the very greats of classical-music! I only wonder what Beethoven or Mozart would have composed if they had a visual story to mold their work around! Your work hasn’t left me for 25 years and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.
@SuperNickmitch Hi, I think that you have your words wrong. I didn’t work on any of the star wars films. I just love STAR WARS and the Soundtrack to The Empire Strikes Back.
Fantastic. You are indeed a star! This is the BBC Documentary that went out in early May 1980. I have a sound tape made at the time. It really is a superb look at the man, some of his 'back catalogue' and how he works. Well done. Thanks for posting. Takes me back....
Amazing that star wars was about to lose it's contract agreement in 1977. Now, it's 1977 billion people in each country all over the WORLD that love it.
This is incredible. Thanks for sharing this. I love seeing Williams at the piano, performing that brief musical piece from the carbon freeze sequence.
the best music is Rescue from Cloud City / Hyperspace, where Luke gets rescued with the Millenium falcon, he's hanging from the antennae. And when they catch him the best music stars! that driving bass-line towards a climating end
Score-Sheets or midis are nowhere to be found from this track on the whole inet, why?, its a masterpiece :(
I found one of the starwars themes in an old german army movie (original sound track). Don't know how to post the link to this movie, if I paste it here the post shows 'error' but if you search for
'german wehrmacht military parade(1937-2)'
on youtube, you will find it. (maybe someone can help me post the link). The music in this 1937 video starts with one of the themes from starwars. Anyone know the connection to the starwars music?
@stikowsky quote: "Anyone know the connection to the starwars music?"
Yeah, I know: there is none. Well, apart from it being a march. I'm guessing You mean th Force theme (as in "17. The Throne Room And End Title" from the "New Hope"), but the similarity is pure coincidence. It's just one of hundreds of nazi marches written and I don't think John Williams knows a lot of them. Hope I helped ;)
This is seriously the most interesting thing I have discovered here in a long time. I am such a huge fan of Williams, and Star Wars. Thanks for sharing this.
Well, I really liked that. No other Science fiction film allowed the characters to settle down and find their footing. I really want to see somebody write a movie like that again.
I don't know if this is the best one or not? I surely like the music for the later Star Wars movies. Phatom Menace-the music is totally awesome. Regardless of which movie it is, JW's music is amazing.
They all had great music, of course. I think Attack of the Clones has the best music of the series, at least it has some of my favorite musical parts of the series.
@DuckwalkSupreme: I have to wholeheartedly disagree. The nuance in the original score is at a whole different level, compositionally—the pitch collections are much more varied and subtle, the timbres are more exciting, each film is cued better. The new films sound like they were thrown together in five minutes. In fact, I've always been convinced that Williams, in a deliberate move to show secret distaste for the New Trilogy, deliberately wrote more derivative material!
@TheRealmsOfGold Revenge of the Sith has a fantastic score, as well as certain segments of the other two originals. I think it fits the film very well and conveys the emotions we see in the original trilogy.
This is one of the most informative documentaries I have ever seen, a pleasure to watch. You have my gratitude for posting this (even though it is annoyingly in PAL speed).
@greenemerald1 Lucas said himsel that without John Williams, the film would not have been sucessful.
We cannot see the film without music, it would be dead, but we can hear the music without images. After all, there is no differences between composing for a prince, or composing for a movie director.

You can hear how the romantic theme from 'Empire' fits right between his work on 1977 on 'Close Encounters' and 'Star Wars' and 1981's 'Raiders'.
'Empire' had an evemn more powerful score than 'Star Wars'. 'Return' was a weaker movie in all respects.
MadHighway 2 months ago
@MadHighway Disagree there. "Return" had by the finest score of the original trilogy. Truly haunting.

@stikowsky It's an arrangement of Siegfried's theme from Wagner's Ring der Nibelungen. Similar opening phrase but nowhere near plagiarism.
