Listening to Tatum there one can really here the connections from Hines and Waller and what would lead to the two later greats Erroll Garner And Oscar. Art seems to have been a crucial step in between-oh we better not forget Bud Powell as well.
I've a hudge respect for Art Tatum. And I understand why some people compare him with Oscar Peterson. But I love Oscar's music, not Tatum's. The 2 musics are very different.
the most influential piano/musician. Jazz, classical and everything in between. Everyone secretly takes from him one way or another. Its like Tatum was alien craft that crashed to earth. All we have to do is take it apart, analyze it and then replicate or create variations. He did all the work. Lets put it this way, Einstein is the Tatum of physics !
yes youtube is good. Oscar and Art were the same. i tried to listen for a difference and there is none, unless you go fast enough for it to become a dog whistle in order for me to not be able to hear it.
@dfranklin70. I agree. I would watch Mister Rogers just to hear the theme song. On one of the segments, John Costas, played some chords that was just crazy. Then sometimes he would be playing softly when Mister Rogers was talking, i would be at awe in how he was playing. So smooth. What a muscian.
anybody know what's happening technically with the sound on Oscar's part ... is it out of phase or something? Just curious he still sounds incredible. Isn't as noticeable to me on Art Tatum's part.
When I listen to Art Tatum I have the feeling that the melodies that appeal to a musical layman like me bore him. The true test of an musician is what other musicians say about you, and for Art Tatum I hear nothing but praise.
what the fuck does dirty harry know about this shit, if i sat down at a piano with ray charles and tried to talk about jazz history my fuckin mouth would shut on its own...................
@vetmusician Clint has been a fan of jazz throughout his life. He hoped to pursue music after high school , but has composed several film scores for some of his films. He directed 'Bird' (1988) about Charlie Parker, plus directed 'Piano Blues', from Martin Scorsese's "The Blues", with a variety of his favorite blues and jazz pianists (that were still alive). Does any of this make him an authority? No, but you're confusing his personal interests with the characters he portrays.
@vetmusician I'm surprised to read your comment. You are unaware of Clint Eastwood's affection for and his affinity for jazz music and jazz musicians. He knows a lot more than you realize.
@tipofelice the gentleman sitting NEXT to him knows alot more than i realize, the OTHER guy............is just a fan...........albeit, an educated one, but a fan nontheless....................
"Sometimes he would be drinking a beer and it would only be his left hand, and you would never know the difference." Oh man Ray, you just made my day!
Comparisons seem pointless but are inevitable since we're humans and we do that. So, as long as we're comparing, how about throwing Hiromi Uehara in there and watching her 'The Tom and Jerry Show,' also on here...
OF Course Peterson is...absolutely astounding..! But Tatum is beyond explanation ...either you hear it or you don't and if you don't...close the book..the story is over!
@pinkieldred Well I didn't at first but then I did because I built an appreciation out of practising jazz piano and then I came to realise how unique art tatum is in such a way that you can't believe that its not computer generated somehow and that its just his fingers. Its all practise though for instance the best female chess players are sisters and they where set up to practise chess as a little something to prove practise. Oscar had practised ultimately less than Art.
Comparing Art Tatum to Oscar Peterson is like comparing Hashem to Allah. They are the same thing, and you can only understand that part of either that your limited senses can perceive. To understand where they're coming from, you have to understand where they've been, and to to that you'd have to have lived their lives. Impossible. Just listen and enjoy, and be thankful that they both lived in a time where their feats could be documented, unlike, the men who taught them to play and are forgot.
I agree with rooso8824. Oscar was the best piano player that ever lived. And people think Elton John is a REAL pianist? A piano player yes, but pianist NOT!
Garner and Tatum display their genius in other ways. Neither of them seemed to have any difficulty with keys. Tatum is playing the piece we're hearing in Db. Thats not the easiest of keys for piano. Garner played Misty in Ab originally but I've heard him playing stuff in the key of B. The big difference between Oscar and Art is that Art did it first, both technically and harmonically. Oscar of course took it to a new level but his roots were always in Tatum's style.
Blacks on pianos.the notes and the players.....both so important in music..the whites on pianos......the foundation notes and the creators..........I love them both
Same with me,I like oscar better.Tatum is a freak,he was technically brilliant some say to many notes and effortless in his playing.I have the complete pablo Tatum group masterpieces, love the solo playing. But Oscar has that space and magic.Joy Spring Played July 7th 1957 live at Newport (Rhode Island) Jazz Festival with Herb Ellis and Ray Brown will always knock my socks off
I've always liked Oscar better. He could play at lightning speed one song and then follow it with a ballad to make you cry.
While it's amazing to watch Tatum's, whenever I've listened to his Cd's I've gotten burnt out on his pure speed. I guess I just like variety and it seems like Oscar could do it all. Maybe Art could too and I just never heard it.
@roos08824 I've often heard that Art's left hand was simply the fastest. Ever. They're both fantastic in different ways, but i always dug Art's ability to reharmonise stuff. Then again that is just my opinion!
@roos08824 "my God man, when you just sit back and listen to Art Tatum, you just don' believe what you hear...." Ray Charles, from this clip. So keep listenin' lil brother, you'll get it one day....
@roos08824 It's really objective because each could do things the other couldn't. Peterson had a much wider tempo and dynamic range and definitely swung harder than just about any other jazz pianist. Peterson also could get any sonority he wanted out of the piano just as the best concert pianists could. I think it's undeniable that Peterson had nowhere near Art Tatum's harmonic sense. Basically Peterson's interest was the piano while Tatums was the music.
As a pianist myself, I have noticed that although fantastic Art Tatum played PIECES, which he carefully did arrangements. If you listen to him playing a song is almost identical to any of his renditions of the same music. They have the same form, chords and all.
He had an ouststanding memory, and could memorize all his renditions.

Tatum's right hand had the pyrotechnics, but the left hand was a miracle of invention - plus everything else the right hand had ;-)

@jckea Yes, she deserves to be mentioned as an example of a pianist not in Art Tatum's or Oscar Peterson's league.
