I had nightmares from this one scene for weeks after I saw ST:TMP in 1979. How this scene alone didn't result in a PG rating for the movie I'll never understand.
According to the original treatment of the script, the woman who dies in the transporter was Kirk's lover... Which is why Kirk is so disturbed by it. The early parts of the film on the Enterprise after I learnt that made a lot more sense.
What they need to do is have the same engineers who designed the atrificial gravity system for their ships, design EVERYTHING. I mean no matter what, the ships gravity system never fails. Heck the ship can be nearly destroyed and abandoned for 50 years, guess what still works? The gravity system.
Strange how they never used this type of situation for a plot device, like some kind of murder mystery episode or something
