  • does this work with Drop G if your in drop A to start with? I have 4 springs in the back at the moment due to how low it is, does this affect the way i would tune it down?

  • I just ended up taking the bolty things at the top off completely

  • you had me at "hey boys and girls"

  • when i put the locking nut back together i got put back into E

  • What it be really bad if I skip the step of securing the bridge and screwing the cavity screws if im dropping my low e to d?

  • Springs*

  • I use 10-52 gauge strings, and I do everything according to your videos, but my bridge will not get leveled and I even tried moving the spings in the back around. What should I do?

  • Can anyone help me? This is rlly confusing -.- I tuned my guitar to drop c but it sounds like its hitting the fretboard and it comes out of tune rlly quickly. Someone help please! Dx

  • @Death4TheDaysLeft get higher gauges string, 11s or 12s may be perfect.

  • so wait, someone please confirm, can you not just turn the peg on the lower e to d?

  • @CDawkinz yeh that can be realy bad for the floyd rose, and your guitar. i know, floyd roses are a bitch

  • i cant belive this is the right way

  • thank you very much lmsjr

  • i have a problem when i tune my guitar, for example, if i tune de 6th string to D and then tune one by one the higher strings, when i come back to the 6th string, it is in another tuning (more often is F or higher than it should be) despite the fact that i place an object to maintain the bridge in position... can someone help with this???

  • @mehlliont yeah, that happens.. you have to tune it 5-6 times.. it's very tiring, but that's how it's gotta be done..

  • @RITWIK293 ohh so is it normal???

  • @mehlliont yep..

  • Just because it's in tune that doesn't mean it's properly setup, you also have to make sure the bridge is parallel to the body.

  • fuck thats effort to tune a floyd ¬¬ imma stick to fixed or string through's

  • screw it i'm buying an sg robot guitar

  • DIMABAG GUITAR

  • what if i need to go back up higher? like from D to standard?

  • I swear... I loved Floyd Roses till I joined a band that plays drop tunings... Now I'm probably just going to go out and get a fixed bridge guitar.

What would happen if I down tuned to Eb with the fine tuners...? Would it affect the bridge enough to make it unplayable or sound like ass...? I was thinking about playing everything one fret lower... But it doesn't seem practical... ...or does it...? Does anyone just do that instead...?

  • @midknightbluez

I could really use some advice on this. If anyone is willing to help me figure out what the best idea is for my situation, I'd appreciate it. Songs i'm playing are in E, Eb, and Drop C. I have two guitars, both with Floyd Rose trems.

  • @midknightbluez Tune one guitar to standard E and other to DADGBE-drop d, Then do what i do use a morpheus droptune pedal. Our bunch tunes to the key every song was written in so that thing makes it a BREEEEEEEEEEEEEZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I have a question. Do you have to reset the intonation when you drop tune like this...?

  • Do I also do this if I want to go to Drop D?

  • @LightDark82 you can tune into drop d from standard you dont have to drop anything.

  • @Codyp1814

Isn't that down a whole step...? Won't that affect the bridge being parallel...?

  • @midknightbluez

Oh, my bad you were talking about the advantages of fixed bridges I'm guessing.

  • @midknightbluez if you are just dropping the low E string to D it doesnt really make a difference.

  • and drop d?

  • why do yo u call the tremolo arm "the floyd"

  • All this just to drop tune a guitar!?

  • THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT EXPLAINS SOOOOO MUCH!!!!!

  • Is it true that once you tune one of these it stays in tune for a really long time??

  • @Bikerider914

Yeah provided the temp and humidity around the guitar strays pretty constant. I don't recommend buying a guitar with a Floyd though, they are cool for a while but I find them to be more of a pain in the ass then they are worth.

  • @Bikerider914 that's the main advantage of a floyd rose. that and the tremlo/whammy bar

  • @Bikerider914 yes never goes out

  • you are the fucking best man finally i understand how to freaking tune a floyd you rock thanks man

  • DUDE YOUR A FUCKING GENIOUS

  • Hey so what do I do when I wanna tune my guitar Drop C, Drop D, etc.?

  • DUDE your Amazing. Thankyou sooo much. now i can play ABR without sounding like shit. lol.

  • Comment removed

  • @60millionaire i didn't watch the whole vid before comenting :L

    but thx!!!!

  • Dean From Hell :D

  • well... I'm getting a guitar with a floyd for Christmas, I play in Eb Db and B :/ I'll get a cheap squier or something for drop tuning...

  • That settles it, I'm not gonna by a guitar with a Floyd Rose. It's too much trouble for me.

  • thank you so much man!

  • Heavy gauge strings....7 string....Drop G#... I think ill take it to the music store so i dont fuck it up

  • What if your only dropping the E string?

  • @Gameboss244 You can just loosen the lock and drop it from the tuners on the head. This shouldn't put your other strings out of wack so much as to your fine tuners can't handle it.

  • i have .11 .48 strings and its a pain in the ass but thanks to this video it made it SO MUCH EASIER!!!!!!!!

  • If Im Changing from gauge 9-42 to 11-50 on a floyd rose, is it the same procesdure as changing strings to the same gauge? I understandthere will be more tention so how many SPRINGS should I use and the order... PLEASE HELP :(((

  • Comment removed

  • Is it possible if this process is not done right that it could screw up the intonation of the guitar??

  • what size strings are you using?

  • This seems like so much more work then its worth. :/

  • @Ryanxx18 bud, after u did this 5 times u know every step in sleep. it will take 2 mins ;)

  • You are the man. Thanks so much

  • Surely you need to check and adjust the intonation for such a different tuning?!

  • i am not buying a floyd rose guitar after watching this video. i drop tunes to c, c# ,b,d, all the time

  • could i attach sausages to the back to act as springs?... :P

  • Very interesting, I have never tried the tune from the back technique on my Dean From Hell. Eager to try it next time I need to change tunings. Fantastic video, no nonsense. Favorited.

  • So Simple But So Useful !!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU FOR THIS VID !!! ROCK ON

P.S. I KOW PEOPLE WHO PAID 50€ TO GET A FLOYD DROP-B TUNED...

  • You want a Drop D Floyd Rose?! Wouldn't it be easier just to get an EVH Drop D Tuna peice... lol

  • @AssassinSteven Actually not. In order for the D-Tuna to work, your Floyd Rose needs to be blocked, as in it doesn't pull up (Dime style). Eddie doesn't need to pull up, just do dive bombs, so that works for him.

  • This helped a lot!! thanks

  • I'm trying to tune my guitar to Drop B but my floyd keeps raising and everytime i tune them up it dips in further. Does anyone know how to help me out here??

  • @AccaDaccaFanNo1 you have to adjust the springs in the back of the guitar. You have to balance the pull of the strings with the pull of the springs and after trial and error, you can make the floyd parallel to the body :) it might take some time though, but once youve done it, you wont have to change it again

  • @alexharringtonmusic Thanks :) I tried that the first time though and nothing changed :( i think 12 gauge strings might be too heavy for drop B in the first place :P

  • Will this tut work on a George Lynch Serpent 600 ?

Also how would you go lower ... like to drop b or c ?

  • @zMirrororriMz

K SO: RULE: pitching fwd tighten "spring claw". pitching back? loosen claw.

    so my answer is:

    1. TUNE to what ever tuning you want. (protip: block ur bridge in neutral position with the thinnest (rigid) material u can find by sliding it between the body and the bridge.)

    2. LOCK the neck (remove protip)

    3. APPLY RULE

    4. REPEAT untill RULE no longer applies and your in tune.

IF your still having problems going lower, up your string gauges, use 10-46 or 11-52 (lower than A)

  • @zMirrororriMz I'd imagine the same process, just more dramatic.

  • Wow, when I tune mine I do is ALOT more simple than that, but this method is ALOT better than mine! I am going to use this from now on! Thank you! I am glad I subbed!

  • I've never tuned it that way before, seams a bit quicker than the standard way, Did you keep the bridge level (flat with the body) too because i would assume that's the key to making this technique work.

  • @kingdarko I'm also curious if the bridge was perfectly flat with the body and if the intonation was perfect.

  • "How to DROP TUNE a Floyd Rose Trem System."

If it takes 9 minutes, I don't need a Floyd Rose.

  • Im curious why do you refer to the whammy (tremolo bar) bar as the floyd?

  • @guitaristguy20

Because the tremolo bar is called a Floyd Rose. Its not like any other tremolo's out there.

  • Holy crab men... you are the best... thank you!!!

  • THANK YOU MAN!

  • dude you look like patton oswalt.

  • The simple fact that this video is over 9min. long is a big part of the reason why I play a Les Paul...

  • @revolutionday1 les pauls come with floyds too you know.

  • @kingdarko Yes, but not MINE baybee! I'm Tune-O-Matic w/ graphite saddles all-day, son!

  • I think to tune to standard and then the fine tuners on bridge to drop, it's not perfect but it's probably cause my floyd is a licensed one. It's bloody handy though, really quick and easy.

  • @rgjmce666 That won't work you'll knock the rest of the strings out of tune also. If you want to just drop the one string then get an EVH detuna

  • @kingdarko I didn't say it was perfect but it is a nice cheap alternative to the evh system

  • Can someone explain to me why I can't simply unlock the nut, drop my e string, lock the nut back up and fine tune it? I play in drop D, and I'm looking to get a guitar with a floyd rose, I just want to make sure I know what I'm doing. It would almost permenently be in drop D. Please reply.

  • @ChogRocker I think you will be just find if you do that I dont own one yet but I will in a couple days. I'll try to get back with you and let you know how that goes.

  • @zzzhuh Apparently if you do that the bridge won't be level anymore, so you have to suspend the bridge, tune as normal, and take the suspension off. If the bridge isn't level then its a case of opening the back and pissing around with the screws, I think.

  • So Tone King, I have a slight problem.... I have a Washburn Dimebag Darrell model, basically the same as your Dean from Hell, and I was wondering...If you were to put a EVH D-Tuna on the floyd system, would it work correctly?? I tune to Eb or 1/2 step down, and my band wanted to start writing some songs in drop C#..and its a problem with the whole Floyd system.

  • @jedijosh5 it depends on your floyed rose. if it rests on the body of the guitar (you can only do dive bombs) it will work, if it´s floating it won´t work. as soon as you drop your Eb string all the other stings will go out of tune (like with a sting breaking) because the tension on the stings won´t match with the spring tension that holds your floyed in a floating position.

  • this is an exact copy of the video "floyd rose setup in 2 minutes"

  • another good way to keep the same settings (of a regular tuning) on a lower tuning is to use a heavier gague strings so you get a similar tension at a lower tuning ;) I use 10/52 strings for open B tuning and the settings of the Floyd Rose are about the same of a regular tuning with 10/46 strings

  • TTK. I don't see how you how your method can garantee that the Floyd bridge remains paralell to the body after detuning. You may loose up-bending capability or ending up with the bridge highly angled.

  • you have the most wonderful toys!!...do you own a shop or somehting,,,

thanks tone king love all yer vids,,,best on utube

  • To secure my floyd rose bridges, I use a cork cut to the correct hight. Simple, cheap and always available, because one cork lasts a life time. :P

  • good video. Either this or buying a termal-no will work. Termal-no can turn the bridge into a hard tail. I have one on my floyd rose kh-202 guitar and it works awesome.

  • Thanks Tone, Ive been waiting for a good video on this, and even better that it came from you. Talk to ya next Friday. Baolu222

  • So that doesnt hurt anything on the guitar?

  • I have another question, i have shecter hellraiser 7-string. it has a floyd rose, how do you tune that? Would it be the same as tuning a 6-string?

  • Thank you tk! because of your previous videos i can tune and set up a floyd, and now i just dropped tuned mine and it worked! thanks TK!!

  • @Mo7Vsta EXCELLENT! Glad I was able to help !!

  • @lmsjr im new at this i just got my first floyd rose and i was wondering what do you mean always tune up like from the 1 string up?

  • does that guitar stay in tune?

  • Best tut on youtube man !

  • @LiK3aMONK3Y Thank you LiK3 !!

  • Truth Hawg!

  • Has YouTube done something to their site? All my Subscriptions have all been messed up. Just wondering. Do you keep your Strat style guitars with the Trem systems intact or do you convert them to a Hardtail with a wood block in the cavity? I saw a video by Chappers a while ago and he shoed how to do this if you don't use your Tremolo much. I guess people use a certain guitar for Drop Tuning and keep it that way, looks like a pain in the butt. Lot harder than dropping my Les Paul to Drop D. LOL

  • I've watched a lot of videos, read plenty of articles and yet cannot understand the part where you have to adjust the spring tension. I'll probably stay away from the Floyd Rose until i REALLY need it, which won't be anytime soon.

  • Why do you think I have a buzz going on in every one of my floyd rose guitars?

  • interesting..

  • The only problem I see with that way you're doing it is I'm not sure if you're making sure the bridge staying level. Maybe you are but I can't tell. I like to adjust the springs while the lock nuts are loosened. And I dont secure the bridge. I adjust the springs and tune from the neck until I'm at the right pitch and make sure the bridge stays level at the same time. Then after that tighten the lock nut and fine tune.

  • I have 6 guitars with Floyds and don't have this much trouble drop tuning them. I don't even block the bridge when do it I just know how much to adjust tighten/losen the springs. But good video for people without the experience. \m/

  • i dont have a fr. but when i get a guitar with one, ill now know how to go to drop c.. Thanks man

  • excellent and well done in the most easy way for every one to understand how to drop tune a floyd rose. Mark from Las Vegas.

  • two words

    morpheus droptune

  • lol for the past year Ive been taking an hour or two doing this, and ttk did it in 10 minutes...

  • Hi TTK, I always had doubts in regards to STEP 6. When you tighten locking nuts and tune from the back. Won't this hurt your strings very badly? Ain't we suppose to NEVER TUNE after locking? Great informative video nevertheless. Love your editing, straight to the point and no time wasting parts.

  • @ReXShunji never tune after locking? what do you think the fine tuners are for?

  • @TheSammyreynolds Quite obviously i wasn't referring to the fine tuners.

  • Watching this make me appreciate my Ibanez S520 with ZR bridge and realize how much light years ahead time it actually is. Stability and ease of use and definitely no screwdrivers! But anyway, good review! For the same matters anyone interested can check out FruduaTV channel where Galeazzo also explains Floyd tuning! Good luck!

  • @incantatis your not going to hurt your strings. that's how ever tech i've known does it.

  • i hav old trading cards i might use. How many would i need?

  • There doesnt need to be such a method to the madness, just drop tune it and back the screws out in the back until its were you want it

  • @bamf6396 screw in*(not back out)

  • You rule ttk

  • got a long enough screw driver there man. lol. ive used this method for years and it works. u rule tone king

  • wow! all this time ive been doing it the hard way. im going to try this method next time! thanks TTK!!!!!

  • Great video! I have an Ibanez S series with the ZR Trem (the ball bearing pivot) and on the back, there is this enourmous nut to adjust spring tension. I used your method, modified for a non-Floyd guitar, and it worked like a champ. Here is something to save your subscribers a lot of headache. MAKE SURE YOUR STRINGS HAVE BEEN STRETCHED!. Trying to tune a Floyd with new strings will drive you nuts. A tip: tune each string a note above standard. It will strech them nicely.

  • @HEADBANGBALLER Agreed on stretching the strings. That is clearly outlined in my How to Tune a FR video (link in this video).

  • a VERY neat device called "tremol-no" attached between the tremblock and springclaw lets you lock the tremolo and drop tune as u would on a hardtail!

    Highly recommended!!

  • You could also use a morpheus droptune pedal. It will not have as good a tone but it's miles less hassle.

  • is that a korg pitchblack tuner? how is the tuner, because I need a stomp pedal tuner.

  • @rk28984 It's alright, but it's not really true-bypass like it claims to be. Invest in the TC electron Polytune.

  • @sartaajhussain the TC electron Polytune has no DC out....and I´d like that feature for powering my other pedals

  • @rk28984 I like this tuner b/c I can see it from a distance :-)

  • very nice thanks

  • TTK: Tune it with Natural Harmonic at the 12th fret. Its more accurate.

  • Can't this leave issues with the trem angle in relation to the body?

I'm just wondering how do you ensure that when you bring it to pitch with the spring nuts the bridge doesn't come up or down from alignment with the body, since the tuning was done when the bridge was secured?

  • @Mrav79 when the bridge is in alignment with the body (while it´s secured) and you tune it the way TTK shows (first headstock tuners, than lock the strings....) you wont have a problem tuning it with the screws afterwards.

  • @rk28984 Yes but will the trem sit flush with the body, that's the question and how you ensure that.

  • @Mrav79 I always do it the TTK way and it works just fine for me....I always have to readjust the bridge a little bit with the screws (climate changes, transporting the guitar.....) if I want the floyed to sit perfect but after a while and with some experience thats a piece of cake

  • @rk28984 Thx rk! Glad to know you use my method and it works for ya! Rock on !!

  • we need more of these DIYs :)

  • I do it slightly different.. But that's just how I learned.

  • @AbsentProductions How do you do it ?

  • @lmsjr could you do a vid on tuning higher a floyd? im having serious problems :(

  • @AlexM1175 you have to do exactly the same thing as tuning a floyed down.....this video only shows how you change your tuning with a floyed.

block the bridge (if you want to tune higher you will have to tighten the screws before the next step), unlock the strings, tune the guitar, lock the strings, unblock the floyed.....and than "adjust" the tuning with the screws.

  • @rk28984 thanks for the reply, but when i take out watever is holding the bridge in place would the strings not snap ?

  • @AlexM1175 only one time one of my strings broke because of this.....to avoid that you just loosen the screws so that the block that secures your bridge comes out easy, after that you tune your guitar with the screws....maybe you will need an extra spring because of higher string tension in the new (higher) tuning and if you use new strings please stretch them out before you tune the guitar (like TTK showed in the floyed rose setup video)

  • @rk28984 thanks a million for the reply really helped

  • @AlexM1175 no problem, I´m happy it helped you

  • @lmsjr It would be incredibly difficult to explain through text, but as I said it is only SLIGHTLY different. This guide is fantastic though, I am going to try this method next time I have to do a full set-up on my Agile. Could possibly be easier! Thanks TK.

  • Just for the sake of being thorough, shouldn't there be a mention about when to lock the nut. I would do it after tuning from the back and before tuning with the fine tuners.

  • @Zhaggysfaction That was outlined in Step 6.

  • @lmsjr

Oh yeah... Sorry , didn't see that. Awesome video!

  • tuning to to the pick strike and not the resonating tone. good man.

  • @johnosstreeter Agreed - and good observation. You always want to tune how you pick the guitar. More of a reason for you to set it up yourself!! If you have a shop do it - he may pick ilghtly - then when you play - it may be off. Good call & good catch!

  • Could you please the same with a kahler trem please tone king.

  • awesome info, my friend!

  • @tony93666 Thx Tony!!

  • @lmsjr I have to say that the pitch of a floyd rose also depends on the angle of the guitar with the horizon/floor . I mean it has to be the same when you tune the guitar and when you play the guitar. hope this helps you. keep on the good vids!

  • Lou you Rock ! keep on rockin' thanks for your videos !

  • @evander5150 Thx evander!
