@LakeShaman 80% non believers? ... United States has the highest number of Christians for a 1st world country - especially compared to Europe and Canada. Here about 10-15% are atheist, and over there it's higher to 20-30%! Check out Texas and the 'bible belt' where a law was passed so that you have to be Christian to take any state office, or no alcohol can be sold on Sunday, since it's God's day. Gambling is outlawed because it's sinful.
@patrickledford420 If so that is against Article Six of the United States Constitution, making it an illegal statute. "forbids a religious test as a requirement for holding a governmental position and holds the United States under the Constitution"
A good lecture all in all, but I don't agree entirely with him on the point about the US being the only country founded on secular principles. Sweden's constitution may not have the same wording, but we're 85% non-believers and it shows in the way things work; especially now since we've abolished state religion and dropping out of the old state church is a matter of checking a box and putting the paper in a mailbox.

He only spouts this crap to get back at his brother Peter, who is totally opposite to him on everything.
Atheists need disciples, like any other sect.
If they truly think there is no God, why do they bother about it?? Just get on with living and stop boring the arse of the rest of us who are prepared to live and let live.
Atheists are becoming more vocal because the religious are becoming more vocal about getting creationist myths taught in public school science classes, passing civic policy that's based on religion, and trying to break down the wall of separation between church and state. Most atheists are fine with people believing whatever they want, just don't try to force everyone else to live by it or believe it.
I'm more vocal because of the issue Hitchens talks about in part 4 of this series. I refer to the matter of christians who support the jewish state because they would like to see the fulfillment of their end times prophesy. If not for the collapse of the financial system in Sep 08, we would today have such a person holding the office of Vice President of the United States. That is an extremely disquieting fact, one that compels me to speak out against theism.
Not when theres is plenty of theistic people out there poisoning peoples minds with their mystical bullshit. Thats why my friend, I paraphrased from Christopher Hitchens actually response to that exact question. Atheism is not a sect, for numerous reasons and you expose your ignorance of what atheism really is by saying that.
I have a feeling that Hitch may prefer to think of it as his forehead becoming too pale and matted if he hasn't had an occasional shot of a good single malt.
But seriously, those endless imploring religious appeals for belief in yet another convolution of easily refutable arguments requites a stiff one now and again. It's like; ok, let's hear it, as yet another person asks, 'What if Santa was skinny enough to get down the chimney? .. he must be real!'
Hey marsCubed: "'What if Santa was skinny enough to get down the chimney? .. he must be real!'" Mate, that's one of the funniest and most succinct and astute satires of theology I've ever heard and i'm totally using it at the next opportunity!
Judging from the end of part 4 to the beginning of part 5 what we see here is either a collection of thoughts or a decision to upon finishing a thought and accidentially behaving as what appears to be a praying stance a hold on that behavior for the express purpose of getting the audience to listen carefully to this next point.
Shall we assume spiritual knowledge due to an outward appearance which is what is done when the 9/11 towers fall to find comfort?
In Milton's "Paradise Lost", the Devil actually has very cogent and intelligent arguments against God's 'plan' and especially aginst the concept of 'original sin'.
I've never heard them put more logically, and certainly never heard an inelligent answer to them from any Believer. All Christians should read it and ask themselves the questions asked by Satan. What would be their answer?
You should read Jose Saramago's The Gospel According to Jesus Christ. One of the best chapters of the novel is a brilliant conversation between Jesus, God and the Devil around God's plan; but unlike Milton, Saramago doesn't redeem the Judeo-Christian god.
I don't know whether you've read it or not, but another excellent Saramago novel is 'Blindness'. If not, then you should, it's terrific, and if you have you should also give 'The Plague' by Albert Camus a spin.
The Turkish revolution is still standing too, barely though, sadly... But the revolution led by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk needs to be uphold in Türkiye! The secular republic of Türkiye needs to be protected at all cost. So Mr. Hitchens forget to mention this.
I spent a lot of time in Turkey and in the neighboring Arab countries. Turkey is like a candle of sanity in a region of ignorance and superstition. I don't think any other leader besides Ataturk could have led Turkey out of society based on myths and nonsense to the sane secular state it is today. It is too bad--because the middle east needs more Ataturks.
Hitchens is wrong about the other nations constitutions.

This is the only way to do it, if you start to kill religious people, you make martyrs, and thus you increase the amount of believers by making yourself the evil. Hitchens has the right idea on how to get rid of religion. I am not his supporter, I only share knowledge....
Religion also means people (believers). What are you going to do with these people? Put them in concentration camps? Organize mass-executions? Atheists have much experience in such matters, don't they?
Umm, what? I'd agree with that poster that religion should be "destroyed", although that may be confusing wording. I also think that racism, flat-earth-ism, creationism, and all whacky UFO cults should be destroyed. It's the IDEAS which should be destroyed through ARGUMENT and LOGIC. You might (obviously) disagree with that, but it has nothing to do with the PEOPLE.. especially KILLING people.. that's something which can only be excused (ironically) with unquestioned dogma.
Not really. Hitler was a Roman Catholic and his cohorts in the Holocaust included the Archbishop of Vienna. There is nothing inherent in atheism which could be used to encourage such behaviour. By contrast Hitler often refered to Jews as "Christ-Killers". But I guess you wouldn't know that gathering your information from duplicitous charlatans who repeatedly and knowingly lie about Hitler's personal beliefs.

The clown asks "why is no one laughing?" Get the mirror, and learn the answer, as to who/m the clown is performing for; for attention. Get an identity, and you'll discover you've a life as well.
Yeah, the Postmodern Essay Generator is brilliant isn't it? Let me have a go:
""Class is part of the paradigm of sexuality," says Debord; however, according to Abian, it is not so much class that is part of the paradigm of sexuality, but rather the absurdity, and hence the futility, of class. Therefore, the subject is contextualised into a that includes reality as a whole."
Whatever the fuck that means. I'm glad you find such language as amusing as I do.
ditto, but that's about the only thing we can be proud of America for, at the moment; after all being "under god" has done so much for our countries "respect" of human life in the world. That is to say, mostly nothing relative what so ever.
That Paradise Lost quote in full: The mind is its own place, and in it self Can make a Heav'n of Hell, a Hell of Heav'n. What matter where, if I be still the same, And what I should be, all but less then hee Whom Thunder hath made greater? Here at least We shall be free; th' Almighty hath not built Here for his envy, will not drive us hence: Here we may reign secure, and in my choyce To reign is worth ambition though in Hell: Better to reign in Hell, then serve in Heav'n.
Imagine, you were a priest in the church, who studied theology. You worked in church 10 years. It's a steady income for your family. And suddenly atheistic books are edited, people attending church are starting to question their faith. You see, that what you are teaching is lie, but it feeds you. What will you do? Will you continue to spread the lie or say publicly, that what you taught was dishonest?
xg: I agree with your point and would extend the question to Islam. It is not just that they have an investment of time and energy, they have sacrificed parts of their bodies (pretty rotten if you're a circumsised woman) and much of their emotional and intellectual growth, as well as so much of their life. There would be massive bitterness and regret if they "came out". Just look at Ayaan Kirsi Ali's books. It's a family-wide and family-deep reality that is so hard to question let alone disown.
I would personally devote my time to change the world....to advocate the Venus project: a movement to apply the scientific method to a world economic and social design.
It's what we ALL should have. What are we waiting for? Religion to destroy the world?
I agree we need to create a meta-government in cyberspace in the form of a site designed to harvest our collective will and insight. All it really takes is the means to make our political capital more tangible, like money does for wealth, but in an environment where its spent to support, oppose, or participate in analyzing and resolving real world, real time issues. Where we're encourage to find and secretly delegate our capital to those we find who seem better able to spend it wisely.
I'll send you a video, given that you seem to be a "thinker." :) I hope you get a chance to watch it. But I must tell you...it's best to leave your pre-conceived notions aside when you take a listen.
I'm listening to it now... and no, I hadn't heard of the venus project. You might like my blog (channel url) because I can already tell that we've reached similar conclusions from very different analysis.
What's most interesting to me is that he seems to be trying to explain the end result, while I'm only looking for the tiny tweaks we could make that lead us there. Thanks for the heads up.
bells ringing...emperor's new clothes anyone? except mant times over, obviously. yeah it would be awesome if it could be that instantaneous but i fear we have to just keep plugging away, heyho it doesnt depress me. peace
If we were to all think about it, I mean really think long and hard about it, I think most of us would say, "I'd rather reign in Hell than serve in Heaven". How small is God that he needs us to worship him and fawn over him? And if he doesn't NEED it then why did he create us? Point is, he didn't.
"I'm damn proud that we got the fuck away from your shit-country."
Actually, you didn't get that far away. I can't think of two countries with closer ties than the US and Britain. Plus I always thought Christians looked upon Christianity as a moral necessity.
What intelligent person needs to be taught metaphorical morals on such an arrogant basis, but for those many whom can't truly comprehend them for themselves.
You can clearly see the power and influence of you and your kind slipping away through the bottleneck of an hourglass. It's great to hear a sobbing baby who's not going to get the after dinner pudding his mother promised. Buy a life jacket to ensure you don't drown in the crocodile tears of you and your pious friends in the coming years.
The only downside to Islam not being true is that noone will get to see the look on the face of horny jihadists when they turn up in paradise ready for an eternity of sex only to be presented with a bowl of fruit instead!

I'm astonished that he did; and a little bit jealous. :D

ditto, but that's about the only thing we can be proud of America for, at the moment; after all being "under god" has done so much for our countries "respect" of human life in the world. That is to say, mostly nothing relative what so ever.

Jeff Dunham made a great point about the 72 virgins waiting for the Islamics. No one ever said that the virgins are women.

If we were to all think about it, I mean really think long and hard about it, I think most of us would say, "I'd rather reign in Hell than serve in Heaven". How small is God that he needs us to worship him and fawn over him? And if he doesn't NEED it then why did he create us? Point is, he didn't.

I like to think of it this way: If there is indeed a hell for me to go to, that's where all those with whom I'd rather spend time with are.

Third grade history books do tend to make people say things like: "I'm damn proud that we got the fuck away from your shit-country."
lol.....embarrasing somewhat.

You would think Atheism is a moral necessity, you self-justifying Brit wanker. I'm damn proud that we got the fuck away from your shit-country.

There's no reason to troll rate someone like Andrasthevader. His/her supreme stupidity does that enough on its own.

So do you have an actual point or counterpoint to make or have you grown out of hiding behind your racist pointless remarks?

The only downside to Islam not being true is that noone will get to see the look on the face of horny jihadists when they turn up in paradise ready for an eternity of sex only to be presented with a bowl of fruit instead!

You may get 72 virgins, but they come with 72 mothers in law. LOL
