  • I guess it all depends on what kind of boundaries you set for friendship. A few hundred years ago, the kind of closeness Idgie and Ruth share was acceptable even in a society that condemned homosexuality.

  • I am a 63 year old hetero male; and this is and has been my very favorite movie! The relationship between Ruth and Idgie is tender, it's fiercely loyal, it's enduring and it's loving. Because they are both women, it is gay; mostly it's intensely human. This whole film is about strong women and their relationships. The bond between Sipsie and Ruth, Evelyn and Ninny, Idgie and the homeless folks in the Hoover city, or her compassion for Smokey Lonesome, her hero-worship of Buddy. it's the best!

  • Beautifully done.

  • I was a kid when this movie came out, was just barely beginning to have my own stirrings of being gay. I didn't see the romance between them at that point. Now I watch it and Idgy's so gay she could belch rainbows. Great movie!

  • first off i would like to say why can't there be a full length movie of fried green tomatoes with out any parts to where it is spliced like it is. i mean come on people we live in a world of technology i mean if i can watch convoy the trucking movie in a single 1 1/2 hr straight through why not this movie or any other ones that are spliced up like a slice of pizza. second their kind of friendship has nothing to do with being in a relationship like women are today. it was a platonic one!!

  • Now- as far as I remember from reading the book, and watching the movie- in all technicality they were 'just' really good friends. But one would only stick to that response if they only took the written word- and even then it stretched the boundaries some times, with the amount they say 'I love you'. However, if you watch it, you'd realize that every single piece of subtext is telling us that they had a relationship. And I do not want to live in a world where that is not an understood fact.

  • Beautiful, I loved it. XD

  • Yeah if you read the book it pretty much says they were lovers, nice video shows there best moments :)

  • ESSE FILME É MTO BOM , VI QDO ERA PEQUENA , E AINDA AMO MAIS AINDA, NO NEED REMAKE , THEY'RE SPECIAL , É UM CLASSICO. PERFECT

  • I really love this video!!!

  • This is beautiful :)

  • loving relationship without going all the way. they both married men . and had a kid

  • Does every relationship between friends have to be a lesbian relationship?? I am so sick and tired of this crap. Believe it or not people, women can be very close without being "in love" with each other!!! Enjoy the characters for what they are: dear friends and nothing more!!

  • @palexa43 have you read the book ?

  • @palexa43 ANYONE can tell these 2 were MORE than friends, but it's done so eloquently and beautifully that it comes across as deep friendship. But, anyone who is insightful at all, can see these too loved each other respectfully, and, as more than friends.

  • @palexa43 while their relationship in the movie is a little ambiguous, in the book Ruth and Idgie were in love. the director of the movie even stated that the food fight scene between them is a metaphorical love scene....

  • i love this movie so much the vids great <3 <3 i really want to read the book

  • Ok, so if I have seen the movie and *LOVED* it, would you suggest reading the book? I didn't even know there was a book until someone told me about it. I think I would really like to but I would like some opinions as well. :) Thank you.

  • @MidnightJade21 Yes you should read the book, It goes more into idgie and ruth's relationship and shows that they were much more than just friends. It goes back and forth so you really have to pay attention to the dates and everything.

  • Great movie I have watched many times love it every time Mary Stuart Masterson is fantastic I love to watch her characters she really brings them to life

  • Gahh this whole movie I was waiting for one of them to make a move!?? shit you know they were in LOVE. They were so into each other it was disappointing they didnt act on it. I loved the movie though, :)

  • @surffchik oh my gosh that was the early 90s! there was no way in hell! ellen hadn't happened yet. the closest thing you had to a bisexual (nevermind an actual lesbian!) portrayal in the media was Aeon Flux in animated form on MTV. People really forget how things were just 20 years ago LOL! Even though I wish it were closer to the book I absolutely love the movie just the way it is! I'd say I want a remake but cannot picture it with other actors/ actresses... I do believe I'd hate it!

  • @debthemango Oh Holy crap Sooooo truueeee, the movie was like soo perfect a remake would probably be no comparison.

  • @debthemango I don't care that you never even see them kiss, its just SO obvious they're together anyway it makes it unnecessary. Instead, having the film this way allows for their passion to manifest in different ways in different scenes than what you would expect, that you wouldn't normally get to see so much of. Its what makes them so cute! In short, I'd much rather see the bee scene as is than see them kiss and the FOOD FIGHT scene rather than a sex scene. Just my opinion.

  • @BobigailE I absolutely agree with you, plus it lets a wider audience enjoy it because they get to see what they want to see, which is obvious by all the angry comments on every single clip I've watched (something I think would make Fannie Flagg very sad- I think her point of all her books is to be happy and treat one another with kindness- MHO).

  • @debthemango I second this comment it is a fabulous film

  • they were more than friends. i have the dvd and in the commentary by the director he says he was amazed by the chemistry and how it always seemed like there as a desire between the two in every sense. he also said that the food fight scene was the closest thing they had to a love scene in the movie

  • you did a lovely job on this video!

  • I love this movie.. just finished the book.. Nice video :)

  • I love this movie.. just finished the book.. Nice video :)

  • I am so glad I'm not the only one who thought they were a cute pairing. I love this video so much

    ^-^

    <3

  • oh come on guys....

how in hell could someone not see this relationship? there is obviously more than friendship, anyone who doesn't see it must be blind....

  • THANK YOU. AGREED.

Also, this is the sweetest movie ever. I am in love with Idgie.

  • i'm going to have to respectfully disagree... if you look at the dvd special features and extras ("making of" is especially insightful), or if you go snag the book from the library or the local bookstore, i think you might change your opinion...

  • jeez people need to read the book! it makes it pretty obvious that they were not "just friends"

  • @jnnnnnb I as well have to disagree. Through out the movie and book its very obviously implied they are in love. They don't need to be titles "lesbians" though, because I feel their love was too pure for a label. It even says in the book Idgie had a crush on Ruth.

  • they are so cute together =)

  • @miladynana yes!! perfect fit.. movie was......Powerful, Moving, so sad, some funny as hell, Unforgetable, Classic, Bravo!!!

  • @miladynana agreed

  • oh I love it!

fried green tomatoes is one of my fav books and movies.

    idgie and ruth forever :)

  • No Ive never seen the book or anything but Id really like to be able to pick it up and read it. I think the movies great how it is without adding that their more than friends.

  • go ahead and read the book. i enjoyed it, it's really good, really very well executed and imagined. let me know what you think. :)

  • @Ellenandcody:

You have to pay attention at the start of the movie to hear Ninny and Idgie aren't the same person.

Ninny says, and I quote the movie,

"I was practically adopted by the Threadgoode family; I married [Idgie's] brother, Cleo."

Also, Fried Green Tomatoes won an award from the GLAAD for "best feature film with lesbian content" in 1992.

I will warn you that the book is much, much darker than the movie in some places.

  • @sakinelle : what do you mean by much darker ?

You see, I love the movie and I really want to read the book, mostly because I love Idgie and Ruth, and I would be happy if I could know more about it

  • @miladynana:

Well, there's more things dealt with in the book. Race is addressed more, Evelyn gets nearly suicidal in some parts, and Ninny begins to go senile. Several other characters also die throughout the book that didn't die in the movie, so there's that as well.

  • did you read the book?

  • Idgie didn't get married or have kids. Lol the old woman "Cleo" in the movie, telling the story, is not Idgie. They may not have been leSbians, but they were at least in some kind of love. Think about it.

  • then how did Ninny Know Idgie and Ruth so well how did she know about Idgie younger yeah possibly but maybe it in the movie they were just real good friends. Also how come "Ninny's" last name was Threadgood same as Idgies.

  • @EllenandCody

Sorry, but Idgie never had kids, just Ruth has a child, called ,, Buddy´´ like Idgie´s brother who died a few years ago.

And Idgie never geht married so anyone.

    Who agrees ?

  • @misschocobanana Idgie had to have kids she said she did when kathy was going through the "change".

  • That isn't Idgie (although I agree that the director made it confusing at the end with the graveyard scene). I kind of wanted it to be her but then I read the book and it all made sense. I really recommend it- it fleshes out the whole town!

  • @misschocobanana I agree with you. I don't think she will pretend to be something else and marry a guy.

  • @misschocobanana idgie did have a son when she was kathys age,, her sons name was albert,, he died when he was 30.

  • @EllenandCody Back then, when people were "gay" they would almost NEVER acknowledge it. Ruth and Idgie didnt even understand they were in love with eachother. Ruth was engaged to Frank before she met Idgie (as an adult) and Idgie got married AFTER Ruth died. They were, indeed in love

  • this is the best movie ever. and this video is incredible! seriously INCREDIBLE.

  • Omfg that was amazing! And so CUTE! Especially the very end. I LOVE IT!<3333

  • beautiful video. :) one of my favorite movies.

  • Wow, I never realized how well that song went with the movie until I saw your video. It was great. Well done.

  • This song is awesome and all your videos are fantastic! you time everything so well. i showed some of my friends this video and it was one of the only lesbian themes videos that they were like "Oh thats so sweet ! they are so cute!" And when you can make those hetero gals Do THAT! then you have really accomplished something, Thanks for making this one too : )
