I love this. Those were the days when Morrissey took chances, rather than just making the safe, plodding predictability that pads a lot of his later solo albums.
@fatpizzaman u r just wrong You are the quarry was gr8 and even mozzer agrees this song is shameful and dire.... what is a pity is the endless tired old Best ofs with nothing much interesting even pic of him in a bath is a bit Carry on Mozzer
@henryhaven Scandanavia is pretty damn awesome but its not released yet which is a damn shame because it is a brilliant song.
I think it's important to remember that this song is kinda funny and less serious...maybe not quite as good as frankly mr shankly but it's enjoyable =).
Also ringleaders despite the rehashed stuff is my favourite release of his due to the quallity of the recordings.
I read that the other day on the True to You website, then immediately youtube'd it. I guess the accordion keyboard thing probably seals the deal. But hey, still a good song.
Love the pic at 1:22 - always have. It's perhaps the most ambitious his hair has ever been, curving back on to itself as it does. One could literally surf it. I've never believed this was self reflective; "with your mascara and your fender guitar" - clearly someone else. Stones make sense... But there's no way he wrote this without realizing he was simultaneously incriminating himself. Any performer would....
Isn't it pretty obvious that this song is purely ironic? "Oh, get off the stage / Because I've given you enough of my time / And the money that wasn't even mine." Or maybe I just don't know. Who said it's about Rolling Stones?
Although I would say Morrissey has continued with great dignity unlike other performers who often appear as 'muton dressed as lamb'. Morrissey has stayed true to himself hence why he still performs
I suppose he assumed he would be long dead before this applied to him. Oh well...

@henryhaven the stuff that he recorded for "You Are The Quarry" and most of "Ringleader Of The Tormentors" is infintely more forgettable than this.

Morrissey says this song makes him 'shudder' and thinks it's 'Pathetic' - Hindsight is a great thing.
