Hi EoghanSandberg , Thank you for responding to my comment .Im an aussie of scottish decent. My grand father came from the Isle Of Skye,he spoke fluent Gaelic, unfortunately I have had no need to learn gaelic. I do have an interest in the cultural side of things. I also enjoy the irish culture as well and love their music and dancing.
He's a Gael, I said something in Gaelic (Scottish Gaelic admittedly, but still) - a rough translation would go along the lines of "I adore the bagpipes, he's a great uillean pipe player".
@AthanatosSAVVASGR The bagpipes certainly pre-date the Ionian invasions. Where you have sheep and goats you had bagpipes - back to 2,000 BC. By the way, the Romans never got to Ireland.
I'ts more subtle than with the bagpipes, but there's a background drone that's part of the sound here. Also, because these pipes are played by way of bellows and finger stops, there's a more warbling sound than you would typically get from a valved isntrument such as the saxophone. Not that a sax couldn't produce a similar warble, but you'd have to work at it.
Sorry, I meant "keys," it's just that they meet the basic definition of a valve. Namely, they're hinged and their purpose is to modify airflow through the instrument - which is, of course, how different tones are produced. Oh well, chalk it up to the fact that I never took band in school.
Sure. These pipes are double reeded (like oboes and bassoons) and the timbre depends far less on the resonant properties of the pipe -- so most of the sound is pure reed. Saxes are single-reeded and the timbre is far more dependent on the resonant properties of the sax.
Everyone I hope. I mean bagpipes use reeds as far as I know but the timbre is different. As is the attack and just about everything else. I'm sure you could find an example of bagpipes alongside soprano somewhere.
you don(t listen the difference with a soprano sax ?? it's so different!! Uilleann pipes have 7 reeds !!!! 3 regulateur and 3 drones and one chanter how do you ??
ok well i never realized that! but basically i was referring to the sound of the chanter. I think they would sound very close together. but you didn't have to call me stupid. Just say that i was ignorant. Anyway, thx for the information. Now i have a better understanding. Btw, no hard feelings. :-)
@uilleannmarseille there are some chanters that sometimes sound like a soprano sax - I've been playing pipes for years now, and whenever I hear a soprano sax i always do a double take lol
This is really great... I continue listening to the way he uses the drones... the drones melody of the first reel is awesome...
another stunning piper is Fabio Rinaudo, a guy from Italy, who plays in the band Birkin Tree... listen to his playing, he learnt Uillean Pipes playin under the wing of Liam O' Flynn... With such a master, he got great!
it must be really difficult!!! he's playing the melody on the chanter and the bass notes on the drones, with the palm of the hand... xD i feel like i'll never learn
I am a piper from rotterdam, Holland. I love this sound of the ullian pipe's. On one day, when a ship, loaded with gold is comming in, I gonna buy me self pipe's like that! Well done!!!!!
Uil, a Steve, abair borb! Cha bidh mise a’ pògadh do thòin / Ní beidh mé ag pógadh do thóin - learn to spell, if you're going to try your hands on Gaelic.
@EoghanSandberg Maith fear a Eoghan! Is as Sasana mé ach táim i mo chónaí in Éirinn le trí blianna anois agus táim ag foghlaim Gaeilge agus píobaí uilleann chomh maith. Is breá liom gach sort píobaí. An seinm tú píob a Eoghan?
@MacTireMhaighEo - Och cha cluich mi na pìoba, ach ’s math leam a’ cheòl an dèidh sin :) Oh, agus tha do Ghàidhlig na h-Éireann glè mhath (a bheil thu a' tuigsinn gach a' sgriobhadh mise nuair a' bruidhinn mi ’sa Ghàidhlig btw - tha mo chuid Ghaeilge uabhasachd dòna, às a seo, sgriobh mi ’sa Ghàidhlig
@EoghanSandberg Tuigim gach rud a Eoghan. Ná bí buartha faoi do chuid Gaeilge, ta sé iontach (glé mhaith) a chara. Tá sé an-deas bualadh leat agus ag scríobh trí Gaeilge chomh maith. Cén áit in Alba in a bhfuil tú? Táim in gCathair na Mart (Westport) i gContae Mhaigh Eo (County Mayo).

their sounds are very close together i think, you may be able to play more notes on the sax, and of course they both use reeds
