hey i got the same problem but luckily i knew the answer to our problem without anyones help. first go near the totem (dont go past it) second you need to play CHAKA, DON, CHAKA, DON, then hold CHAKA the totem will rise up then hit DON, CHAKA, DON, CHAKA (might need to hold CHAKA again) then it should rise if done correctly then play DON, CHAKA, DON, CHAKA that should do it the japanese and US version are not the same note that this works only on the US version

Because you rushed or too slow, it has to time it perfectly. First, press the Triangle ,O ,Triangle,O. Then, wait until the root pop up (make sure you dont press any button yet...)then in a split of a second, press the triangle,O, Triangle,O again before the root go back down, keep doing it until it reach the tree reach the top. It took me while too.
