It's well I remember Jimmy Carter and his time in office. A mess on domestic policy, with horrible stagflation, and even worse on foreign policy. The Iranians held our Diplomats hostage for 444 days of his Administration, because NOBODY feared or respected the USA with Carter at the helm. His successor was Ron Reagan. Iran released the hostages on DAY 1 of Reagan's term in office, because THAT President was not to be trifled with, and they knew it. Love didn't get them out, Jimmy, fear did.
