  • Thank you man, I've been trying to figure out the freakin pen tool for ever. Your the only tutorial that gives keyboard shortcuts

  • Haha I really liked the end... "YOU ARE WRONG!" Thanks for the humor, I think sometimes we take design too seriously. ^_^

  • Best tutorial out there for beginners. Thanks a bunch man!

  • AHH thank you for simply pointing out the alt + click. it's where I was getting all screwed up and no other tutorial I watched pointed that out.

  • Cracked up at 2:20, Pen Tool was refusing to do things wrong.

  • Thank u soooooo much! If u sell a dvd tutorial, ill b the first to buy- i understand ur tutorial perfectly! Geez thx

  • Thank you!!!

  • Thankyou this has me loads :)

  • You need to finish the first pen tool selection, then make another selection around the background in the inside of the handle.

  • alright i ran into another problem :[ .. alright lets say that you made the outline of the cup and you removed the background but the color in the middle of the handle is still there how do you remove that?

  • awesome

  • Thanks a lot for this tutorial mr god man.

  • What series of Photoshop is this? I have Photoshop Elements 7.0 and I can't seem to find a pen tool that looks like yours. Sorry , I'm new to Photoshop!

  • Notice how your work path is the cup, when I outline something, it is the opposite, so The part that gets filled is the outside of my picture, not the picture itself, I'm think ithis is just a problem with my settings, is there anyway to fix this?

  • Very good tutorial on the pen tool. A lot of people know how to use it, but do not know how to teach it well. You have illustrated the salient points. That's important.

  • How can you delete curve by pressing alt button in CS4? It doesn't work here! :-(

  • @egmaster1985 now you would have to hold control or command and select a point that you want to remove and press delete. or go into the sub tools under the pen tool and choose the delete anchor point tool.

  • @Gingbourdon hey there, i would like to know how you can give a color to a stroke so that is it like s troke in illustrator? so that when i'm moving an anchor point, the strike moves to also, now my stroke is colored but when i'm editing the anchor point the colored line does not follow , could you help pleas?

  • it works pretty wel.. hmm that's horibel xd

  • haha nice vid

made me laugh when you were trying to do it wrong but it kept coming out good at the start lool

  • thank you, all i needed to know was ALT. it was a pain in the ass.

  • THANK YOU VERY MUCH THIS VIDEO WAS A BLESSING FOR ME. IM IN GRAPHIC DESIGN SCHOOL AND WE ARE CUTTING OUT AN IMAGE AND PASTING IT INTO A DIFFERENT BACKGROUND. YOUR VID IS THE BEST I'VE SEEN SO FAR. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. YOU'RE A GREAT TEACHER BROTHER.

  • Very good tutorial i learn a lot with this pen tool i'm very confuse on how to use this before..

  • thanks for this tutorial! It was making me crazy that icon with the vectors with that color! I'm going to subscribe! you point out the most basic things for noobs like me! THanks again!.

  • is there a way when you can pen tool two pics and put them together???

  • @rayvyn15 like cutting a person out and sticking them in another picture?

  • Isurus, an original and progressive rock band based in South London, are looking for a vocalist. We have a professionally equipped studio, currently are a guitarist, bassist, and drummer and are looking for a likeminded singer to complete our lineup. Someone versatile with a great voice . Think Maynard James Keenan, Mike Patton, James Labrie, etc

  • Dude your a life saver, Now I know what was screwing me up. I didnt do the Alt and Click thing.

  • I may be a bit immature but I sure love to stroke my path everyday! Sometimes two times a day!

    Nice tutorial also :D

  • Thank you very much for your video Ging. Can you (or someone) please tell me how you can select both paths at the same time. (If the handle and the cup outline are not both being selected at the same time).

  • Good Tutorial!

  • Every time you click the anchor point you just placed, you are getting rid of the curve. Your line is no longer smooth and you split the toggle handles. You don't need to click on each anchor when drawing, the only time you should need to do this is at a sharp angle or corner.

  • @doublehmedia Click on a selection tool then the refine edge. There you will see the feather which will make it smooth. What does basic mean to you?

  • Wow, this helped me soo much! THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO!!

  • Thank you very much, it's very usefull.

  • I have seriously NEVER wanted it to continue the curve on my line once, so is there any way to make it NOT continue the curve as the default, so I dont have to alt+click every single point I make?

  • wow... until this vid... the Pen Tool was the ultimate, hardest tool ever ... couldn't get my head around it ... but now i know, so ty!

  • zomg booooorrrinng...

  • thank you, very well done! :)

  • THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! :D

  • Lemme help u... QUICK SELECT button and VIOLA!

  • oh thankyou, your video is the only one which actually helped me to use pen tool

  • i'm new in photoshop and this help's a lot ..:) thank you for sharing your tutorial. love it

  • thanks! that was helpful!

  • This video was so helpful! thank you so much! it was actually funny too lol

  • Nice tutorial.. very helpful.. thanks2...

  • liked it liked it liked it brill tut thnx helped LOADS

  • sweet I figured it out. with pen tool I just clicked to add 2 anchor points to make a line that goes over the part of the line I wanted to trace. then i went to add anchor point and added 1 point right in the middle of the line I made. Then all I did was put the arrow directly on the middle point, clicked on it held the mouse button down and moved the point to get the perfect curve. Then simply went to stroke path, simulate brush pressure an Walla! professional looking line. Thank you for vid!

  • LOL 2:09-19, "thats actually working quite well....thats horrible." Great vid though. Im on 1st year for digital media major and for final project i got a picture i drew i scanned into the computer. I planned on tracing wit pen tool but that tool can be your best friend or your worst enemy depending on how well you know to use it. Its new to me so its so frustrating. All i want to do is trace so i can use stroke path an apply brush pressure to make the lines look legit. Any one have suggestions?

  • Please, don't use the Alt-key trick unless you really do want a sharp corner! Otherwise you shoot yourself in the foot when you try to transform or tween or do other useful things with the path, because the software will treat it as an angle instead of a curve. If you do this and someone else has to use your path, they will laugh at you! (if they don't punch you...)

  • for us pitiful beginners it was very helpful. My photoshop class didn't tell me some of these options they just say draw this thing for a grade.. nice to have youtube, since I've learned a lot looking to these tutorial vids... keep posting we raw beginners need them.

  • a bit slow and monotonous, but I totally understand the ALT + click and CTRL + Click on the handles now, thank you very much!

  • I prefer using the pen tool in Adobe Illustrator, but it's a good tutorial anyways.

  • Pointless comment...

  • Thank you very much..i've had difficulties using the pen tool and your tutorial made it much more easier for me..Thanks again! : )

  • this aint ps cs4... I can't get my path to go like ants and copy it on another layer. It just copies the path, without the object within the path...

  • thank u thank u thank uuu for posting that u totally saved my ass!! XD

  • "you are wrong! and you will be laugh at." I know im missing the whole moral of this but you have to admit it was pretty funny. Good Tutorial though

  • its a little tribute to my friend's guitar teacher. his teacher told him that one day so I though it would go good in there lol.

  • Thank you for the video first

And Should I Hold the mouse button to do the curve ?

  • Yes, hold the mouse button down and move the mouse to make a curve

  • Hi Should I hold on the mouse button to do the curve ?

  • lol at 2:10. its supposed to be twisted but youve done it perfectly correct.

  • I rarely use the pen tool, but I'm working with a dark background right now and I need the pen tool to make some curves. But every time I finish up, the curves fill in themselves. How do I make this stop?

  • he explains that in the fist minute. watch it again.

  • you see 3 boxes in up left corner when you select the pen tool, you should klick the second one

its like a box with the pen tool logo inside,

    hope i help'd

  • thanks for uploading this. very helpful.

  • am i the only one that cant find the pen tool??

  • what version are you running?

  • Are you using Adobe Photoshop? It's supposed to be among the standard tools. Alternatively you can press 'p' on your keyboard. Make sure you have the default interface too.

  • hahaaha, it's by the text tool or the "T". hope that helps.

  • Thank You SOOOO MUCH =)

    5*

  • after you press alt can you let go of it? O_O; i did the thing once and then now i cant do it anymore X_X

  • ALT BUTTON !!!

yeah, now i understand, thank you a lot !!!

  • This one is the best man thanks so Alt button is the key thank you so much..!!

  • The tutorial is actually pretty good, but the way you are referring it to us really sucks i think... You sound really boring, pauses between words are sooo looong and that tone of your voice made me sleepy :) i really ment no offense, but if i were you, i would definately work on how to do an interesting tutorial :)

    Regards.

  • Thank you. Most tutorials or manuals skip over the little steps, and that's usually all I need to know to get the bigger picture. Great tutorial.

  • yeah but instead of it taking the image around the area i want it takes away the image i want and leaves me with the other crap i want to get rid of.

  • just outline the thing you want to get rid of and delete the layer of it? o.o; iderno.

  • probably the best tutorial about pen tool I ever seen in my whole life:: extremely helpfull:: GRACIAS AMIGO

  • Wow really good at explaining things, helped me out alot! Thanks!!

  • yey :D 10x

  • You are a better explainer than that other dude with the lady in a bikini tutorial. This tutorial so answered all my questions!!!!

  • the Alt+click thing is the trick!! I was stuck at that point for quite some time!! Thanx:-)

  • when I play with the pen tool, the symbols for Fill and Stroke are faded and unusable. It also creates some sort of vector layer, and a black mass is all over my pen lines. what am I doing wrong?

  • I have watched about a dozen tut's for the pen tool, this one is by far the best, thanks...

  • ty for the esc bottom info I didnt know how to make a new outline without closing the gap

  • ty ☺

  • OMG...luv it...finally i get it :D

Thank u sooo much...and with a SEXY voice is sooooooo much better :O LLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOLLLLLLL

  • This tutorial is about uhm... xD haha nice start :P

    Anyway, nice tutorial :D

  • i love your tutor..it's very clear and easy to keep up! Love it!

  • He draws his first path and then already makes his first mistake; on a curve you need to pull the handle of your first anchor point, he doesn't do that. Check my video in which I correct someone else, it's a common mistake made by people who are not very skilled with the pen tool.

  • Yes you are right, I watched your video too and tried to send you a message but you've disabled comments and messages. But I have Illustrator CS3 and a book to accompany it called Illustrator CS3 Bible and the author points out exactly what you are saying.

  • I'm not suprised, because unlike the person who uploaded this video... I actually run a Phtoshop for years now with close to 1.6 million visitors/year, I can't allow to make such stupid mistakes or I have a hundred Emails in my inbox with people correcting me hehe.

That's why I still advice people to read professional books, videos or to take a course, because the quality of internet tutorials is often very poor.

  • Beginners often diagree, but in all fairness, how can they know which tutorial offers the best information, they're still learning. Wise of you to buy a book.

  • wow thanks so much.. it helped me a lot!

  • Thanks that was a big help :)

  • YOU'RE WRONG & YOU WILL BE LAUGHED AT .... nah just kiddinq ! LOL

    Thankks 4 the TutOrial - qood help ! :D

  • THANGS

  • That was extremely helpful, thank you :)

  • Lol Finally, I can make curves Hahaha, Nice Tutorial :P

  • Has some nice tips, thanks a lot.

  • Wrong. A point on a curve should always start with two handles. Using your false method, a user will never be able to make for example a full circle with only two anchor points.

  • ops...wtf ald fart talk like a man opps..wtf..gay...gay...gayyy.. damn it i cant find a desent tutorial..fk gays...damn it..

  • hah nvm.. selected the wrong layer.. woo pro -.-

  • im pretty good at PS and i know pen tool etc but for some reason im stuck :S when i go to the Paths palette i cant click stroke or fill.. both are unclickable?? please help...

  • After you selected your cup. You filled it with a color as an example. But you didn't say how you UNFILLED it. You did the same with the stroke tool... you didn't say how to UNstroke it. I tried everything.

  • Ctrl + Z on PC or Command + Z on Mac.

Use this to go back on your history states which you can see in your history palette. ;-)

  • Before you start your tutorial you should say what program you are using and what version.

  • It kinda looks like Photoshop Cs2... I don't think you need to define it... Most people already know.

  • thanks man

    very helful tutorial

  • Many thanks bro, That was very helpful :)

  • great tutorial a newbie here trying to make graphics and you solved my pen tool problem now officially my favorite tool

  • really helpful!

i just have one question..how would i cut off the shape of the cup and paste/move it onto a new background?

the pen tool doesn't allow me to cut it if i were using a lasso tool

  • Thank u so much!

  • this really helps alot when i'm struggling to figure out how to use the pen tool

  • Hey man your tutorial is so cool. It made a lot clear to me! I hated pen tool cuz I didn't know what to eat it with.. Now I know. THANX

  • best tutorial for pen tool beginner.. thank u very much cus the rest that i have seen.. confused the hell out of me lol... thank u again

  • thanks

  • Great! Thanks!

  • hahaha fail! "that kinda works quite well..."

  • Wouldn't the magnetic lasso tool work just as well? I'm a newbie and still learning but I noticed the magnetic tool can almost do what he just did. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but nice tutorial.

  • there are different ways to do this. He did it with the pen to show how it works. The pen is more complicated and is necessary when the lasso tool won't work as good.

  • great tut man, really help as when i used pen tool i didnt select paths, i'm an amatuer at this, loved your humour to, lol "your wrong and you will be laughed at."
