A good way to both generate power and keep from leaning is to twist the foot of the hand that's throwing the shot. It opens the hips keeping the restriction of motion from pulling you over. Also, if you twist your left foot while throwing the left hook, it will help to assist you in sliding left, and give you return energy to use on the following cross/uppercut.
One coach to another, well done. You kept it simple, and didn't try to cram a whole bunch of information into one session. The things you said are true, and are taught in every good boxing club. Too many coaches, and wannabe fighters try to copy Pacquiao, and others. The guys you see on TV are one of a kind, and have moves no one should try to copy. Stick to basics, until you have enough experience to try out those fancy moves.
this sounds good advice for boxing, and i know this is a boxing channel.. but what bout for reality fighting, or mma, where points are not an issue, and glove size smaller/nonexistent, and you're trying to get a 1hit knockout?
@mofogie If you fight to try to get a "one hit KO" your most likley going to lose the fight. This applies on the street, in MMA, and boxing. Odds are very high you are not going to KO your opponent. More importantlywhen some tries to one hit KO, they alomsot always get in a very stiff robotic stance this does two things. It makes you VERY easy to read, and avoid. Also your throw with alot less speed, and velocity when you tense up. Go for speed, and one-two combos in ANY fight. unless yer a pro.
@mofogie You answered your own question and if this is Boxing why mention MMA or street fighting? Boxing and MMA are good for sport and they can give you good reflexes, power, agility etc along with the basics of any fighting scenario. But in the street there are no rules, just stay calm, don't square up your stance move to the outside of their punches (street fighters usually throw wild haymakers and hooks) And DO NOT go for a 1 hit KO's.
I see so many guys in MMA getting KTFOed from leaning in like that and getting a counter uppercut-hook to the jaw.
People lean to get better range on their punches. The best way I found to get range without leaning in is to fully rotate the shoulders and even a little at the hips of the punching side.
@georgeou yeah another thing most MMA fighters do is drop their hands too much. once they start throwing they just swing for the fences and are all offense. luckily i caught on quick and always keep them up but lots of guys at my gym need to be reminded almost nonstop. its hard to find MMA guys that have excellent technique on stand-up since usually its best to be from some sort of grappling backround like me. thats why i love watching pro boxing. but to me MMA is more fun and effective
@xXBeastfromdaEastXx Reminding others or yourself is almost useless because it has to be a habit. I'll practice it at the bags by throwing 40 double left hooks in a row while my right hand is glued to my face. You really want to drop that right hand while throwing the left but you have to get comfortable throwing with the other hand blocking. Even if you gotta tape the other hand to your face, do it.
@georgeou well for me its already a habit thank goodness. even when im tired as hell i do a pretty good job of keeping them up. but one of my friends used to be hopeless at keeping hands up but when we sparred he finally got the message lol so i think getting hit is the best way to learn. thats when u really know its worth it haha. and do u do straight up boxing or what?
@xXBeastfromdaEastXx Getting countered in the face is usually a pretty good lesson to keep the non-punching hand up, but not always. If I'm not practicing it, I forget sometimes.
I'm just learning some muay thai on the side and hoping to get into a smoker/inter-gym match in the next year sometimes. I'm not a fighter, you'll have to look at my youtube channel to see what I do :).
in contras leaning can create additional force for the next puch,, just got to know which puch... leaning is the potential force that sprinters use for lauching off.. potential energy is proportional to kinetic energy... like when you push a car you need to LEAN,,
if you have quick feet then leaning become a great technique.. well you dont have to throw a hook from the leaning position.. there other shots,, but yes most boxers dont use it,, so we say leaning is mistake... it is not ,, watch pacquio lean
I see so many fighters even mine that get the upperbody over their front leg when they throw their jab which causes them to lunge with their rear cross and they can't hook to body or head, let alone throw a third punch and can't get out of the way.Boxing is balance which creates great leverage and economy of movement.

Agree. Counter uppercut works against fighter that over-commit to the right hand, or the left hook right hand.
