Excellent tempo, pacing, and timing. Played just the way Bach intended....with a very "mechanical" flavor. Something a little off with the octave, but beautifully played otherwise.
Thanks you for posting. I enjoyed it. Why is that it looks like you're playing this in F major where it sounds to me in E major?? I could be wrong...but i doubt it
What is the second manual for on harpsichords? I've never seen anyone play on it, yet, some of the notes are automaticly depressed as you play the lower manual.
this is clearly not F major. i'm thinking the harpsichord was tuned to A440 and the player transposed into E major in order to get closer to a C256 tonality which would have been closer to the standard tuning in bach's own time (C256 = roughly A415). it clearly changes the sound of the piece but what can you do? period instrumentalists make questionable decisions often - it is what it is
@tyler201020 In fact the first notes r indeed F A F C F F and there is no G# there is also several Bflats throughout the entire song ... maybe u haven't seen the sheet music but i have and there is no G# :)
@juggernautseru16 I have seen it. and i am aware its in F. and obviously there is no G# in F major but there is one in the key of E. Which he is playing it in. I know the notes man. i'm just saying that this is a transposed version.
@juggernautseru16 Okay i now see the problem. i looked at the keys and he is playing it in F major however his harpsichord isn't tuned to standard pitch. its actually all down a half step. thats why I thought he was playing it in E (which in all reality i would still concider him playing it in E major because transposing songs make them sound so different. IT SOUNDS WEIRD IN E MAJOR!!
@tyler201020, There's no problem. A=415 is common in early music circles today; it's a convenient pitch level that allows historically-copied harpsichords and fortepianos to function optimally. There was no 'standard' or ISO pitch in Europe in the 18th century. Fixed-do solfege, perfect pitch and equal temperament were not standard either. Music doesn't get better in history; it just changes according to prevailing tastes.
nice played, nice fingering, may i ask, are you coming (also like me) from that old school, that it is not allowed (or should be leaved) to play the thumb on black keys ? i learned this from my piano female teacher, in the past there was this believing that a thumb on black key brings Doom.. :o) that was only superstition.
@anonymusich , no really, play along with it, I know it is supposed to be in F Maj but this guy is definitely playing it in E Maj. His first notes are E G# E B E E, or 13151Octave in E. Strange that he should flatten it by a semi but hey suits me as my guitar is tuned down by a semi so I can play along with this guy and pretend it is in F :)
@stringninja1 - Are you just pulling our collective chains? He's playing the Bb, not the F#, G#, C# and D# required for the E Maj. Check out Wiki for some info on standard pitch. His harpsichord may be tuned to A415not A440 that you're probably using. Hence the semi-tone down from you. Just guessing though. He's definitely playing in F.
I learned to play this when I was... Well, some 10 years ago or so. I had always liked it, but now I´m a bit dissapointed with it and with the way I was thaught...
This was really great! This is literally my first piece by Bach I am learning and it's difficult for me to grasp it ...yet I am also learning Appassionata by Beethoven and it's going better than this! Bach is evil...an evil genius that is!
Good version. Wendy Carlos took this faster in her version, and on balance I think that was the right decision, as the double "trills" sound lighter if taken faster.
ha! I FINALLY learned to play the whole thing! It gets boring, but I suppose it is a good 'learning' thing. well, duh, that's what it was intended to be.. but I like it..
I already play Invention NO 4 and NO 13, and I'm learning Invention 8. I got a harpsichord simulation software, that I connect to my digital piano. Harpsichord it's more difficult in some aspects, as any accidential weak touch on a key produce a loud sound. So any small mistake became fair noticiable.
On the other hand, you might say there is less emotion in Bach than not. My point being not that Bach's work is void of emotion but that it is not composed merely of it. In Bach there is a fiery, intellectual stimulation. It is masculine, it is vigorous. Unlike Romantic music, which seems too often composed entirely of emotion, for a result that is melodramatic and weak. Perhaps the mentally stimulating works of Bach somehow manage to stimulate the heart and soul as well.
it's pretty much an etude I think,I don't think emotion really comes into it that much, it's just something simple and probably meaningless that sounds nice.
Yes, the two-part inventions are technical studies, but there's much more to them than that. Bach intended them not just as exercises in hand parity but as models of composition. The problem with this clip is not with the music but the performance -- it's too slow. (The piece should take about 50 seconds; at that tempo it's really exciting.) Also, listen to the counterpoint -- it's marvellous.
Exactly. When I was about 15 years old, this was something like my favourite piece. It is definitely full of emotion, especially when played faster, and the counterpoint is indeed marvellous!
Either you're harpsichord needs tuning, or you're playing in g major. And bespin, this tempo is perfect, any faster and it sounds rushed and it looses its flowing and gentle nature.
No, he isn't playing in a different key -- he's playing in F. But he's playing in something closer to Bach's F as opposed to ours. Keys are not absolute; they're defined relative to a specific tuning practice and instruments in Bach's time were tuned lower than today's.
Pretty sure what energy meant is that a lot of young pianists do not incorporate much if any feeling or true musicality into their playing, and since the majority of young pianists are asian, it makes sense. Exceleent performance, beautiful instrument, sprightly and truly Bach.
I have to agree with willyhog. I know some Asians play with emotion and feeling, but for the most part, they're basically slave-driven robots forced by there parents to practise for 6 hours a day starting from the time they can breathe. Of course, not all are like that. It's just a general stereotype, but it happens a lot.
Well if everybody stops patronizing their concerts and buying their records, maybe be it will be better for classical music in general. It's not just the asians who are guilty either. As soon as the market can differentiate between the liberace/clayborn and classical music, we will still have lang lang/kissin/yundi li et al.
yes. let's boycott concerts and records by "those" people. then maybe the purity of classical music will be forever preserved and reserved for the white race, who are obviously the only ones who can grasp this perfect music.
Definitely not jealousy. Because I'm not jealous of Bill Gates even if he happens to be tone deaf. Also, I included Kissin who is white the last time I checked. But he massacres Beethoven and that's not acceptable. Classical music is for everybody but for anybody to flaunt themselves as masters when their very musicality is questionable. That's downright insulting.
This was a very nice performance. I was interested in this because lately I've been listening to "Firth Of Fifth" by Genesis and it dawned on me that it's possible that Tony Banks' keyboard part MAY have been inspired by this song (way back in 1973).
Simply outstanding...The piano is really weak for performing baroque pieces.Even when not all have the oportunity to play on a real harpsichord, everyone should play baroque music with the harpsichord voice of their keyboard. for yall that don't know the top part of the harpsichord is just a softer version of the bottom :).

On the other hand, you might say there is less emotion in Bach than not. My point being not that Bach's work is void of emotion but that it is not composed merely of it.
