@traxxasman4 You want to inspect your valve clearance every 6 months with a feeler gage to insure your valve clearance is still in spec, other than that the top end on the z400 is great and runs like a top, if you notice that the top end is getting a ticking sound or the quad is hard to start you may want to re-check the valve clearance, that’s the main thing on the z400 is the valve clearance. You should never have to "rebuild" your top-end unless something broke or your valves are cupped.
@traxxasman4 I've had mine for 8 years and it's been reliable as hell, the only thing I’ve been replacing over the years is tires lol. Getting the jetting and right valve clearance took a bit of messing around with but ever since I got that figured out she's been really good to me. Just use a high quality oil like AMS Oil change it every 3 months, use a high quality coolant like engine ice, keep the valves in spec and keep the chain nice a waxed and tight, and you should never have a problem :)
@StankiiRiders More than likely, unless youre already running super rich. When you take the lid off the air box it really lean's things out by a tun. Plus if you want to make the most of a performance gain from taking your air box lid off, adding a little bit more fuel to the mixture is key to a noticeable power gain. Running lean might also harm your motor, it will make it run allot hotter and it's known to damage piston rings and such. So if you do, just make sure your not running lean.
@StankiiRiders No it's not bad at all if you keep a more then regular maintenance on your air filter. With the lid off you will need to clean it way more often, I've been cleaning mine every 4 to 6 hours of riding. You will also need to bump up the main jet on your carburetor as to taking the lid off will really lean things out. I went from a 160 to a 170 main jet after the lid was taken off. But its really worth it, defiantly a noticeable power gain.
Hey I just bought a 2012 z400 limited.
I ride only in the woods
How often should I rebuild my top end on my z400 (for future reference) ?
Also how Reliable is the z400 if you keep up with the maintenance?
Thanks:)
