After takeoff, we'll be serving a steaming tatortot hotdish with jello-salad and bars followed by a full beverage service of coffee and coolaid. A complete list of our coolaid flavors available on this flight can be found in the back of your inflight magazine Lutherans Aloft. Lutherans Aloft is yours to keep at the conclusion of this flight. In addition to inflight service information, you will find many interesting articles about exotic destinations served by Northwest such as Fargo and Duluth
Man, I remember that hideous brown interior from when I was little! Sadly, all the boring blues and grays the airlines have now actually make me feel nostalgic for it!
Those uniforms are soooo cheey, yet the flight attendants were wearing them on flight 209 on September 17, 1989, which was the flight and date that I met my wife.
It's really amazing to read the level of ignorance reflected in the comments here. It appears that the average age of YouTube users is 13. This video was produced 21 years ago, at a time when onboard video was still a novelty. The comments are supposed to be about the video, not what you thought about your flight last month, or if get a free ticket on the day you wanted.
it sux how award travel on NW starts at 25,000 miles with so many restrictions and blackout dates. I used to use their frequent flyer all the time, now it's impossibile
Wow! they never used life vests? wow! they'll just hug the seat bags, how tiring is that, if that flight crashed and it took rescue operations for days you'd let go the life preserver for sure.
This was probably a version for non-overwater flights. It is a requirement to show how to use life vests if a flight overflies water or leaves/arrives at an airport near a large mass of water.
On second thought, I just realized that the video mentions that the slides double as rafts, and that the safety instructions card makes no mention of the life vest. Hmmmm veeeeeeeery weird indeed!
And the sad part is that even Northwest employees hated it... it was nicknamed "Autumn in Vietnam" by flight crew (even the Vietnam vets working for NWA!) due to the horrible cabin colors. The seats and carpets of these older 757s (now known as the 5500-series in NWA-speak) have since been recovered in a similarly-awful blue fabric.
BTW, NWA's magazine that was known as "Portfolio" at the time is now known as "WorldTraveler".
This is when Northwest actually had in-flight entertainment. Now, Northwest took that along with pillows and blankets. You also have to pay for food. Northwest Airlines is one of the worst airlines for coach class. The only way I would fly to Northwest is when they would give inflight entertainment, pillows, blankets, and free food.

Maybe the reason why NWA doesn't have IFE for mainland USA domestic is that it doesn't have coast-to-coast length flights. STILL, Continental is getting AVOD IFE in its newer 737s... so... :|
I'd also like to see any of the late 90s videos if you have them. I remember seeing them several times going to/from Europe on NW- I remember they had an intro which was pretty cool.
Don't be surprised by the length of the video. The actual safety demo is actually 3 minutes long, the rest are two other segments, one about service onboard and a WorldPerks frequent flyer program commercial.
757s couldnt fly to Europe until ETOPS in the late 90s... Now theyre practically all they use. ..

Yr, I actually really am 13, but i love Northwest airlines, as i flew with them last month on a MD-11 to las vegas for the first time! GREAT VID!
sTuSx 3 years ago
well that would be amazing if they ever flew MD-11s, which they didn't, and they retired the DC-10s about a year or 2 ago.
