I thought it was all about a stranger she met on the terminnal... Could mean alot of things or nothing. I first took it as being with someone and not really loving them like they love you then they realize it and say see you around.
"Vienna calls it a "reverse strip-tease song" - putting the clothes back on, if you will, starting from the end of the relationship going back to the beginning, before the relationship happened. The "reverse strip-tease" idea was how Sam Phillips described one of her own songs at a concert Vienna attended."
Okay so I just want to place out my idea of what is happening in this song. First: Imagine that you are in an airplane terminal with a female friend/family member with whom you share a connection with. Now, Imagine that the same friend/family member has Alzheimer's and your sending her to a home where she can get help. This song is the reflection of your thoughts towards the member and your confused feelings towards sending her away. If you would like me to explain more I can.
I thought that this song was about how two people, who used to be fiercely in love have now become different people and decided to separate...but a reverse love story works a lot better!!!
I looked up the meaning and found a site that said that Teng told her fans that it was a "backwards lovesong" so we start at the breakup and work our way to how it all began. But anyone can see it however they want :D
Only just stumbled upon this song so I'm not gonna offer any interpretation, however I have to say, modern music nowadays have pretty bland lyrics, nothing that really just hits you in the head with its brilliance, nothing that makes you walk out of the door into a new world.
...And then all those things were just proven false by how much of a masterpiece this song is.
The way interpret the song is that she'd given her daughter up for adoption and some time later they meet again in an airport. This is because she says "And I know I dont want this, Oh I swear I don't want this there's a reason not to want this. But I forgot" and when she says "Who are you taking Coffe no sugar?" and "Who are you a stranger in the shell of a lover?". Think about it:)
A song about living in the safety of the loneliness and distance between you and the world or risking to take the train and dream on, thats what means for me and i must say it moves me deeply. All is sadness but there is still hope.
This song inspired me to write a book. This song just captivates me, i listen to it over and over and over again and think so deeply about it's meaning. I want to express the meaning of the song through my writing, and delve into the life of the woman this song is about, :)
I adore this song, and I have for a while. But when I listened to it just now, it gave me a heartache and I don't know why ):. So beautiful... But so sad.
I think it could go either way, being sung from the point of view of a man or women. Maybe it depends more on how it relates to you. That's what's beautiful about it. It doesn't matter if the songs hetero or homosexual. It's a bittersweet song about love.
I think it could go either way, being sung from the point of view of a man or women. Maybe it depends more on how it relates to you. That's what's beautiful about it. It doesn't matter if the songs hetero or homosexual. It's a bittersweet song about love.
I absolutly hate crying over a song, and I think it's weird to do so, but for some reason, whenever I listen to this I smile and the tears just creep down my face...it's just that beautiful.
@halfmonochromy It's an amazing song, definitely, but how is it "obviously" from a man's point of view? I really can't see any cues to the gender of the narrator in the song...
@tirevan aw aw I'm sorry I don't know why I did write 'obviously' ;O; Just ignore that haha. I'm no native speaker, maybe I meant to say "probably" ahaha
@nosecrets23 It's about a woman meeting her old friend at an airport and the woman is escaping from her abusive husband. She covers it up with offhand remarks and friendliness, and the person who is singing doesn't want this lifestyle for her friend. That is how I interpret the song, anyway, and the message is even deeper then that as well.
Although it's a matter of personal perspective, I read somewhere that this song is the journey of a woman who is meeting her biological daughter for the first time since she gave her up for adoption. although I think any perspective of this song is beautiful, that's just how I've made sense of it. I think the lesbian perspective is nice as well, I just wanted to add a little more fuel to the conversations. XD
@InsomniacPie2 More sense with this perspective than with the lesbians perspective. But both of them are available. Oh and imagine there's a man who sing (:
@Rilan11 I believe that in her music, she actually has a tendency to put herself into another's body/perspective. (Ex. No Gringo from Inland Territory) In this song, she is taking on the perspective of a boy. Furthermore, I believe Vienna herself called this song a 'reverse strip-tease' in that it's a story of a relationship starting at the end and working toward the beginning.
Its obvious shes talking about a Girl. And by accident she runs into her "And I never thought I would find her here " . But , to me it looks like shes fighting with her sexuality- "And I know I don't want this,Oh, I swear I don't want this,There's a reason I don't want this,But I forgot." Its already late though, cause shes in love with the girl. Ahhh, Just read the lyrics. Its a beautiful song, with a beautiful meaning.
@Rilan11 does it matter? it's a lovely song, and there's something very pure about vienna's voice. i don't think it matters whether she's singing as a man or woman. *shrugs*
@misssilivren I think it makes a little more sense from a lesbian's perspective, as it would explain the 'And I know I don't want this; Oh, I swear I don't want this ;There's a reason I don't want this; But I forgot' lines- social pressures and the gender-confusion that could come from finding yourself of a 'deviant' orientation. Then again, I've only just discovered this song, and haven't had time to think about it. XD
This song is so beautiful. The lyrics with her voice.. it's just amazing. I love the addition of the horn. It really creates this atmosphere.. I just really like most of what I've heard by her.
I had to comment again, because I came back, and this song isn't any less beautiful.
I thought I should also say that when she gets towards the end, and starts saying "Who are you?" it's a lot like her trying to find her daughter. Just looking at her surroundings and thinking, "I have no idea who I'm looking for, but I still want to find her." and the passion in her voice makes it so beautiful.
but i see a man who is either dating/married randomly meeting his lost love in this terminal. he knows he should go but he just cant bring himself to do it. this moment with her is all he wants. something he has always hoped for.
reminds me of a quote. "the mark of a mature man is a certain scar he bears: the memory of a perfect women never won, or of a once true love forever lost. however much he may love you, he is only here because she is not"
i know she intended it as a sort of 'reverse love song', but i have always imagined it in a different light.
i see two friends in that airport, awaiting the girl's flight. he has loved her for as long as he has known her, but he has never had the courage to admit it. as he sits in the airport, her head on his shoulder, he struggles with his emotions. memories of her replay in his head as he sits there, trying to deny it all. but it is real, and as she leaves he is left only with his regrets.
I've met her, and unfortunately I was unable to produce the words to say, "You are the reason why I write music." Songs like this actually mean something, and that's why I love them. <3
The imagery in this song is fantastic. Especially the terminal scene. It's such an insignificant scene in the grand scheme of things -- just one person resting her head against another person's shoulder -- but the image remains, weeks after hearing the song, crisp as if remembered from a photograph rather than words in a song.
I can listen to this on repeat all day and never tire of it.
This song puts words to that feeling of loving somebody who didn't love you back, but looked like they would have. You love someone, and they don't have a clue, so they leave carelessly and you're left feeling stupid and forlorn.
I always imagine a story when I listen to this song. A girl, no, a young woman, seeks out her mother who gave her up for adoption. They meet, finally, and the song is pretty much what goes through their minds. "who are you, taking coffee no sugar?" because they don't know each other after so long.
The story is different sometimes, but this is generally what I feel when I listen to this.
@JarouqueXIII I love that image so much you gave me. I can't listen to this song without thinking that now. Especially when she says "And I know I don't want this. Oh I swear I don't want this. There's a reason I don't want this, but I forgot." I feel like it's the mother remembering giving up her child and she sort of says to herself "I didn't want you, and I know there was a good reason I didn't want you, but now I simply can't imagine why." Like her sort of regretting missing out on her life.
@JarouqueXIII thank you for this beautiful mental picture. Now this song isn't just sad, it's...mournful, and filled with emotion. I truly want to cry when I hear it.
She is the perfect autumn soundtrack. Her music is like a walk down a sidewalk covered with dried leaves, damp earth and a wind... scarves and light jackets... a story in every falling leaf...
I have a lot of favourite songs, but this is a different type of favourite for me. This is the only song I'm definitely going to love for my whole life - it's just so beautiful. :)
OMG I am so glad that I wasn't the only one crying when I heard this song. I mean, I'm kinda ashamed to say that i don't understand half of what this song is trying to tell me, but either way it literally moved me to tears. I absolutely love her songs.
