The processes & attitudes we require are already in place, further uptake needs to be encouraged. Fair enough. I worked in an Aussie meatworks, that had Halal accreditation & I thought we stunned all stock at that plant. Thus a significant percentage of Muslims must accept the stunning process or there wouldn't have been a market for that product. What I do know is that the process was very quick for the animal & there was little fuss or struggle. I know because I was regularly on the kill floor. I could not have continued to work there if i felt stock were being abused.

Joe Ludwig has announced today that Exporters will be responsible for the supply chain and that independent auditors will be checking on Abattoirs, at the press conference no reporters asked the real question " will the animals be stunned prior to slaughter"? So it would appear the animals will still be slaughtered "Halal" I note that Australian Vets were NOT allowed in to any Indonesian Abattoirs, I would say this was to prevent Vets speaking out against "Halal'!

DJC my point is, That livestock stunned unconscious before slaughter is still deemed acceptable by Muslim authorities & muslim markets around the world. The processes & attitudes we require are already in place, further uptake needs to be encouraged. In any group of people,there is never 100% consensus. if you look hard enough you will uncover malpractice anywhere. You cannot continue to broadly denigrate Muslims& claim to have a balanced view on this issue.

Fair enough. I worked in an Aussie meatworks, that had Halal accreditation & I thought we stunned all stock at that plant. Thus a significant percentage of Muslims must accept the stunning process or there wouldn't have been a market for that product. What I do know is that the process was very quick for the animal & there was little fuss or struggle. I know because I was regularly on the kill floor. I could not have continued to work there if i felt stock were being abused.

@ravtown The Australian June 23, 2011, At least 15 abattoirs in Australia servicing the domestic halal and kosher meat market have permission from state governments to slit the throats of fully conscious livestock.In Victoria, three abattoirs are licensed to undertake religious slaughter. As you can see real Halal means NOT stunning prior to slaughter, so if the Muslims / Jews [Kosher] won't accept stunning here what hope have you got in Indonesia? That is the problem.

@ravtown They are not just my concerns, but Yes it would, this is what the Animal welfare organizations are calling for, but in the Muslim religion you can't stun because the animal would not be able yo hear the prayer said over it while it's throat is cut, and then hung on a hook until it dies. I have read a lot in the month re Halal slaughter = NO stunning allowed! There are Halal Abattoirs in Australia at least 15 that are EXEMPT from Australian standards on Religious grounds "MUSLIM" !!!!!

If you purchase a apple & discover it is bruised, you don't assume that all apples will be bruised. We can no more assume that this horrible footage correctly represents the proper Halal slaughter process (it doesn't),nor can we assume that most cattle experience this at slaughter (they don't) nor can we assume that all Muslims & Indonesians are cruel to animals. What we can do is ask indo authorities to put safe guards in place so these practices stop. Banning live ex fixes nothing.

@ravtown Halal slaughter has been PROVEN Inhumane, Yes all Halal slaughter, The fact is that the MLA provided the "slaughter boxes" and trained the Heathens in the video, so I feel it is safe to assume that the 100 Abattoirs in Indonesia are the same if not WORSE! Muslims are cruel to animals because they practice Halal! Banning Live Export and building Abattoirs would re employ the thousands of Australians who lost their jobs, NZ banned it and never looked back!

@MO4B The cruelty in the video relates directly to the Muslim faith as Islam demands "Halal" slaughter, where an animal must be positioned to face Mecca, NO stun gun, fully conscious [so it can hear a Muslin prayer] it's throat is cut, it's then hung on a hook by it's leg until it dies in agony. That is what Muslims do! There is NO point in "improving" facilities as what we see in the video was set up by MLA and workers trained by then too!
