The Rudolph Hess story was very interesting, especially with Donald Sutherland telling the tale to us. Proves an interesting take on the "power of one man in the right place at the right time."
That thing about a barbecue, In South Vietnam when the U.S. set up Diem as president in protest some monks set themselves on fire, diems wife Madam nhu was quoted to say "If the Buddhists want to have another barbecue, I will be glad to supply the gasoline."
"When Junior cracked down, Thorn's group turned to violence. Or maybe it was the other way around" I also liked the way Thorn rationalized the killing of innocent bystanders. As if to imply that anyone who is not supporting his "cause" doesn't deserve to live.People who live in countries like this always get caught between the government of the day and the 'revolutionaries' who think they should have the power. Thorn is already showing signs of being a corrupt power hungry tyrant in the making.
"Personally I preferred terrorist groups that sounded like rock bands like Black September, Action Direct, Red Army Faction. I also like the Weathermen, back when they had their original drummer." Classic
President Johnson used to make his aide meet in the bathroom while he was on the john, but he would tear them apart if they ever once requested a bathroom blank even during a 10 or 12 hour day! You have to love what people (or bullies) do with their power!
Johnson also had all of the partitions in Air Force One replaced with plexiglass ones. He wanted to be visible to all passengers at all times. Such a gregarious fellow that guy was. One of my favorite scenes in 'The Right Stuff' was when Senator (or was it Congressman) Johnson threw a temper tantrum in his limo when John Glen's wife refused to make a television appearance with him. "Isn't there anyone who can deal with a G#@ D@#mned housewife!?"

I like this, this is one of the first films that shows the reality of a modern day dictatorship.

And that's why it garnered little success or acclaim.
Christ Donald Sutherland should have won the Oscar for this one.

Does anyone know the book that Joe is reading at 9:30? Or the music playing in the background right before that scene?
