That's because American Idol has strayed far away from a singing competition and into something else. Rather than showcasing vocal ability, its all about entertaining. I know Simon thinks showing vocal ability is nothing more than Karaoke, but on the contrary, most Karaoke is not about showing off your singing talent, its about showing stage presence. If you see a lot of Karaoke, you'll know Simon has it backwards.
