I had a similar problem with my 21.5-inch: 3.06GHz. I used it for a couple of weeks and it would heat way too much. The fans would go on when it was cold and won't turn on when it was hot. The programs would constantly crash. I ended up returning it. I waited for a month and bought another one and it has the same issue. It is not capable of running Garageband with out crashing. My old intel G5 has been doing a better job. I think I am going to have to return it again. :-(
Update: I pickup my iMac today from MacMedia and I'm proud to say after about 1 1/2 running, I haven't heard a single fan noise. istat shows everything running normally. To Mark at MacMedia in Scottsdale: "WAY TO GO MAN!!"
Thank You So Much for working on my cooling issue.
I had the same issue with my 24" intel iMac. The guys a my local MacMedia was able to solve it for me. Hey man no need to worry, they will take care of the issue. As far a Apple Genus goes those guys and gals can only take the time that they have from one machine to the next by customer related issue.
Update: Cancel pickup, received a call from the tech there. It seems my issue is still present. Looks like my investment is starting to become a pain in the rear. I had a 24" iMac that I sold cheap to a friend last month, I regret that now. Let's see where this leads. Last bad taste was a iBook I had, but since then I made sure I brought new. Hell I still have my box for this iMac!! Can you say LEMON hopefully not. I have faith in the wonderful guys at MacMedia.
Update: I was told by MacMedia that new graphics card was installed to resolve cooling issue. I've taken a screen shoot of the orginal serial number. I hope it's not smoke, heading there now to pickup. I will update once I run a check on the serial to the replacement graphics card
Get a real PC.
Install Linux in it and have FULL control of your machine.
Now, about the software...
