i was born in the 90s but i have a father who listen and loves music from his childhood back in the 60s. and that has maked me a big fan of REAL music;D all that teckno ompf the young people listn to today is crap there is no feeling to it. i am just happy that my father saved me from the new by playing the old and the good :D
I remember dad playing this when I was a little girl, sitting by the kitchen table doing my homework. Today it's the only song that can really calm me, and it helps me study better like it did back then.
Anyone who says this isn't music don't really know what real music is.
@futureofmusiclives While Paul Simon was the genius behind this composition and almost all the songs of Simon and Garfunkel, Artie's vocals added so much to these songs.
Can anyone else hear a little bitt of Stone Roses? suppose you'd have to be a roses fan to have noticed really. I reckon Ian Brown might've been an S&G fan ; )
I must admit that this song was in the ash heap of my history until I heard it on a car commercial. Then, all the memories of the song's brilliance came back to me. Thank you, Acura, but I hate you.
I remember being a child and laying in bed listening to my dad play this song and feeling so safe. It will always make me think of him and happiness...
I don't know how long I'm gonna cope with the adverts before the videos... they are killing the key point of You Tube... something different I'll need to find ;)
@ignafm totally agree about the commercials before songs. isn't the increased amount of time being used on TV for commercials enough for these marketing dickheads without spoiling You Tube by trying to sell us useless tat we don't need?
Wasn't a fan until Garden State and Zac the Braf turned me on to this. Funny thing is I don't even like his scrubs stuff, but that movie was great and the sound track well, what can we say to that! Marvelous! Here I AM!
I don't know if they layered S&G's harmonies, or if it is in fact a gospel choir..But it makes the song. Very haunting. And the church organ nearing the end of the song...A masterpiece. What happened to music like this? It honestly seems as if popular music has regressed ( "is that a word?" ) over the last 30 years or so. No real infushion since the new wave, punk era of the early eighties....Enough with the waxing..Just a great song, one of S&G's most under rated.
@1sttvbn In fact they did layer their voices. They were in the echo chamber in a LA studio, stood in the chamber and recorded the parts over and over. Something like twelve voices total! It makes the song...Beautiful work!...
I listened to this song over and over back in the summer of 1972, when I was fourteen. It's still an absurdly great song. "Half of the time we're gone, and we don't know where." Ain't it the truth? Or perhaps it's only a half truth. Perhaps we're always gone, and we never know where. Still, a few people set up beacons in the dark, and we struggle toward them.
@DavidfromBA Thanks, DavidfromBA. I've learned only a few things in my life. I've learned that true sorrow never entirely dissipates. I've learned that all of us are lost in various darknesses and that we're all struggling toward some truth, some light. I've learned that the best of us know that they're struggling. And, because I don't and won't count myself among the best, I've learned that some of us who are simply struggling know and appreciate the efforts of others. I wish that I knew more.
i have very fond memories of this as a child half asleep on the back shelf of a 1968 sunbeam rapier fastfack touring the beatifull highlands of scotland, dont eva remba feeling betta ,listen to that bass !
This song is about Simon feeling sad because they knew this was their last album together, Garfunkel was embarking on his movie career. He was on his way to film "Catch 22" in Sonaro, Mexico. Sadly, his movie career didnt really take off.

Simon and Garfunkel must be the greatest bromance of all time. And this is the greatest hymn to it. Good on ya boys! These songs will live forever.
