  • Can I use Intel's SRT with a Intel Lynnfield Core i7-870 processor? I have a msi motherboard model # MS-7588. P55M-SD40

  • Nice video and nice to know that information.

  • There won't be any difference with the performance through certain HDD benchmark programs because they're not using the cached data on the SSD.

  • POTATO CHIPPER!

  • This is so flawed. Why would you compare one of the slowest drives (5400rpm) to the performance of a hybrid? The alternative to a SSD is a 7200rpm drive, not a 5400.

Also, all these benchmarks are synthetic and not real world so their numbers are worthless. How about timing boot & load times with programs ,response times?

Most helpful would be a price comparison of this XHD option to the obviously superior SSD only option b/c the z68 chipset costs $80+ more than a p67 one. IMO just get a SSD.

  • @motherboardsorg . nice video. i have a question. do i have to use the ( Intel 311 SSD ) or can i use the ( Agility 3 120GB SATA 6Gb/s 2.5" Solid State Drive (SSD) with SandForce 2281 Controller ) and which SSD will give me better performance when used with (Caviar Black 1TB 7,200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive WD1002FAEX - OEM). thank you forward.

  • does this work on xp 64?

  • Loading Operation system..............

  • Hi Nice Video! Now i Have a Few Questions. First i Have a Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD4-B3 Main board and i Have XHD Option in The Bios, Those That Mean i Have Smart Response Technology on my P67 Board?

If Yes Can i Add an SSD Like You Did Aldo i Have Like 3 HDD`s Already? Thanks

  • The most important idea IMO: Instead of spending $50 on 8gb memory, spend $65 for a 64 GB. SSD. You get more for the money AND have a SSD for a laptop=more options! Why doesn't anybody talk about this important aspect of upgrading? It seems obvious when I had to decide on how to improve performance on a budget. My 8 gigs of ram is plenty w/ a 64gb smart response system!!!

  • dont you have to change to RAID in bios BEFORE installing windows?

  • @addeffects YES! You MUST set to RAID before installing Win 7. Why doesn't any review state this critical step? I have to re-install OS since I originally installed with IDE mode in bios (so if I just change to RAID, I get BSOD when booting up). Luckily, it won't be too time consuming.

  • @shawnspeed3 hey but now i have my pc. how I did it:

unplug SSD. set sata thingy to RAID. restart, install windows, plug back in my SSD, installed RST software from mb cd. activated accelerate.

I think it works fine, I mean new pc so it all goes fast, but 1 problem where I need some help with.

when I boot my pc, it kinda repeats 3 times. first time you see mb logo, then it kinda loads something, goes back to mb logo, loads again and says no hard disk detected!

and then once again it boots.

  • @shawnspeed3 out of characters lol, I did see the screen like on 2:39.

and second time it boots it says no hard detected on AHCI-mode:

AHCI-mode: no harddisk detected! then reboot, then it shows 2:39.

why is it still showing this? everything thats on 2:39 is the same as on my pc.

  • If the RAID "broke down" would i lose all my data?

  • do more adderol

  • If i want to use the srt.. does the speed of the hdd matter? like will 7200rpm hdd with 60gb ssd be faster than a 5900rpm with 60gbssd?

  • Is there a difference in performance between a 60gb ssd against a 20gb ssd in this technology?

  • im getting a 120gb tomorrow when post comes i guess i cant use ISRT with that?

  • Guys, we know he doesn't blink or that he should stop moving his hands or that he said HXD. But give this man some credit, this is actually one of the mroe useful guides on the internet.

  • According to the Intel manual, it's possible to combine SRT with a HDD or a raid array. What is it?

  • any way you can do a raid 0 config to compare to the srt and ssd only performance?

  • Lol, haha....thats cool

  • cab you do this in a laptop???

  • does death metal really go with pc tech ?

  • @rexaroco Yes... Yes it does.

  • stop moving your hands.

  • Comment removed

  • @Fr3dzSTER lol thank you

  • @xSKOOBSx he is moving his hand because he is a singer n he is learning rap .

  • I have an 120gb SSD, can I still use that as a normal drive and partition only 20gb of it for SRT?

  • @iagher my motherboard manual says that it is reserved for cache only, so i guess not...

  • SRT or RAID 0?

  • Does the performance decrease in the bigger hdd u use for example will it work the same with 3tb hdd as it would with a 1tb

  • He never blinks his eyes.

  • @Fr3dzSTER Yeah!!!!!!! I didn't notice it. Sorry

  • hey anyone, which is better, ssd+hhd using smart response or ssd for os and hard drive for storage?.THANK YOU

  • dyslexia

  • can someone tell me if i need that in my computer because im making one cyberpowerpc and i need to know if its needed or its not needed

  • @qwrfg depends on your uses and how big of a cyberdick you want. faster program and boot speeds, but no real performance in render-times or gaming performance (other than loading times...). But, it is a nice thing to have.

  • Ok question. How in the hell do I set up RAID in the ASUS Z68 EFI BIOS? I go to advanced, and don't see anywhere to set up a RAID.

  • if you using a asus board make sure u install your os on raid mode, or else it wont boot up later on.

    asus p8z68 v pro

    i7 2600

    seagate 1tb hdd

    kingstin 64gb ssd

  • Can i install windows 7 on 64gb ssd and then use leftover space for cache.

    using gigabyte z68-ud5-b3 mobo

  • did he say H X D ?? . . twice ?

  • I have a P8Z68-V motherboard and when i go in to intel rapid storage technology it doesnt have the acceration screen :/ Please help :(

  • @KSITREVS Try downloading the most recent one from intel's website and see if that helps.

  • Good review, then the music kicked in and my face melted.

    What band is this?

  • HXD.... hard Xtreme drive

  • I don't think it would be pointless with a 120 gb ssd for booting and games + a 1tb or 2tb hd with and 64 gb ssd in srt-mode for quick access to all your other stuff, that would be kind of optimal I think... (SInce you can't get a 1tb ssd anyway).

  • Is it possible to purchase a 120 GB SSD, set it as the boot drive, and then partition off 20-40 GBs for SRTing another HDD?

  • what if this was used on a hybrid hard drive?

  • If i have an existing running system (with a z68 board) can i just go out and buy a 60GB SSD, plug it in via power and SATA III port, open up Intel Smart Response and thats done? Or do i need to change any BIOS settings or format my HDD or anything like that? (When i add the SSD will i lose any data or my OS)?

  • the "HXD" lol.

  • @TheChristman86

    "RST", even

  • Looking at the test graphs, wouldn't it be better to just have OS/programs on a SSD and have HDD for storage?

  • @daigoji83 ya but im going all ssd and use a external drive for storage

  • @daigoji83 lets say your a gamer like me and i have almost 300gb of game files. That wont fit on a 64gb ssd.... If you want your games to load faster your going to want that SRT.

  • Comment removed

  • can this work with an amd build

  • Is the SSD running off a SATA 3?

  • @BrokenTomahawk

That's what I want to know, but judging by the SSD he's holding in his hand, I'd say no. SATA II.

I want to know how much faster SRT would be with a SATA III SSD.

  • @bishoplord same question here, I'm about to buy the force 3 60go from corsair and its sata3....

  • @bishoplord

as of right now the SRT only works with the SATA2 ports.

i am building a computer for a friend of mine and we decided for her purposes that a 64GB SSD SATA3 ($95 at an egg site) boot drive with a mechanical SATA3 HDD is the best combination.

  • @ezerich

Thanks for the info. This is good to know. I think I'm going to hold off SSD for now. It's much faster loading apps and start up, but overall, with my new i7 2600k, it's already pretty darn fast enough as it is. I only needed this CPU upgrade to speed up the video conversion and make my 3D movies play & games to play smoothly (as opposed to choppy with a OC'd q9300). With the 2600k, my graphic cards are no longer an issue. SLI is practically overkill now with my setup.

  • @BrokenTomahawk

    At 04:53, it shows that it's a Kingston 128GB V+ Series at 222 MB/s. SATA II.

  • Seems like the sme performance as a VelociRaptor...

  • I want to setup the SRT on an ASUS Z8P68-V Pro. I cant find proper documentation for the process. All I can gather is that I have to enable Raid mode and install OS on the spinning drive.

    1) But which RAID should I choose? 0,1,5,10 etc?

    2) Can I create partitions on my spinning drive and install the OS on one partition?

    3) Do I need to do anything else in BIOS?

Once I get to Windows I guess its relatively easy from there.

    Help appreciated !

  • awesome video

  • sorry if this has already been asked, do you have to commit the entire SSD to STR of can you partition the SSD and only use part of it to speed up your normal HDD?

  • @Trustmeitsworthit According to Intel's instruction PDF only the first 64 GBs will be used and the rest can be used for storage.

  • It basically creates a "HYBRID" style drive like the Seagate Momentus XT. Standard hard drive with SSD as cache.

  • Does it have to be a 1tb drive?

  • I guess it basically uses the SSD drive as a "secondary simulated ram thingy" :P, good to know, i still rather using a main SSD drive with the OS and maybe your main games, if you play too many games to fit on the SSD just transfer folders from 1 HD to the other, but some people might find it too much work heh but i think its worth it and i would do it. Nice videos, ill follow. Subscribed.

  • The music at the results intense O.O

  • pretty slow to boot;S mine much faster and its pretty lower end computer compared to that same win.7

  • can't you just use the ssd's instead of the mixture of hdd and sdd

  • Do you think OCZ Vertex 2 40GB is a better value since it's faster and cheaper than Intel 311 SSDs ?

  • would this work on my P67A-UD4-B3? i might actually consider getting a 20 GB ssd

  • Hi did u means i can use any brand of ssd to run SRT ??

  • XHD not HXD

  • press 6 for chicken

  • Oh mr, you got the same monitor as i do. I love that Monitor <3

  • He should be rapper with his gestures xD

  • in on secret rep trade thread

  • LOL! Whos got SSD just lying around unused. :D

  • Well SEAGATE has it in its hybrid drive. But hey its an INTEL they can do whatever they want.

  • 1tb yay

  • So you're saying you can't boot up the OS on one ssd and have another ssd for SRT?

  • @FloppyDickNation You could but it would be pointless...

  • @motherboardsorg Can you further explain why?

  • @motherboardsorg wait so you can use a 30gb ssd as a boot drive than use rest of the 5 gigs as cache for your hdd?

  • @FloppyDickNation you dont want to do that. raid the two ssd's.

  • @motherboardsorg ive been told by many professionals that sense SSDs are so new to the market and not perfect that they are like twice as likely to fail as a normal HDD

  • why do you slam the enter key like there's no tomorrow?! xD

  • quite effective

  • so you install the os like regular on the HD, then attach and config the SSd in bios and that's it? anything special have to be done to the SSD? also can you use the space, or see the space on the ssd?

  • Why test a 1TB 5400 RPM drive.... Just slap in a 500GB 7200 at least this really doesn't help!

  • Gigabyte has had this for years, it's on my P55A-UD4P, this isn't SRT it's gigabyte XHD tech.

  • ban stick niggaz

  • @stetdawg saying nigga at a geek conference is like trying to discuss the laws of physics in a gangster convention

  • @sexking83 hahahahaha <3

  • great vid, informative, and easy to understand.

  • can you just install windows on say the main drive...then boot and set it to raid with a blank ssd drive and it works automatically ? or do you install windows on the ssd drive first

  • Awesome!!!!!!

  • wtf.. new? this has been on my gigabyte motherboard for some time now.. I dint know what it did till now though thanks.

  • Dude twice you said (HXD) instead of (XHD) while in the bios showing 1."eXtreme Hard Drive" and 2. "PCH SATA Control Mode" in the video small thing but just wanted to point it out to you. Other then that it was done very well!!!!

  • Man, I was waiting for you to turn around and play something sinister on that keyboard. Like a Herbie Hancock or Yanni cover :p

  • hey what's the monitor you were using? and how much inches? please reply motherboardsorg

  • Cool technology by Intel but I think most Gamers would prefer a SSD as a single boot drive...

  • i like this review..

  • awesome technology for those who can't afford big SSDs right now.

  • i like it:D

  • I gotto get myself an ssd while the currencies are devaluing

  • great video. But you still using IE8. Have you heard of internet explorer 9? It is a fast, stable and secure browser, try it!

  • why BIOS? wheres the EFI interface??

  • if the ssd would fail, would you lose data?

  • @BurnedMurloc Yes, but must ssd's do not fail because there are no moving parts and they just have a longer lifespan, which is about 1000 000 hours = 114 years ;)

  • @BurnedMurloc SSDs rarely fail.

  • @motherboardsorg Hmmh, a person I know from college [UK], didn't have an SSD for very long. It was a 2.5." 180GB Corsair [SF-12xx] (I think it was 180GB) and was in his MacBook (standard) 13" UniBody. After a while it suddenly began operating slowly. It didn't exactly fail, but he sent it off to Corsair and is still awaiting a replacement. Not sure what was wrong...

  • @motherboardsorg

i heard green drives have a high rate of failure, i was going to get one because of the the silence. is this true? O_o

  • @iEatpottato Somewhat, get a WD hard drive, Seagtae has been failing the past years.

Main difference between green and regular drives, are that green drives usually run at 5400 RPM instead of the "norm" 7200 RPM.

  • @motherboardsorg Do they? I'm confused at this point, because some people say, that they fail rarely, but others - that they fail often. For example Jeff Atwood on codinghorror(dot)com wrote a blog post on that, and he wrote, that most of them didn't hold up even for a year!

  • @motherboardsorg mine did.....

  • @motherboardsorg false and does not address the question

  • @motherboardsorg You still didn't answer question, though... I do agree they do rarely fail. But they have a lifespan, so, it is feasible that one fails.

  • @BurnedMurloc but when they do, ure screwed!

  • @BurnedMurloc If a HD would fail, would you lose data?

  • @madworldbestsong ofc you would, my question is more, if the SSD is used for pure caching only you wouldn't lose too much data but I am wondering: iF the ssd is storing something else apart from cached data.

  • @BurnedMurloc By my statement is, of course you would lose data, but like motherboardsorg said, SSDs hardly fail.

  • can someone tell me the songs name?.

  • HXE or XHE?

  • Instead of buying a new MB, just get a Vertex 3 or some other 2nd gen SSD and get 500mb/s...

  • Why would I buy a SSD and a HDD to run in SRT. Raid setup on 7200rpm WD blue drives had better scores and cheaper? Is it just me or does it sound like a hot puff of AIR!

  • No your mistaken at 1:58 it says RAID XHD not HXD

not that i want to write XD for nothing..

  • It seams slow anyways

  • you're saying it wrong it's not "HXD" it's

    'XHD"

  • music in benchmarcks

  • his hands keeps moving, not like in the other videos

  • just 674 views wtf ?

  • You said a while back you would have a 6970 crossfire vs 580 sli comparison but its still not up. Are you going to be making it? if not, which do you think is it better? also since 6970 is pretty cheap, would the 6970 in tri crossfire out preform the 580 sli? If tri crossfire is even possible.

  • @TacosWillEatUs linus tech tips did it...

  • Aww man....too much brightness :-(

  • do you have to use an intel ssd or can you use any brand of ssd.

  • lol reminds me of the SRT8.

  • 1:40 i heard "eat the delet key" :|

  • wait the whats up with the bios its ment to be UEFI or EFI

  • @Dushan241096 no its not... gigabyte decided not to use it

  • im sorry, father, for what ive sinned against you

  • Man you cant use a caviar green as boot drive.....

  • It seems like somebody may be a little dyslexic. You kept calling it the HXD, when it says right there on the screen XHD.

  • gaben...No. GAYBEN.. YES!

  • L what about access time !!

    plzzzz like this comment

  • Move your hand more please!

  • Its totally pointless to show the sequential read, unless you're just moving large files around. What matters and are most realistic is the random 4k reads. So all the little files that make up the system and software are what a random 4k reads would be testing. THAT is the most important benchmark in SSD's. And should definitely be mentioned. Don't believe me? Well that just means you haven't done homework.

  • @ILOVEKATIE96 definitely agreed..I have to remind people of this ( especially the particular fanboys of a company brand name). they think " oh wow this product costs blah..and it can read 285 megs per sec and write 275" they get the product home. the use a stop watch to test click drag copying a file of 1 gig in size. it takes longer than 8 seconds. they think " wait a minute this is more like 175 megs per sec. " they dont do their research and just settle for the " eye candy specs"

  • @ILOVEKATIE96 I totaly agree with you. It's not the continuous or maximum read/write speed wich makes the difference between an SSD and an HDD - it's the RANDOM reads. Most people don't get it. So as long I don't see the random reads performance of this setup, I won't buy it.

  • SSD is still very expensive, perhaps this way they, can sell more units SSD.

Should be analyzed carefully, the cost / benefits.

  • This is pretty decent, although I'd rather get better speeds and use an SSD as a boot drive, instead of this hybrid method.. And anyway you need Z68 motherboard =/, some of us have already upgraded to a P67..

  • Intel 311(Larson Creek) series drives are not available for sale yet, any idea when they will be available for sale?

  • I'm not sure I understand... Let's say I have a 1 TB HDD and I get the SRT, do I have to have an SSD as well, or does the HDD just get improved by itself, or...? What am I missing?

  • @ZeGuyFly SSD improves the HDD's performance

  • what test bench is that i like it

  • RAID 0 will give you better performance right?
