Question here: I'm looking to buy an SSD, but I'm also looking to dual boot my machine with OS X. Could I partition a 120gb into 60/60, and install OS X on one partition, and have the second partition use SRT while in Windows 7 on the other partition? Thanks
This is so flawed. Why would you compare one of the slowest drives (5400rpm) to the performance of a hybrid? The alternative to a SSD is a 7200rpm drive, not a 5400.
Also, all these benchmarks are synthetic and not real world so their numbers are worthless. How about timing boot & load times with programs ,response times?
Most helpful would be a price comparison of this XHD option to the obviously superior SSD only option b/c the z68 chipset costs $80+ more than a p67 one. IMO just get a SSD.
@motherboardsorg . nice video. i have a question. do i have to use the ( Intel 311 SSD ) or can i use the ( Agility 3 120GB SATA 6Gb/s 2.5" Solid State Drive (SSD) with SandForce 2281 Controller ) and which SSD will give me better performance when used with (Caviar Black 1TB 7,200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive WD1002FAEX - OEM). thank you forward.
Hi Nice Video! Now i Have a Few Questions. First i Have a Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD4-B3 Main board and i Have XHD Option in The Bios, Those That Mean i Have Smart Response Technology on my P67 Board?
If Yes Can i Add an SSD Like You Did Aldo i Have Like 3 HDD`s Already? Thanks
The most important idea IMO: Instead of spending $50 on 8gb memory, spend $65 for a 64 GB. SSD. You get more for the money AND have a SSD for a laptop=more options! Why doesn't anybody talk about this important aspect of upgrading? It seems obvious when I had to decide on how to improve performance on a budget. My 8 gigs of ram is plenty w/ a 64gb smart response system!!!
@addeffects YES! You MUST set to RAID before installing Win 7. Why doesn't any review state this critical step? I have to re-install OS since I originally installed with IDE mode in bios (so if I just change to RAID, I get BSOD when booting up). Luckily, it won't be too time consuming.
@shawnspeed3 hey but now i have my pc. how I did it:
unplug SSD. set sata thingy to RAID. restart, install windows, plug back in my SSD, installed RST software from mb cd. activated accelerate.
I think it works fine, I mean new pc so it all goes fast, but 1 problem where I need some help with.
when I boot my pc, it kinda repeats 3 times. first time you see mb logo, then it kinda loads something, goes back to mb logo, loads again and says no hard disk detected!
Guys, we know he doesn't blink or that he should stop moving his hands or that he said HXD. But give this man some credit, this is actually one of the mroe useful guides on the internet.
@qwrfg depends on your uses and how big of a cyberdick you want. faster program and boot speeds, but no real performance in render-times or gaming performance (other than loading times...). But, it is a nice thing to have.
I don't think it would be pointless with a 120 gb ssd for booting and games + a 1tb or 2tb hd with and 64 gb ssd in srt-mode for quick access to all your other stuff, that would be kind of optimal I think... (SInce you can't get a 1tb ssd anyway).
If i have an existing running system (with a z68 board) can i just go out and buy a 60GB SSD, plug it in via power and SATA III port, open up Intel Smart Response and thats done? Or do i need to change any BIOS settings or format my HDD or anything like that? (When i add the SSD will i lose any data or my OS)?
@daigoji83 lets say your a gamer like me and i have almost 300gb of game files. That wont fit on a 64gb ssd.... If you want your games to load faster your going to want that SRT.
hi guys can i use the SRT without using it to install the OS? example I have OCZvertex3 = OS windows 7 then my Westerndigital+Intel 311 (SRT mode) = just for files, games, etc. not for OS win7. Can I implement this kind of approach? tnx in advance
as of right now the SRT only works with the SATA2 ports.
i am building a computer for a friend of mine and we decided for her purposes that a 64GB SSD SATA3 ($95 at an egg site) boot drive with a mechanical SATA3 HDD is the best combination.
Thanks for the info. This is good to know. I think I'm going to hold off SSD for now. It's much faster loading apps and start up, but overall, with my new i7 2600k, it's already pretty darn fast enough as it is. I only needed this CPU upgrade to speed up the video conversion and make my 3D movies play & games to play smoothly (as opposed to choppy with a OC'd q9300). With the 2600k, my graphic cards are no longer an issue. SLI is practically overkill now with my setup.
I want to setup the SRT on an ASUS Z8P68-V Pro. I cant find proper documentation for the process. All I can gather is that I have to enable Raid mode and install OS on the spinning drive.
1) But which RAID should I choose? 0,1,5,10 etc?
2) Can I create partitions on my spinning drive and install the OS on one partition?
3) Do I need to do anything else in BIOS?
Once I get to Windows I guess its relatively easy from there.
sorry if this has already been asked, do you have to commit the entire SSD to STR of can you partition the SSD and only use part of it to speed up your normal HDD?
I guess it basically uses the SSD drive as a "secondary simulated ram thingy" :P, good to know, i still rather using a main SSD drive with the OS and maybe your main games, if you play too many games to fit on the SSD just transfer folders from 1 HD to the other, but some people might find it too much work heh but i think its worth it and i would do it. Nice videos, ill follow. Subscribed.
@motherboardsorg ive been told by many professionals that sense SSDs are so new to the market and not perfect that they are like twice as likely to fail as a normal HDD
so you install the os like regular on the HD, then attach and config the SSd in bios and that's it? anything special have to be done to the SSD? also can you use the space, or see the space on the ssd?
can you just install windows on say the main drive...then boot and set it to raid with a blank ssd drive and it works automatically ? or do you install windows on the ssd drive first
Dude twice you said (HXD) instead of (XHD) while in the bios showing 1."eXtreme Hard Drive" and 2. "PCH SATA Control Mode" in the video small thing but just wanted to point it out to you. Other then that it was done very well!!!!
@BurnedMurloc Yes, but must ssd's do not fail because there are no moving parts and they just have a longer lifespan, which is about 1000 000 hours = 114 years ;)
@motherboardsorg Hmmh, a person I know from college [UK], didn't have an SSD for very long. It was a 2.5." 180GB Corsair [SF-12xx] (I think it was 180GB) and was in his MacBook (standard) 13" UniBody. After a while it suddenly began operating slowly. It didn't exactly fail, but he sent it off to Corsair and is still awaiting a replacement. Not sure what was wrong...
@motherboardsorg Do they? I'm confused at this point, because some people say, that they fail rarely, but others - that they fail often. For example Jeff Atwood on codinghorror(dot)com wrote a blog post on that, and he wrote, that most of them didn't hold up even for a year!
@motherboardsorg You still didn't answer question, though... I do agree they do rarely fail. But they have a lifespan, so, it is feasible that one fails.
@madworldbestsong ofc you would, my question is more, if the SSD is used for pure caching only you wouldn't lose too much data but I am wondering: iF the ssd is storing something else apart from cached data.
Why would I buy a SSD and a HDD to run in SRT. Raid setup on 7200rpm WD blue drives had better scores and cheaper? Is it just me or does it sound like a hot puff of AIR!
You said a while back you would have a 6970 crossfire vs 580 sli comparison but its still not up. Are you going to be making it? if not, which do you think is it better? also since 6970 is pretty cheap, would the 6970 in tri crossfire out preform the 580 sli? If tri crossfire is even possible.
Its totally pointless to show the sequential read, unless you're just moving large files around. What matters and are most realistic is the random 4k reads. So all the little files that make up the system and software are what a random 4k reads would be testing. THAT is the most important benchmark in SSD's. And should definitely be mentioned. Don't believe me? Well that just means you haven't done homework.
@ILOVEKATIE96 definitely agreed..I have to remind people of this ( especially the particular fanboys of a company brand name). they think " oh wow this product costs blah..and it can read 285 megs per sec and write 275" they get the product home. the use a stop watch to test click drag copying a file of 1 gig in size. it takes longer than 8 seconds. they think " wait a minute this is more like 175 megs per sec. " they dont do their research and just settle for the " eye candy specs"
@ILOVEKATIE96 I totaly agree with you. It's not the continuous or maximum read/write speed wich makes the difference between an SSD and an HDD - it's the RANDOM reads. Most people don't get it. So as long I don't see the random reads performance of this setup, I won't buy it.
This is pretty decent, although I'd rather get better speeds and use an SSD as a boot drive, instead of this hybrid method.. And anyway you need Z68 motherboard =/, some of us have already upgraded to a P67..
I'm not sure I understand... Let's say I have a 1 TB HDD and I get the SRT, do I have to have an SSD as well, or does the HDD just get improved by itself, or...? What am I missing?
Can I use Intel's SRT with a Intel Lynnfield Core i7-870 processor? I have a msi motherboard model # MS-7588. P55M-SD40

There won't be any difference with the performance through certain HDD benchmark programs because they're not using the cached data on the SSD.

@motherboardsorg Do they? I'm confused at this point, because some people say, that they fail rarely, but others - that they fail often. For example Jeff Atwood on codinghorror(dot)com wrote a blog post on that, and he wrote, that most of them didn't hold up even for a year!

@motherboardsorg false and does not address the question

@motherboardsorg You still didn't answer question, though... I do agree they do rarely fail. But they have a lifespan, so, it is feasible that one fails.

@BurnedMurloc but when they do, ure screwed!

@BurnedMurloc If a HD would fail, would you lose data?
madworldbestsong 9 months ago
@madworldbestsong ofc you would, my question is more, if the SSD is used for pure caching only you wouldn't lose too much data but I am wondering: iF the ssd is storing something else apart from cached data.
BurnedMurloc 9 months ago
@BurnedMurloc By my statement is, of course you would lose data, but like motherboardsorg said, SSDs hardly fail.

Instead of buying a new MB, just get a Vertex 3 or some other 2nd gen SSD and get 500mb/s...
costescuandrei1975 9 months ago
Why would I buy a SSD and a HDD to run in SRT. Raid setup on 7200rpm WD blue drives had better scores and cheaper? Is it just me or does it sound like a hot puff of AIR!

No your mistaken at 1:58 it says RAID XHD not HXD
not that i want to write XD for nothing..

It seems like somebody may be a little dyslexic. You kept calling it the HXD, when it says right there on the screen XHD.

ILOVEKATIE96 9 months ago 3
@ILOVEKATIE96 definitely agreed..I have to remind people of this ( especially the particular fanboys of a company brand name). they think " oh wow this product costs blah..and it can read 285 megs per sec and write 275" they get the product home. the use a stop watch to test click drag copying a file of 1 gig in size. it takes longer than 8 seconds. they think " wait a minute this is more like 175 megs per sec. " they dont do their research and just settle for the " eye candy specs"
chronofusion 9 months ago
@ILOVEKATIE96 I totaly agree with you. It's not the continuous or maximum read/write speed wich makes the difference between an SSD and an HDD - it's the RANDOM reads. Most people don't get it. So as long I don't see the random reads performance of this setup, I won't buy it.
ionelum 9 months ago
SSD is still very expensive, perhaps this way they, can sell more units SSD.
Should be analyzed carefully, the cost / benefits.
SrFoxAdm 9 months ago
This is pretty decent, although I'd rather get better speeds and use an SSD as a boot drive, instead of this hybrid method.. And anyway you need Z68 motherboard =/, some of us have already upgraded to a P67..

1986Chaitanya 9 months ago
I'm not sure I understand... Let's say I have a 1 TB HDD and I get the SRT, do I have to have an SSD as well, or does the HDD just get improved by itself, or...? What am I missing?
