for everyone who doesnt get why her release is so short, its because thats when the puddle behind her blades is at the point where its closing in on the blade. she releases when she does because she cant continue the same handle speed through what would be the rest of the stroke and if she did make it longer it would be a sloppy release that would slow the boat at its peak speed. it also lets her depend more on the larger muscle groups that are much more efficient
The reason she is faster than others is because she sets the blade on time, she certainly has boat moving skill. Could she have gone faster, certainly.
The most idiotic of comments is "she's fast, so don't speak of her technique you idiots". Yes I know she's a world class sculler; yet she could square earlier and catch better (the splash towards stern is telling). Ah, and she pulls low at the end too, although this is common nowadays. The leg push by contrast is very good and yes, she's very smooth for the rating.
I can't believe some of the idiotic comments here. The first time I saw Michelle row, I picked her to medal in 2008. She had an extremely efficient and smooth stroke. Watch the race in real time.
@DJCMeista haha bro, that 'washout' is the splash from the catch. And mate, even if she was washing out, she's winning and she can probably outscull you, so don't be so quick to get your keyboard warrior on
@everyone, remember that this is in slo-mo. In actual time she would probably be rating +30 or even +40. At that rate it's a lot harder to maintain *perfect* technique. And besides; it seems to be working for her
@DJCMeista You gotta remember, at that competition level, the rating she's at is probably insane. I'm sure that she NEEDS to drop the hands early just to be ABLE to get them around at the finish...
@mtcrow89 maybe that is ok...i think maybe you shouldn't bring your hands all the way back...se my rowing technique on the erg..i put the arms all the way and my chain starts going wild...I must be doing something wrong.

(ah, and I fully subscribe to Xeno's comment, as usual.... Katrin Rutschow in Athens was a real model of technique.)

she has terrible technique

She might be good but her technique is still not perfect. The sculls also leave the water a little bit too early.

On both the drive and recovery, her hands are coming over her knees while her albows re still bent. This looks really messy to me.

Katherin Rutschow-Stomporofski who won the Olympic gold in 2004 is the one to emulate.

she does not bring her hands all the way threw her body.
