They actually did finish shooting this ending. Geffen has been keeping the completed one, trying to get it released for years. But things are looking up, if the MPAA website is to be believed, Little Shop of Horrors: The Intended Cut will be released sometime this year, hopefully with a few missing verses from a couple of songs will be included to (you know, the verses where Seymore is singing as the Dentist dies and his moral debate in The Meek Shall Inherit).
Even though this was not done in color because they did not use it. they should have left it in color anyway. just make it more systematic with the rest of the movie.

I kinda feel both endings were somewhat similar. On the other ending, noticed a Venus Flytrap by Seymour and Audreys garden? It has to be a foreshadowing that it will end similar to this ending.
ending kind of sucked but i have to afree with the top comment seymore should not have gotten the happy ending he did sell his soul for fame and fortune but no way he could have known the plant's true intentions, like any one else he did what he needed to do to survive and keep his lively hood going untill like all bad guys the plant turned on the pawn. he was just a minipulated pawn in a cruel game. comment if agreed.

Godzilla eat your heart out. 620 cynical bastards like this. Including me, LOL. Anyways, you want to see Seymour both deserve AND get his? Go see the play. For the rest sorry you're stuck with the WTF electricity ending which is, unfortunately, more approprite for the hour and a half that preceded it. BILL MURPHY RULES
Unfortunately, the writer's and Mr. Moranis make Seymour a very sympathetic character. The play had him less sympathetic AND a straight killer who tricks Mushnik into climbing inside the plant. Anyway, despite the chopping scene there are hardly any dark moments in the film and then BAM the characters you grow to love get crunched and the plants take over. Wait, what movie were we watching? Did this just turn into a different movie? WTF? What year is it?
What an awesome ending. Too bad they handled the "Seymour is a murderer and deserves what he gets" angle so badly. Seymour is a good person who DOES NOT murder anyone. He stands by while the guy who beats the woman he loves ODs. Oh yeah he totally should have helped. Would he have shot him? We are led to believe he wouldn't. He has several opportunities to do so. And the greedy Mushnik? The guy tries to blackmail him at gunpoint. Seymour even tries to prevent his death (too late).
Reminds me of Buggs Bunny at the end of "What's Opera, Doc?" having a death scene then doing an aside to the audience: What do you expect in an opera? A happy ending?
OK, it was "Unhappy ending", but it makes this film a dark comedy and this film supposed to be a dark comedy. With original ending, it was just a comedy. I prefer THIS ending, because it has a moral, it is (dark) funny and pretty creative.
This ending is fucking awesome. Goddamn test audiences. Since when did everyone become such wimps that they couldn't take the idea of a bunch of plant monsters taking over the world in a fictional movie?
Seymour was a good person and he did feel guilty for all the killing he did to serve the plant, but he shouldn't get off with a happy ending; he did, after all, KILL people for overall selfish reasons. Dr. Faustus didn't get off with selling his soul, and neither should Seymour. We all like Seymour, but he really didn't earn a happy ending. Come on, test audience, this ending was NOT that bad.

this could one of the greatest films of all time but look back at all the movie releases of movie musicals in the 80s' many expected a somewhat happy resolution to a musical but we could be look at this movie a lot differently today
I like this ending better it should have ended this way both Audrey and semour eaten by the plant if u saw the broadway musical it should have ended that way as the broadway version
Great work! Wish they'd release this. Cmon Geffen, lighten up! Gotta admit, while I prefer the poignancy and emotional impact of this version, I still like the happy ending for it's pacing.
that was something. you know, say what you will but without the happy ending Ashman and Meken wouldn't have been hired by Disney to work on Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin. this would be just like the original movie, lost in some dusty back room. because of the happy ending we can see what might have been and talk about it. with this ending, i don't think it woulda been such a hit and then i wouldn't have my fave movie of all time The Little Mermaid.
Here's the thing. I love the stage play, and the original ending in a theatre context is awesome. Yet I also enjoy the movie, and the decision to give it a happy ending. Because as amazing as the musical is, I do like to know that in at least one medium, these two crazy kids lived happily ever after, which is really all they ever deserved.
i don,t care how they do it but if they could some how get this ending or reshoot this or something it would be awesome i don,t care if it,s in black and white this endings awesome and i love the song at the end oh and by the way HOW THE HELL DID YOU GET THIS was it realesed on DVD i,m not sure
_____I don't find the deleted ending depressing. I find the ending dumber than what comes out of a dog's rear end. About the military combatting plants, does the word FLAME THROWER mean anything to some of you? In the time-period this movie's ending is set in--judging from the military's use of M-1 Garand rifles, the U.S. military was still using flame throwers. And what about tanks? Let's not forget about ARIAL BOMBARDMENT, either. But ultimately, a little bit of weedkiller outta do it.
I know I'm the minority here and maybe it's because I grew up with the final ending so I'm a little biased but even though I can see the intention of this ending with it's "Deal with the devil" moral, it just doesn't sit well with me. Not to mention, the whole thing has a terrible pacing and by the end of it, I was thinking "ALRIGHT! WE GET IT!"
Gotta say though, the plants tearing up Cleveland has to be some of the most epic footage I've ever seen
I never knew there was this ending also. I actually used to be a bit creeped out by this movie when I was little lol. This ending is definitely disturbing but somehow it makes more sense as far as continuity goes.
I can remember seeing little shorts of it in colour. i can also remeber one shot where u see a human hand sticking out the top of one of the miniture buildings releasing some of the debris. but i'm trying to remeber where is saw it. just a two or three second clip though, but definately full colour.
@TheJarredAndEvanShow On Audrey 2's article on the Godzilla wiki (which covers ALL Kaiju-like monsters), they have a color picture from this ending, and it is AWESOME. You should check it out!
I agree that they should have kept this ending, but I find it a little creepy and if memory serves me correctly this was supposed to be a family movie (please don't hesisitate to correct me if I'm wrong) and this ending may have been a bit too creepy for children just my opinion but yes it was a great ending and I love the actual ending as well
I'm not sure if anyone has posted this yet, but I seem to remember something about there not being a color print- it was lost or something.
As for the test audience, F 'em. If they film Les Mis the Musical, maybe no one in the French Revolution will die, and Valjean will go to therapy rather than jail for stealing that bread. Is that less depressing for you?
@MikeNobodyIsBack Again, the color version of this ending was destroyed in a studio fire. I've heard they're releasing a special edition DVD in 2011, possibly conciding with a remake based on the original original 1960 film, so they'll probably recreate it for that. I'm sure if they had the final version of the lost ending they would let us fans have it, but they wouldn't go through the effort of recoloring it just for fans. If they make another DVD, they'll have a reason to recreate it.
RELEASE A DIRECTOR'S CUT IN COLOR. NOW. ARE YOU LISTENING, DAVID GEFFEN!?!?!?! This ending had a moral, the BEST action sequence in the history of cinema, and the surreal display of America's greed coming to eat it alive. That visual of Audrey II on the statue of liberty STILL gives me chills. This WOULD have been the GREATEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME...but that test audience killed it. GREAT.
@molemanninethousand The best action sequence in the history of cinema=Audrey IIs blowing up the city. If you look carefully, you notice the first street they attack is the one from the opening. So when the chorus girls went "shing a ling, what a creepy thing to be happening/YOU BETTER TELLIN YOU YOU BETTER, TELL YO MOMMA SOMETHINGS COME TO GET HER", they're actually WARNING the audience about Audrey IIs attacking. It took me 7 viewings to notice that.
@ExclusiveCheese Look, I like Little Shop of Horrors as much as the next guy, but can you HONESTLY say, in your professional opinion, that this is better than anything in, say, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Die Hard, or any of those awesome action movies?
Judging from your channel icon, you appear to be obsessed with this movie, love this ending, and hate the other one, so I might as well expect this from an obsessed fanboy like you.
@ExclusiveCheese Well, the ending that's currently in the movie makes a little more sense. There's a difference between film and musical theater. In musical theater, the cast comes out for a final bow, but in the movie, they're already dead.
@darthvalor07 Then they should add a fourth wall breaking scene before the credits were Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene, Levi Stubbs, Steve Martin, and Vincent Gardenia come out to take a bow.
@ExclusiveCheese this still isn't perfect. it makes seymore look like a wimp, where in the play, he redeemed himself. the final fight should have ended with him jumping in the air to the plant's mouth with a knife in slow motion. also, he should yell at the sellsman as he realizes it's all his fault and what he must do.(shown in flashbacks of his murders, of course.)
yeah, you can blame the test audience for that, they decided it was "too depressing"... that's what I hate about the whole test audience Idea, having 200 random people who have official say over the movie, it comprimises the art of the people involved... just goes to show how people want a happy ending all the time, and can't handle this kind of thing.
no, a test audience doesn't have the final say. if that were true we'd never have Part of Your World in the Little Mermaid cause one kid dropped his popcorn and caused all the kids to sqirm. in the end, it's up to the director.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Audrey's Death always gets me upset. I really wish this was the ending. Just without the whole attack on NY. It seems really out of place in the movie.
This ending would have been amazing if they would have shortened the whole Audrey II attacking New York thing. That was a bit long but besides that this is the version that belongs in the movie.
But i prefer the released ending. It suits the movie better. The movie is more musical/comedy than horror and this (too long) original Ending would ruin the whole "kitsch-Feeling" of the movie.
OK, I'm totally confused now. I'm almost positive I have seen at least parts of this before, particularly the marketing of Audrey 3s; could I be thinking of the original Corman film?
And on a random note, am I seeing things, or could that be Joe Flaherty at 21:10?
I dont understand what makes people think theres anything wrong with an ending happening tragiclly. This came directly off of broadway, and it almost had the same ending. It ended with the 4 who gotten eaten by the plant on flowers trying to warn others not to feed the plant. This was to only take it one step further which in my opinion would have been better. Whether its a film or musical they dont have to end happy, especially this one, it never really had many happy moments to begin with.
This wasn't as good as the ending in the released movie as it didn't really fit in with the rest of the film. Maybe if they cut down the rampaging at the end and changed the Mr Roboto sounding song to something in the style of the rest of the songs then it may have worked
I like the ending that made the final cut much better. This one is way OTT, and too much like Godzilla. The ending that made the final cut was not really a happy ending - it was a parody of American suburban aspirations and the life they ended up with seemed quite stifling, until the little Audrey II is seen in the garden, promising an exciting future!
Whoa. I've always been told that the original movie ending had the stage ending and it doesn't.
In this version, Seymour is captured and eaten by the plant. On stage he makes a suicide attack and voluntarily goes into the plant saying, You may be tough on the outside, but in there, in that pod, Ill hack you to bits." I think that makes a huge difference in how his death is perceived. In the film, hes a total loser. On stage, hes noble & has redeemed his honor, even though he still fails.
I think this is a very important point made by MaryRobinette. ! I wonder if things would have been seen differently by the test audience had this small detail not been tampered with?
you babys in the test audience! you ruiend a great ending! but noooo you have to have your happily ever after ending.. pshh its so cheesy but this is great
This is unbelievable. While this isn't the happy ending that most would expect, I feel it is a far superior and more appropriate ending than the slapdash one that made the final cut. They spent five million dollars on this ending that was intended by the creators and because of a few negative test audiences they scrapped it. It's a shame, really. And since the original color print was destroyed in a fire, I guess we'll never see this wonderful film complete the way it was intended to be seen.
Oh, it does, according to David Geffen. He claims to have the only color print in the world. He also says he's very disappointed with the ending released in theaters, wanting to re-edit the original and re-release it with this ending in theaters.
Yeah, this is the workprint. On the director's commentary Frank Oz talks about how the original ending did so terribly in the test screenings that they raced to re-do it. It's actually a really interesting point: he says that, in a stage play, you know that the characters are all going to come out for the curtain call, so you can deal with an unhappy ending. But, in a movie, people get so invested in the reality of the characters it was too upsettting.
Does anybody know if they will be remaking this movie. Its too old and a new movie would do GREAT in the theaters, I honestly believe that. I think'll it'll give The Dark Knight a run for its money......just a thought. lol
There's nothing that could be improved upon. This movie was perfect. Plus, I don't think it would have any real box office draw, especially when this is the version everyone's familiar with.
I've been thinking a good compromise would of been after the credits, have a big title card saying "BUT SUPPOSE THE PLANTS *DID* CONQUER THE WORLD?" (with perhaps a "Batman"-style narrator saying it, as well) and segue directly into the "Don't Feed the Plants" number (minus the trio's intro). Nobody dies (except Muschnik and Orin), people who stay for the credits are rewarded, and we get to see some plants take over the world! Whoo-Hoo!
Very dark ending, but I liked it. I love horror, they should have kept this ending instead of just tacking on a happy ending to appease people who couldn't handle it. Not all stories are meant to have happy endings. I am not really familiar with the broadway production of the play, but if this is how it ended there, it should have been the same in the movie.
When I saw the stage musical... IT BLEW ME AWAY becuase I wasn't expecting the real ending becuase all I ever saw was the movie... but that IS how the play ends... Wow, I guess they wanted to give this one a happier ending?
Having gotten the chance to see the "original" ending, I have to say I prefer the other version. This one is too long, and downbeat for my taste. That being said, it was well shot and quite impressive. Hopefully if the movie gets re-released on DVD, this version is also included (for those who enjoyed it) and restored to it's full glory. It makes a strong counterpoint to the "happily ever after" scenerio that filmgoers ultimately saw....
I love this ending! I even found my self cherring on saying" Yes audrey DIE!!!" witch was very wierd when I heard myself then I stoped at once but when I saw this part of the ending again I keeped on saying it! I think it's because I like Audrey 2 better then Audrey 1.
Its very interesting seeing this. Perhaps they could have used some of the last scenes more in the film. Perhaps as 'thought flashes' when they talk about the plants taking over. But the happy ending does suit the film style of the beginning of the movie.
Apparently the test audience hated it. It's more of a love story and comedy then a horror film I guess.
Actually, it works GREAT in black and white - if they ever do a restoration of this with the original ending, they should also put out the entire movie in b/w.
It's a crime that it hasn't been restored yet - if the ending had been left alone, Frank Oz would've had a much different film career.
Test Audiences are so stupid this would have put a moral on the story and have the brilliant ending of the show. Now between the real ending and Mushnik and Son the show unfortunatly outshines the movie by far.
Hercules (Heracles in Greek) beat his family to death, completed 12 labors and is remembered as a hero in myth.
Anakin Skywalker turns to the dark side, brings about an evil empire...and yet redeems himself by saving Luke and destroying the Emperor...given Jedi's funeral
Spawn...Ghost Rider...American fiction is filled with people making deals with the devil who then turn against him and redeem themselves.
I'm sorry, but if you prefer a sappy and sentimentalized happy ending over a dark and macabre sad ending even after taking into account everything Seymour has done throughout the entire show, you need you have your head examined!
yeah..okay...me and all the people that Frank Oz screened this ending to that were pissed off.
I hated to ending to Cloverfield too. pardon me for liking the characters and wanting them to have a good ending.
What wrong had Audrey done? did she deserved to die? In the Happy Ending does Seymore not redeem himself? Don't you think there is such a thing as redemption?
You are as bad as the plant thinking some people deserve to die. examine your own head.
I'm just saying for the whole metaphor of dealing with the devil to work more effectively, and also to stay faithful to the original play, the bad ending is much more effective.
Besides, by the end of the play, (during "The Meek Shall Inherit" song) Seymour rmorally debates with himself whether or not to keep the plant and all the glory (in other words, keep on killing) or just kill the plant and redeem himself.
Well, guess what? He ended up choosing the former, therefore his fate was sealed
Audrey's death was to show Seymour that when the devil comes to collect after you make deals with him, and he won't even spare the people you love. Think about it a little more before you start accusing ME of thinking like the plant and saying they deserved to die!
no matter what you've done...there is redemption. Heck, even the infamous "Son of Sam" killer has come to Christ and turned his life around.
and...in the song you mentioned...Seymores dilemma about keeping the plant around is simply because he is afraid that Audrey won't love him without his success. Love is the motive..not a motive of evil will to kill. yet you suggest no mercy...die Seymore...DIE!!
I'm familar with these stories, and I like them, but in terms of those stories, it was necessary for them to to end happily. In terms of this one, I think think it was a nice change of pace to have the bad guys win. I'm not gonna argue about this any more, so don't even continue. I'm tired of it.

that was something. you know, say what you will but without the happy ending Ashman and Meken wouldn't have been hired by Disney to work on Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin. this would be just like the original movie, lost in some dusty back room. because of the happy ending we can see what might have been and talk about it. with this ending, i don't think it woulda been such a hit and then i wouldn't have my fave movie of all time The Little Mermaid.

GREAT.
ExclusiveCheese 2 years ago 47
@ExclusiveCheese Um...best action sequence in the history of cinema?
molemanninethousand 1 year ago
@molemanninethousand The best action sequence in the history of cinema=Audrey IIs blowing up the city. If you look carefully, you notice the first street they attack is the one from the opening. So when the chorus girls went "shing a ling, what a creepy thing to be happening/YOU BETTER TELLIN YOU YOU BETTER, TELL YO MOMMA SOMETHINGS COME TO GET HER", they're actually WARNING the audience about Audrey IIs attacking. It took me 7 viewings to notice that.

@ExclusiveCheese Well, the ending that's currently in the movie makes a little more sense. There's a difference between film and musical theater. In musical theater, the cast comes out for a final bow, but in the movie, they're already dead.
darthvalor07 1 year ago
@darthvalor07 Then they should add a fourth wall breaking scene before the credits were Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene, Levi Stubbs, Steve Martin, and Vincent Gardenia come out to take a bow.
ExclusiveCheese 1 year ago
@ExclusiveCheese this still isn't perfect. it makes seymore look like a wimp, where in the play, he redeemed himself. the final fight should have ended with him jumping in the air to the plant's mouth with a knife in slow motion. also, he should yell at the sellsman as he realizes it's all his fault and what he must do.(shown in flashbacks of his murders, of course.)

yeah, you can blame the test audience for that, they decided it was "too depressing"... that's what I hate about the whole test audience Idea, having 200 random people who have official say over the movie, it comprimises the art of the people involved... just goes to show how people want a happy ending all the time, and can't handle this kind of thing.
daviddowns81 2 years ago 27
@daviddowns81
no, a test audience doesn't have the final say. if that were true we'd never have Part of Your World in the Little Mermaid cause one kid dropped his popcorn and caused all the kids to sqirm. in the end, it's up to the director.
GoddessOfWhim2003 1 year ago
@daviddowns81 Well, the goal of these movies is to make money. if audiences hate the film too much, then the film doesn't make money.

Henric22 3 years ago 4
This wasn't as good as the ending in the released movie as it didn't really fit in with the rest of the film. Maybe if they cut down the rampaging at the end and changed the Mr Roboto sounding song to something in the style of the rest of the songs then it may have worked
Alexhaladay 3 years ago
I like the ending that made the final cut much better. This one is way OTT, and too much like Godzilla. The ending that made the final cut was not really a happy ending - it was a parody of American suburban aspirations and the life they ended up with seemed quite stifling, until the little Audrey II is seen in the garden, promising an exciting future!
aussiegirlincambridg 3 years ago
Holy Lizzard Lips!!!
CameoCollections 3 years ago

Extremexlr8X 3 years ago
This is unbelievable. While this isn't the happy ending that most would expect, I feel it is a far superior and more appropriate ending than the slapdash one that made the final cut. They spent five million dollars on this ending that was intended by the creators and because of a few negative test audiences they scrapped it. It's a shame, really. And since the original color print was destroyed in a fire, I guess we'll never see this wonderful film complete the way it was intended to be seen.

wiiplaya69 3 years ago
Yeah, this is the workprint. On the director's commentary Frank Oz talks about how the original ending did so terribly in the test screenings that they raced to re-do it. It's actually a really interesting point: he says that, in a stage play, you know that the characters are all going to come out for the curtain call, so you can deal with an unhappy ending. But, in a movie, people get so invested in the reality of the characters it was too upsettting.

It makes a strong counterpoint to the "happily ever after" scenerio that filmgoers ultimately saw....

aquanette123 3 years ago

RobertHubbard 3 years ago
Test Audiences are so stupid this would have put a moral on the story and have the brilliant ending of the show. Now between the real ending and Mushnik and Son the show unfortunatly outshines the movie by far.

Three Things:
One: This should've been the ending
Two: Can Seymour at least died fighting Audrey II (w/ machete)
Three: A little Snip here and Trim there (editing wise) and this would have totally overrun cities. Pun intended.

gluband 3 years ago
I'm sorry, but if you prefer a sappy and sentimentalized happy ending over a dark and macabre sad ending even after taking into account everything Seymour has done throughout the entire show, you need you have your head examined!
GoldenTalesGeek 3 years ago
yeah..okay...me and all the people that Frank Oz screened this ending to that were pissed off.
I hated to ending to Cloverfield too. pardon me for liking the characters and wanting them to have a good ending.
What wrong had Audrey done? did she deserved to die? In the Happy Ending does Seymore not redeem himself? Don't you think there is such a thing as redemption?
You are as bad as the plant thinking some people deserve to die. examine your own head.
gluband 3 years ago 3
I'm just saying for the whole metaphor of dealing with the devil to work more effectively, and also to stay faithful to the original play, the bad ending is much more effective.
Besides, by the end of the play, (during "The Meek Shall Inherit" song) Seymour rmorally debates with himself whether or not to keep the plant and all the glory (in other words, keep on killing) or just kill the plant and redeem himself.
Well, guess what? He ended up choosing the former, therefore his fate was sealed
GoldenTalesGeek 3 years ago
Audrey's death was to show Seymour that when the devil comes to collect after you make deals with him, and he won't even spare the people you love. Think about it a little more before you start accusing ME of thinking like the plant and saying they deserved to die!
GoldenTalesGeek 3 years ago
no matter what you've done...there is redemption. Heck, even the infamous "Son of Sam" killer has come to Christ and turned his life around.
and...in the song you mentioned...Seymores dilemma about keeping the plant around is simply because he is afraid that Audrey won't love him without his success. Love is the motive..not a motive of evil will to kill. yet you suggest no mercy...die Seymore...DIE!!
you seem to have a depressing view of the world.
