@SoloSweden the body is exactly the same as the actual SG Standard, was in a lokal music store, checked out the AY signature, and asked the tech. even the neck joint is the same, same cutaways, NOT the big headstock wich a 70s sg has. Just go and get some Pics of a Vintage SG, the AY V.O.S. is a copy. The signature is just a modifyed SG, sry mate. But I love its Tailpeace.
i dont know, i think the SG AY Signature is a ripp off... ive got a sg standard and i bought some UFO Knobs for 5$... the headstock of the AY is ugly, there should be a crown on it. The Vibrato is awesome thats true but this is the only difference to a sg standard, im not talking about pickups here.
That depends. Brand new in Sweden you'll have to pay about 2500 euros. It's cheaper in the U.S. You might buy second hand - if you reckon the guitar is in the condition you want it to be: could be much cheaper.
It's worth the expence, regardless (brand new, OR second hand: if it's not broken lol)
I hope you get it. I'm not sure Gibson will keep making this guitar for much longer now that they (Gibson USA, NOT Custom, although Custom have a new Angus out as well) have a new Angus Signature model out.
Let me know if you get it, and how you like it. I love mine. As much as I love the new Angus VOS (38 out of 200ex that we received a few weeks ago), if not more!
While people say they have issues with tuning, I don't. SG's are not optimal guitars when it comes to keep the tuning, but I also have SG's without the vibrola, and I need to tune them as often as the AYS.
Another thing that differs between the AYS and the Standard, is the neck thickness. The new Standards have a thicker one, while the AYS has a very thin neck, just like the 60's SG's.
i guess that settles it, i've never had an SG so i don't have any idea if they stay in tune well.. i'm going to try both.. i like the necks chunky tho.. but i don't like the redness of the new ones, darker red of AYS looks nicer i think.. mabe i'll also try a reissue.. nothing beats trying and hearing for yourself.. thanks for the info.. keep on rocking!
Thats what I think although the way he talked about it in an article I have read from 1981 which is after you first see the light bolt guitar. It sounds like it is still orignal so maybe not it.
I've read an interview with his luthiere. And the "BOLT" guitat he plays IS his original. The new neck with the inlays was put on after the original broke.
I knew they were making melody makers in the SG shape around that time (At one point I owned two different models a '61 and a '64 D), but I wasn't sure about standards so i looked up Gibson and wiki...his was a '68 but he bought it in 1970
He has had man SG's. His first was a 70 to a 71 SG Standard, aand he also has a 64 which is the black one plays live. He had that one refinished in 89, and is one of his favorite guitars.

Can someone tell me how often you have to tune this guitar i was planning on buying it but the guy at Guitar Center said it goes out of tune every two songs you play
While I don't have any issues with tuning (more than usual with other SG:s without the vibrola), people say they do. BUT I can only talk out of my experience, which in this case only extends to my own guitar.
Though, personally, I wouldn't listen to the "guy" at Guitar Center. Many people seem to think SG:s alway goes out of tune. THEY DON'T!!!
hey dude can u please read the comment i posted above and reply?? im trying to upgrade my guitar and one of the things i also wanna upgrade...is that i wanna get a vibrola like the one u have..do u know how much does it cost?? and would i have to drill any holes in my guitar to put the vibrola?? thanks man and nice guitar =)
Lovely guitar you got there! I've got a Gibson SG Standard myself and I'm thinking about adding a tremolo tailpice, and had a quiq question: Do you have any problem whit it not staying in tune using the whammy bar?
I don't have any issues with tuning (more than usual with other SG:s without the vibrola) people say they do.
But using the vibrola as it was supposed to be used will make it go out of tune, though. I can only be used for VERY subtle tremolo.
As a great friend of minetold me (Fil, aka SoloDallas) the vibrola will make the guitar sound different, in a way which is better if you want to play AC/DC (I don't have the gear to make that comparison right now myself).
I would like to buy a Gibson SG standard, but by the moment I can't afford it... I'm too young to have that money!! By the way, I have my Epiphone SG and I'm really happy.
If you are buying a guitar to play AC/DC, or mainly AC/DC, I'd say go for the AYS hands down. I had a Standard myself, but I sold it and got the AYS instead.
It really gets closer to the Angus Young tone, with almost any amp. I like better how it feels, too, since it's got a thinner neck.
No doubts the AYS pickup has an impact on the sound. Quite a big impact, too. It's your choice mate but I really recomend you to buy the AYS instead of the Standard (wich is still a great guitar).

The AY body construction differs as well. The AY was derived from Angus' first 1970/71 SG: much thinner neck!
Thanks for telling your opinion!

Well, the neck of the AY Signature has a thinner neck than the SG Standard...

but i have an idea. His early guitars had this maestro thing. He never used it, but he had it on his SGs. Thats the only idea i have :/
adam10603 2 years ago
This is the reason. To be precise: Angus' first Gibson SG (1968) had the same vibrato system as the AY Signature has.
It was simply designed after the 1968 Standard, since that first SG of Angus Young was a 1968 with vibrato.
SoloSweden 2 years ago
The angus signature SG is great, its the best among the SGs, but i dont understand one thing. Angus has never ever used a vibrato. He does the vibrato by bending the strings with his left hand. So i dont know, why is there a vibrato on the signature SG.
