I watch this finish and still laugh my ass off. I'm a Jr. fan (along with being a fan of a great many other drivers) but no one I root for to be #1. I appreciate all the drivers' skills, heart and 'drive'. What I find funny was trying my best to drag my wife and two friends out of the middle of turn 4 stands when I saw the literal 'tsunami' of crap sailing over the fence. Why in such a hurry to get the hell outta Dodge??? The wave of Alabama State Troopers that stormed the stands! SEEYA!!!
after this race i was in a new dimension of pissed off. not just the fact gordon won but the fact they ran 5 laps under yellow for a spin that left no debris in a race where at the time u couldnt help but feel like jr got robbed of a chance because this wasnt long after they quit racing back to the line. this is main reason for GWC
This was before GWC finishes. This is probably the reason for GWC, too. I was right there where all the beer throwing got started. I didn't throw any, but couldn't help but laugh at the Jr. fans.

@SLJR16 well when the pace car got the field, there was 4 to go..they need to make 1 lap under caution for lead lap cars to pit, and one more for the lap down cars to pit..giving them 2 to go..nascar doesnt do green whites so that was the race..

Where or when is the question, but it's got to the point where the chance of death or injury is so low, you rarely here about someone dying or getting hurt. Yes, Dale's death was instant, but all of the safety equipment has saved drivers nowadays. Still, some of the things about NASCAR I question, like why they don't give a special award for the points leader after the first 26 races if they want a chase.

The thing that was controversial to me was the fact that the race ended under caution when the caution came out with 5 to go. That was kind of stupid to me and I am a diehard Jr. fan but that was really classless what the fans did to Gordon.

Its funny how they ended the race under caution, but in the 1997 Pepsi 400, they had a big crash occur with four laps to go and they restarted with one lap to go. The least they could have done was restart the race with two laps to go so the fans could not throw a fit and get their money's worth.

They changed the rules. Starting at the fall Dover race in 2003, racing back to the flag became prohibited. Personally, I think racing back to the flag was the better system (no need to go to cameras or scoring loops to check positions; they needed to watch only one spot: the start/finish line).

The only reason it was controversial was the fact that at the time there were 3,000 jr fans for 1 fan of any other driver. Jeff was clearly at least a half a car length ahead of jr at the moment of caution and they were past the red flag lap. It cannot be any more black and white of who is the winner here.

i was at this race, i have never seen that many beer cans, and in 2004 i was 10, and i laughed my ass off when he was getting beer bombed, but at the same time i was pissed at the finish

Its funny how they ended the race under caution, but in the 1997 Pepsi 400, they had a big crash occur with four laps to go and they restarted with one lap to go. The least they could have done was restart the race with two laps to go so the fans could not throw a fit and get their money's worth.

i was there. it was insane. a full can of bud light just missed my head. fuckin crazy man. i got hit with something and i saw who did it, and i beamed a half empty can of beer from someone next to me at him, not his head (the guy next to me was drunker than you would ever believe) anyway i saw Smoke, Harvick, Kahne, and alot of other non-junior fans throwing stuff too

They changed the rules. Starting at the fall Dover race in 2003, racing back to the flag became prohibited. Personally, I think racing back to the flag was the better system (no need to go to cameras or scoring loops to check positions; they needed to watch only one spot: the start/finish line).

@mailmeonline before the green white checker finish, if the caution came out too late, the race would end under caution. But I think with 5 laps to go, they would throw the red flag to try and finish it under green.
