Genius man, can't believe how smart he is. They all think hes deaf and dumb and a stupid native american... Little did Miss Ratched (ratshed as mcmurphy says) know that she was being trolled by literally the master of all trolls.
Do you think Chief started talking in this scene because he thought he was going to get lobotomized like his father was and figured there was no point in keeping quiet anymore?
@kaycie92 no. but it is on netflix. if you haven't seen the movie, it is actually really different from the book (cheswick lives and taber is still committed), but it still has the major themes. i'm reading the book now
idk why but i find this scene cute haha. and does anyone know if Chief MEANT to say thank you or not? or was that just accidental and he juts gave up hiding it.
@TheBlueAnchovy In the book McMurphy doesn't believe the Chief is actually "deaf and dumb" and is not surprised when he finally starts talking. He knows for sure that the chief can hear when he responds to things, and just sort of waits for him to feel comfortable enough to speak. Then tells him how his voice sounds pretty rusty, but he's there to listen if the Chief wants to practice.
I just watched this for the first time and my classmate said the native american actor was her mom's cousin. that's cool. Anyway, I loved this part of the movie. That's what psychologist/psychiatrist get when pre judging a person because they don't want to speak to them..LOL! good movie.and sad too..;)
@tommyt1971 Reminds me of that perfect look Eddie Murphy had on his face in Trading Places where Ralph Bellamy says "...like ya might find in a bacon, lettuce & tomato sandwich."
@CommanderShepard2000 The reasons for his being there are vague. It might be that he had a breakdown after seeing his father utterly humiliated, or he might be tormented by his service days in WWII; it may be both. What we do know is that since his admittance, he had received MANY electroshock treatments (possibly as many as 200) which have caused him to have fits of hallucinations.
@dogzluvr13 i have always thought will sampson had a very handsome soul as well, his personality in the movie poltergiest 2 was what made that more than just his outward appearance
I dig the whole film but this scene might be my favorite because its was actually a pleasent surprise to discover that Chief wasn't as screwed up as everyone thought. ....Jack sitting there blown away by the revelation while Chief sits' there chewing the gum grinnin'......lol. Classic moment.
Notice how right before Chief says, "Ahh, juicyfruit", Nicholson begins to look down. Then his head jerks back up when Chief starts to speak. I imagine that was just an accidental thing, but it's awesome how well Nicholson was embodying his character. That's an extremely realistic reaction. Incredible movie
It astounds me that this guy wasn't an actor at all, he was a park ranger in Oregon in a park near where the movie was filmed. He was selected for the part because he was the only Native American the Casting Department could find who matched the character's incredible size.
I love this scene. You can see how excited McMurphy is that someone else is sticking it to Nurse Ratched and her cunty form of passive-aggressive sadism.
I did give it a thumbs up, seems a little silly. Men used to play women in Shakespearean times. Thats the point of acting, you're pretting to be someone else.
everyone apparently loved it.. i, along with the actor/actress that played mcmurphy and nurse ratchett got a letter from our headmaster congratulating us on our performance, and at the end of the year the actor who played mcmurphy and i got an award for it :P how i got it playing a catatonic narrator that does little else than sweep and stand there is beyond me, but hey, im not complaining ;)
@MasterClipEditor yeye and also in book Mac is bigger ( i imagine) and has a red hair , and where are pants with whales?:D MOVIE is great but BOOK>MOVIE
@MasterClipEditor "nowhere near as good as the book" do you understand how overused that statement is? a book ='s your own imagination. you create a very specific appeal and look to how you expect things to go down in a movie, and then when you see the movie and it doesn't equal to exactly how you wanted, you claim the book is better. why does noone EVER understand this concept
@geddoe316 second guessing: to criticize or question actions or decisions of (someone) often after the results of those actions or decisions are known
@MasterClipEditor i actually think opposite, its because i read the book after i watched the movie. i understand its the non traditional order but the way the movie keeps you out of the loop with the chief and then it lets you know here, along with mcmurphy is much more interesting than knowing since the beginning that he wasnt actually deaf and dumb. im not dissing the book i think its significance at the time is second to none but for actual entertainment purposes- movie for sure
This is my favorite scene, it's just so awesome, just because it's so subtle, he never talks the whole movie, and just out of nowhere "mmm, juicy fruit" lol.
HAHhaha in the beginning he wasent sure if he heard something out of his mouth so he gave him one more gum to be sure.. LOL

@KnightGrl95 nice theory... save that electroconvulsive therapy does not cause hallucinations, and nowhere in the book does it say he had as much
0428733 7 months ago
@CommanderShepard2000 In the book, he suffers of actual paranoia and a lot of nasty complexes, in the movie, it is never explained.

geddoe316 11 months ago
@geddoe316
I agree that that statement can be overused. However the choices made in the movie take away from the power of the story
Taber should be a vegetable, it helps explain why Chief smothers Mac at the End
Cheswick's suicide is one of the main reasons that Mac goes into his depression
Mac breaks the window for kicks instead of for Cheswick, the moment that Mac comes back out of his depression
I could continue. The story Kesey wrote is much more powerful than the movie
